Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

I really hope we don’t have yet another prison storyline

The unpleasant thought I had listening to this on the train home just now was they might be doing another suicide/attempted suicide story.

SarfE4sticated · 31/07/2019 20:56

I know Emma is annoying, but I do feel for her.

It's pretty crap to feel you're never going to be able to get a place of your own.

I always get too invested in these people, have to keep remembering that "they are not real".

Fink · 31/07/2019 20:57

Does anyone know the name of the actor who plays Jacob the vet?

I don't know, but I suggest you don't Google it to try to find out. That's what I just did and I got a spoiler instead (didn't even click the link, it was in the headline). Angry The BBC page looks like it hasn't been updated in ages so Jakob's not on there but various other characters who have now left are.

PennyJanuary · 31/07/2019 20:59

Ha ha Fink I've already googled it but can't find the answer weirdly! (Didn't spot any spoilers though).

MrsGrindah · 31/07/2019 21:03

Oh my God even I’m starting to feel sorry for Emma now.

PennyJanuary · 31/07/2019 21:04

Oh my God even I’m starting to feel sorry for Emma now.
I totally am. I find the anguish and tiredness in her voice almost too painful to listen to.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 31/07/2019 21:29

Couldn't Emmur approach Lilian with the suggestion of some sort of shared ownership arrangement?

Maybe Amside could own 50% of the property, and Ed & Emma have a vastly reduced mortgage on the other half?

I know very little about buying/selling property, but surely a sensible person for Emmur to approach would be someone who does it for a living (Lilian)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/07/2019 21:32

This week's cast list gives

Jakob Hakansson: Paul Venables

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/07/2019 21:32

I did google the Jakob actor a while ago now. Can't remember his name but he was vair tasty Grin

As is NuChris.

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/07/2019 21:33

Paul Venables! That's him!

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/07/2019 21:37

He's also a psychotherapist, apparently.

Motoko · 31/07/2019 21:39

Jellytot, I did find her constantly going on about the haves and have nots, very tiring after a while.

echt · 31/07/2019 21:42

While Emma's request for the whole sum Shock from Peggy was mad, Peggy's sententious "neither a borrower nor lender be" was as irritating as its original.

As for Kate, once again, manipulating matters for her own ends - I presume Peggy paid that unnecessary vet's bill - most unlike her. And her sneering at Emma. She is so unpleasant. Does she have a good side? Was there some subtle compare and contrast going on? Real need (Emma) versus a world record chancer (Kate)?

PennyJanuary · 31/07/2019 21:49

Thanks askingquestions! I googled him (maybe strange but I always check out what the actors like like so the voice merges with their images over time). I was about to post an image until I remembered I'd be hung drawn and quartered 😄

PennyJanuary · 31/07/2019 21:49

*look like

SarfE4sticated · 31/07/2019 22:05

Me too. Sad

birdsdestiny · 31/07/2019 22:59

C8 , I thought that too, whilst everyone has been worrying about Wills state of mind, maybe they all should have been worrying about Ed.

EBearhug · 01/08/2019 01:39

I was at the swimming pool, and in the next changing cubicle, I heard, "I was listening to the Archers..." and I couldn't hear the rest. I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to come out without knowing a bit more.

Actually it. was Emma I was wondering about. Like her or not she burns the candle at three ends trying to get together the money, helping Clarrie pick up the slack or messes cerated by the Grundy men, trying to insulate the kids against poverty. The asking of random people for money coupled with Ruth and Peggy's responses in particular might just be too much. At the moment she seems more anxious about it than Ed who she is having to chivvy out to look for work.

birdsdestiny · 01/08/2019 07:10

I think if they are going to tackle that storyline it will be a man. I could see a sl where Ed blames himself and thinks his family will be better off without him. Then again as the grundies have lost Nic and soon Joe, I hope they won't be that heartless.

QuaterMiss · 01/08/2019 07:29

One thing they seem to have neglected in the Grundy débâcle is that Joe would have noticed that something is wrong. (It’s very weird that in my head he’s already gone, when in fact he’s still alive and apparently well at Grange Farm.) He’s generally pretty sensitive where Ed is concerned. I hope they’ll manage to include a line or two about his having asked if things are ok.

Really missing him in this story. Sad

IrisAtwood · 01/08/2019 07:37

Really missing him in this story.

Me too. I can still hear his reassuring voice.

Eastie77 · 01/08/2019 08:05

Each character Emma has approached for has reacted as if they've been asked for money by a relative stranger rather than a young woman they've known since she was a child.

I wonder if the horrified "I'm more than offended/astounded" sneering responses are because she's a lowly Grundy/Horribin(sp?)

I'd like to think someone like Pat would be much kinder but then again I thought Ruth would be sympathetic and was completely taken aback by her response.

PennyJanuary · 01/08/2019 08:10

I agree eastie77, it's odd that no one has responded with questions - what's happened, are you okay?, etc. And someone like Peggy with a financial advisor on speed dial may actually have been able to help with professional advice if not money. It's really sad.
