Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Didn't Will dismiss his assistant gamekeeper a couple of months ago? He has been struggling ever since.... with the workload...with the childcare...and now it is the school holidays... Presumably he has authority to hire/fire.

In the meantime, can somebody give Ed a lift into Felpersham to Citizens Advice and the Job Centre or help him shift all the dodgy weedkiller so he is no longer breaking the law (or does he have to be selling the weedkiller to be breaking the law, rather than simply storing it)?

Has Emmur asked Peggy for a loan yet?

SpaceDinosaur · 31/07/2019 11:53

I feel so sorry for Emma. Yes we saw this coming miles off and you know Ed's gonna wind up in prison when the police find the pesticides on the barn too so even if they get the house I bet they'll lose it. Sad

MrsGrindah · 31/07/2019 12:55

I really hope we don’t have yet another prison storyline. It’s getting a bit ridiculous given the size of the Ambridge population!

Can you imagine how Hannah is going to gloat over this ( if they ever bring her back!).

Also , why does Neil have to make an appointment at the bank? And surely he wouldn’t go behind Susan’s back? Can’t he apply online for a loan...she would have had the money by now.

Eastie77 · 31/07/2019 13:06

I can't believe Clarrie and Susan haven't already caught wind of this, particularly in view of Emma's begging spree.

BertrandRussell · 31/07/2019 14:04

Is the pesticides in the barn a prison thing? If Brian didn’t end up inside it would be really shocking if Ed does..

ppeatfruit · 31/07/2019 14:35

Thanks for the new thread gasp, i've had my on line break.

Does anyone remember how much Ed got for Peppa the ram?

I wouldn't think that storing the pesticides is against the law surely only if there's a leak.

Oliver should cough up some cash, he got them into the mess to begin with.

BertrandRussell · 31/07/2019 14:54

I think i’d be pretty pissed off if I was Ruth. The fact that Emma used information she had overheard in the pub and then said that about a windfall and “doing some good” with it.

ppeatfruit · 31/07/2019 15:12

Yes but Ruth isn't usually so unfeeling, also she sneered at "wilding" which Feebs and Rex are suggesting to win Peggy's pounds. I would think she'd be aware how desperately the wildlife need specific wild areas. Are they changing her character?

TherapistInATabard · 31/07/2019 15:56

Ed really ought to go to Harrison and tell him everything, plead ignorance/naivety or whatever.

omafiet · 31/07/2019 15:59

I think Ruth was a little harsh. When Emma said "Sorry, I've offended you" her reply was "You've done more than that!" I'm sure she was surprised but she sounded more pushed off about the intrusion into her finances than anything else. I'm a little surprised that more people aren't thinking "She sounds desperate, I should ask her if she's ok."

Arpafeelie · 31/07/2019 16:15

Perhaps Ruth would have been more sympathetic if Emma had just asked for a loan, without mentioning that Kenton had been discussing Brookfield finances in the Bull. Ruth was probably annoyed with Kenton and took it out on Emma. After all, the whole Kenton / David / loan situation had already caused enough grief without the whole thing being brought up again.

Arpafeelie · 31/07/2019 16:18

Also, if Ruth had asked Emma if she was ok, what was Emma going to say? She could hardly risk getting Ed into trouble by telling people about the illegal weedkiller.

Does Emma know the weedkiller is still in the barn?

£5,000.

omafiet · 31/07/2019 16:41

Emma may not have felt very comfortable telling Ruth what was wrong, but wouldn't it have been the compassionate thing to ask?

ppeatfruit · 31/07/2019 16:43

Thanks Asking .

autumntimebrowns · 31/07/2019 16:55

I think the weed killer should be in a properly locked up fully bundled chemical store. With up to date coshh paperwork ( might be called something else now - it's ten years since I was in farming )and all the health and safety equipment to hand. Not stashed in the corner of a pole barn. Imagine in kids got in there or there was a fire. Health and safety executive and the fire service would have plenty to say. And would prosecute

autumntimebrowns · 31/07/2019 16:56

That's bunded not bundled. Blooming auto correct always thinks it knows best Smile

EBearhug · 31/07/2019 19:01

This. And still COSHH, I think.

Motoko · 31/07/2019 19:31

I wondered how long it would take to ask Peggy. And the whole amount too, just as I said!

How (in)convenient that Oliver's in Italy, with a sketchy internet connection, making asking him for help, tricky.

Emma doesn't seem to realise that as they've exchanged contracts, it's all set in stone now, including completion dates, and if they don't go through with completion, they'll lose their deposit. All that money that they scrimped and saved, gone!

DoctorTwo · 31/07/2019 19:59

Emma needs an intervention.

LassOfFyvie · 31/07/2019 20:27

Kate and Jakob ???

LassOfFyvie · 31/07/2019 20:33

I wondered too.

Kate really is awful- imagine being too lazy to let Hilda out of her basket after taking her back from the vet.

jellytot24 · 31/07/2019 20:39

Just found this thread so working through it as quickly as possible. For what it's worth I just have to ask, does anyone else find Emma's constant moaning a real drain?!
Currently 3 weeks behind on the podcast but will catch up asap

PennyJanuary · 31/07/2019 20:42

Does anyone know the name of the actor who plays Jacob the vet?

C8H10N4O2 · 31/07/2019 20:47

The fact that Emma used information she had overheard in the pub and then said that about a windfall and “doing some good” with it.

Then Ruth's issue is with Kenton. He was talking about it in the pub why wouldn't Emma assume its public knowledge?

I was just surprised that Ruth was so unkind and not even asking what the issue was for one of her employees to behave so out of character.

Kate was of course a steaming hypocrite and there was no reason why Peggy should lend the money but did she really have to rub it in with that nasty little snipe about "neither a lender nor a borrower be"? Is she seriously suggesting they bought the pub without a mortgage or that Jack made his squillions without ever using. a bank loan or investors?
