Thread #106: Jim’s in a jam, Peggy’s made a pickle and Lexi is blooming - sounds like the entries are lining up for this year’s flower and produce show, but who will be on the organising committee?

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to LillianGish for the title of this thread.

Holding episode tonight, I thought - not much progress on any current storyline. I was a touch surprised Natasha wasn't offended by the postnup idea but I suspect she's biding her time.

Good question Asking!

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2019 19:17

Have I mentioned that I don't like Pip?

Motoko · 23/07/2019 19:24

Gawd, Phoebe was being annoying. It was obvious Pip was distracted, and Rex was correct, the party wasn't the time or place to speak to Pip about it. I wish they'd written it so that they didn't get a chance to speak to her about it tonight.

It does look like Rex will be Tom's supplier. As soon as he says yes, Tom will be getting him to look after his pigs, as well as Neil's. I wonder how that will work out?

Motoko · 23/07/2019 19:26

Ha MUM, you might have done, once or twice!

Fink · 23/07/2019 19:31

BertrandRussell: Justin ... is a substantial late middle aged country gentleman.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime: He is not a country gentleman, or a gentleman at all.

Neither is he middle aged, late or otherwise. Lillian is 72 and I don't believe we've ever had reason to think he's substantially younger than her. There was all that silliness over her 70th birthday, where she didn't want him to know how old she was, but that seemed to be largely about her insecurities rather than any indication of his age.

Basically, he's a horrible man who has had a rebrand as an affable entrepreneur. But he's still a bastard. Not that his age has anything to do with it, other than that he's had long enough to grow out of the being a bastard phase but has apparently chosen to pass the opportunity by and remain a bastard.

DadDadDad · 23/07/2019 20:21

I don't think Justin was ever described as a hedge fund manager, was he? His outfit, Damara Capital, is a company which develops agricultural land - they are a specialist property developer, employing the likes of Charlie (and Rob Confused ) to run agri-business, a sort of bigger version of Borchester Land.

Hedge funds are a whole other level - I don't think Justin's in that strata of wealth.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 23/07/2019 20:25

Agricultural land sometimes has hedges.....Hmm

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/07/2019 20:29

He was definitely described as a hedge fund manager, early on when he was still being played by Terence Harvey, DDD, I promise you. Whether that was just Brian being rude, I have no idea.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/07/2019 20:36

I continue to regard Justin as being one of Sean O'Connor's less likeable introductions to the programme, anyhow. Rob was already there when SO'C arrived, so he doesn't count even though he was changed by O'C and Stimpson from being a "replacement Brian" to an abusive lowlife, but there were also the Fairbrethren, NuTom, NuPip, NuFreddie, NuKate, Charlie Thomas, Johnny (as opposed to Rich) Phillips, Harrison Burns, Carol Tregorran, NuDan, NuJosh, and replacement Tony -- the last wasn't SO'C's choice. All in SO'C's first year as editor. There may be others but I can't think of them offhand.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/07/2019 20:37

Oh yes: NuDan (as opposed to Daniel).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/07/2019 21:14

New thread in the morning, I think. Any more title suggestions?

echt · 23/07/2019 21:24

An episode where the know-nothings, i.e. Phoebe and Toby, badger Pip and Rex respectively. At a party.

Are the ball ponds the thing at parties for one year-olds?

MrsGrindah · 23/07/2019 21:33

Possible thread title “ Beware the Ambridge Dragons den! Peggy looking for the perfect pitch but it’s only a matter of time before Joe declares “ I’m out”!

Hope that’s not too disrespectful.

BertrandRussell · 23/07/2019 21:45

Fuck me that was a crap episode....

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2019 21:52

Isn't he Johnny Richards?

DadDadDad · 23/07/2019 22:07

Well, I suspect Brian (or the SW) didn't know what he was talking about if he called Justin a hedge fund manager. That would imply someone who takes a load of investors' money and seeks to trade in the investment markets (or in derivatives and more exotic stuff) to deliver them a big return in a relatively short term (a few years), not someone buying land to develop a piggery that would deliver a steady return in the long term (presumably also speculating that the land would increase in value).

But it never quite made sense that Damara started out as some big City player hoovering up BL, and now seems to be Justin's little boutique operation which is focused on Ambridge and the surrounding area.

LostInNorfolk · 23/07/2019 22:23

Well the next thread will possibly be the one where Lexi doesn't hand the baby over?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/07/2019 22:37

Cast lists say
Johnny Phillips: Tom Gibbons

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/07/2019 12:08

I suppose that's Eamonn's surname. Richards was definitely Sharon's family name.
