Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Oh, Emma's burning bridges. How much was she expecting her dad to get? £15K is a good amount, but she was so nasty to him, and ungrateful, because she wanted more. And loan sharks?

Motoko · 01/08/2019 19:20

Yes, they're completing tomorrow, not exchanging contracts. That's why Justin couldn't budge on the date.

LassOfFyvie · 01/08/2019 19:27

Ok, I'm getting really frustrated here! Exchanging contracts is not affected by Ed losing his job. They just keep quiet and carry on. Ok, it's fraud but by this stage in proceedings who gives a toss. Or have I missed something?

No. None of us understand this. They now have access to £18,000 from Will and Neil which they can use to pay the monthly payments. That could be anything from 18 to 36 months where the payments are covered..

If I were Neil and Will I wouldn't be handing the money over in a oner- I'd only pay it as each month became due.

HorseradishSnowflake · 01/08/2019 19:27

Completing, sorry I thought it was exchange. But still from what I remember nobody's actually checks your circumstances haven't changed, so they could choose to not mention it? And just make sure they don't default on any payments. As family are lending close the 20 grand that's surely several months payments.

HorseradishSnowflake · 01/08/2019 19:28

Sorry @LassOfFyvie. Cross post. Yes exactly.

MadameButterface · 01/08/2019 19:29

Yeah meredint she said something like ‘many people try to take advantage of my good nature’ or something

WhatEVER Peggy

This storyline is annoying me so much, i’m sat here genuinely worried about me n ed 😭 i hate zero hours contracts, i hate working class people being priced out of living where they grew up, i hate the way the archers treats the lower orders either as bumbling oafs or cautionary morality tales while the enclave dickheads tend to sail through life completely unaffected by their stupidity and fecklessness, i hate how ed n em are grafters who can’t get a break, i hate normal intelligent characters having personality transplants (eg not asking this wild eyed desperate woman selling everything she owns/begging what exactly is the matter), i hate all of it, it can all get in the bin

Fink · 01/08/2019 19:31

Thank goodness it was only a loan shark, I thought it might have been a pimp (although, in hindsight, I doubt they pay prostitutes tens of thousands of pounds upfront).

HorseradishSnowflake · 01/08/2019 19:32

@MadameButterface. I'm with you.
Come the revolution.....

QuaterMiss · 01/08/2019 19:32

BOOP for MadameButterface!

StarStarStar

Fink · 01/08/2019 19:39

Oh! Fallon and Lynda so nearly talked to one another and realised something was up with Emma! If only Ben hadn't come in.

PennyJanuary · 01/08/2019 19:58

MadameButterface agreed! 👏👏👏

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2019 20:03

Yes MadameButterface Right on!

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2019 20:04

If Emma goes to a loan shark I really don't think I'll be able to listen any more.

MrsGrindah · 01/08/2019 20:14

This is causing me so much conflict! It’s hard to listen to cos the actress playing Emma is fantastic and there have been some powerful lines. But it’s spoilt by the inaccuracies over how mortgages and house purchases work , people doing things out of character etc. I do think the scene where Ed andEmma turned on each other was v realistic, as was the scene where Neil had to force Emma to take Keira home because she’d lost all perspective

TheSilveryPussycat · 01/08/2019 20:43

Odd, isn't it. There must be some people in the production team who have a mortgage on their home.

ppeatfruit · 01/08/2019 21:03

Yes The Silvery and also have to pay leccy bills etc etc. if poor Ed n Em are on such a financial knife edge, even when ,if. they get into the house every effing bill is going to be a trauma.

LassOfFyvie · 01/08/2019 21:04

But it’s spoilt by the inaccuracies over how mortgages and house purchases work

On Radio 4. The average listener could bore for Britain on this topic.

ppeatfruit · 01/08/2019 21:05

It's very different when you aren't sharing the bills with your parents and Joe.

MrsGrindah · 01/08/2019 21:06

True Lass. Won’t somebody contact Martin Lewis?!

LassOfFyvie · 01/08/2019 21:09

I'm losing all patience with this storyline. Emma was horrible to Neil.

BertrandRussell · 01/08/2019 21:09

So what is the actual position? They’ve got their mortgage and handed over the deposit. So surely all they have to do now is meet the payments? And with 20 grand they can do that comfortably until Ed gets another job. Is that right? So why the flap?

DadDadDad · 01/08/2019 21:13

I'm sure Emma said they were exchanging tomorrow (Friday) and moving next week.

MrsGrindah · 01/08/2019 21:16

Exactly Bertrand. And it isn’t even being explained by Emma. So she’s not telling people what she wants the money for, so nobody can put her right. Except Neil who has just bizarrely gone and got a loan without explaining they don’t really need it by Friday. And without telling Susan.

Limer · 01/08/2019 21:18

I can believe Emma going into full panic mode and acting like she is. Maybe not to the extent of applying for an assistant receptionist's job on Ed's behalf though - surely the money wouldn't be anywhere near enough, she berated Ed minutes later for his agency carer application, saying it wouldn't pay enough. Is this a signal that she's heading for a breakdown? I'm going to have to listen to tomorrow's episode live! Can't help thinking Joe will keel over in the midst of all the drama.

But I can't believe Neil unquestioningly applying for a bank loan without gently explaining to Emma that the mortgage lender will only care that the payments are made.

And yes, surely the scriptwriters know that every Archers listener also listens to MoneyBox, so knows all about mortgages, even if they don't have one.

I loved Tracy's scenes though, she's soooooo typically Horrobin!

LassOfFyvie · 01/08/2019 21:22

Yes Ed, Emma has lost the plot.
