Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Ed has had a very lucky and timely escape from a horrible, life-sapping millstone around his neck for the rest of his life.

And, as a bonus, won't be saddled with a mortgage either.

Silvercatowner · 03/08/2019 21:37

Not sure whether this has been asked before, but did Ed inform the mortgage people about the loss of his job on purpose (either consciously or unconsciously, if that makes sense) to put a stop to the move?? It was certainly an out of character thing for him to do.

MikeUniformMike · 03/08/2019 21:52

Chris and Alice don't pay rent. Chris is self-employed and works hard, Alice is probably on a good salary. They don't appear to live a flash lifestyle. (Note to self:I was on page 20 when I posted this)

Where's the pic of the Dower House please?

R4 · 03/08/2019 21:52

It makes perfect sense, although I don't think that he has thought through "what comes next?". He, Em and the DC will soon be homeless and have lost an awful lot of goodwill.

R4 · 03/08/2019 22:09

Where's the pic of the Dower House please?
Was it this one?

CodenameVillanelle · 03/08/2019 22:25

Ugh this whole storyline is stressing me out
It's giving me flashbacks to being in a relationship with a man who always screwed things up especially financially. Emma has been awful but her panic and distress is too real.

InkySplatter · 03/08/2019 22:27

How did Tracey get in her stable position in a sneaky way Littlebluetin? I have always adored her character but admittedly have only been listening for a few years. I think clumsy wooing of Roy and chucking him for being dull was my first introduction to her.

I have defended Emma, who has been beyond nasty, and, who I didn't like anyway but it seemed like she was having a full breakdown. The storming round the village, the impatience and the frantic way she hurried people along and then dismissed them as soon as they offered no large cash value, the change in thinking. All she could see is money. I don't think she would have humiliated herself, and repeatedly if she wasn't falling apart at the seams (to put it mildly.) I also think the timing of Ed ending their relationship is particularly off. Emma needs picking up now. PP mentioned she was venting a woman talking to a woman would see that but Ed has taken it personally. I agree totally with this. I just can't bear the further kicking she's getting, and I really can't bear the children losing their own bedrooms and their parents marriage 13 minutes air time.

Ed didn't really want a new job though did he? He hardly had a fire lit under him. He decided it was futile and gave up, probably relieved to be free of commitment to the mortgage.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/08/2019 22:51

Emma was living rent-free in somebody's house. The owner came round to see how things were going. And how did Emma describe her to a friend?

Lady Muck.

I find it hard to think of Emma as anything other than a rather nasty person.

MollyButton · 03/08/2019 22:53

Tracey has a job - she was on her way to work the other day. As well as her Father she is looking after one of her brothers who sounds as though he is either ASD or has learning difficulties.

Lexilooo · 04/08/2019 00:06

I don't think Tracey got her name on the tenancy in a sneaky way. She agreed to move in and care for Bert and Gary on condition that her name went on the tenancy. Susan was angling for this because she didn't want to be saddled with their father and brother. Entirely sensible decision by Tracey.

If in future she falls foul of the bedroom tax she can swap her council house for a smaller one.she has a secure home, that she is in charge of and her own income.

Her finances are tight which is why her gift of £300 was so touching but she's her own woman and Emma could do worse.

InkySplatter · 04/08/2019 00:13

I totally agree asking I've never liked her. It's hard to see passed the chip on her shoulder, though I understand why it's there. II think she is rather vile but this week she was positively unhinged. I find I can overlook that more easily than her previous poor behaviour because I think she was suffering from (hopefully) temporary insanity.

InkySplatter · 04/08/2019 00:14

And thanks, that's how I thought Tracey's situation sounded but always interested to hear more historic info.

QuaterMiss · 04/08/2019 01:13

But what will Emma do?

Even if the chicken factory boss lets her back after refusing her a week’s work - it seems unlikely that she’ll go back to the Bridge Farm tearoom, and equally unlikely that she’ll be working for Peggy again any time soon.

InkySplatter · 04/08/2019 01:25

And where will she live now sheaned are meaned no more?

birdsdestiny · 04/08/2019 05:26

If the SW have even the slightest bit of sense they will rescue her somehow and find a way for her to strike out on her own.
Susan and Neil will not see her homeless.
I have a horrible feeling she will end up with Will though.

QuaterMiss · 04/08/2019 06:53

Perhaps Joe (off-stage) could bring them back together. I’m not ready to believe they’ll split up permanently. That would be Just Too Much.

Littlebluetinofdorcaspins · 04/08/2019 07:01

Lexicon, I’m trying to remember the exact details of how Tracy got her name on the tenancy - I think she pulled the wool over Bert’s eyes, and Gary doesn’t know. Remember thinking at the time that it would cause a stink when Bert died and Tracy ask found to be on the tenancy.

Littlebluetinofdorcaspins · 04/08/2019 07:01

WAS found

Littlebluetinofdorcaspins · 04/08/2019 07:02

Lexiloo. I give up.

LassOfFyvie · 04/08/2019 07:58

Susan and Neil will not see her homeless.

Will wouldn't either because of George. Sharing a house with Will doesn't mean she is with him.

MollyButton · 04/08/2019 08:06

I like Tracy! Yes she moved "home" and got Burt to put her on the Tenancy. But that provides security for her and her kids. And as a result she looks after the house, and Burt and Gary. It means Susan doesn't have the burden of looking after Burt and will protect him from exploitation from their criminal brothers (can you imagine if Burt's faculties began to fail, he'd be easy prey for the unscrupulous).
Tracy has consistently put family first, her kids, her Dad and brother, and nieces and nephews. But she can also be kind to others - such as Mia. And her giving £342 to Emma was the ultimate in self sacrifice - who else in Ambridge would give their last few pounds and get their kids to empty their piggy banks for anyone?

I think Tracy is a good picture of a Working Class woman, who is unashamed of her origin, and a massive contrast to all the other MC or social climbing characters.

Abraid2 · 04/08/2019 08:20

Tracy does light up the radio when she’s on.

Abraid2 · 04/08/2019 08:22

In terms of general attitude to life. I’d like to see her take on Kate.

birdsdestiny · 04/08/2019 08:45

Yes but I think if she moves in with Will it will inevitably lead to a storyline about them becoming closer. Or alternatively Ed thinks they are getting closer, becomes insanely jealous and tries to win her back.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 04/08/2019 09:02

I have noticed Emma and Will getting on better recently, I wonder if that was signposting
