Thread #106: Jim’s in a jam, Peggy’s made a pickle and Lexi is blooming - sounds like the entries are lining up for this year’s flower and produce show, but who will be on the organising committee?

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to LillianGish for the title of this thread.

Holding episode tonight, I thought - not much progress on any current storyline. I was a touch surprised Natasha wasn't offended by the postnup idea but I suspect she's biding her time.

I'll be really pleased if Gnasher does do that - will serve the whole ghastly lot right.

Motoko · 07/07/2019 10:56

Listening again, the bit when Shula knocks at the door. I've only just registered, she knocked once, and before Alistair got to the door, she knocked again, so he had to call out something like "Yes, yes, I'm coming." How impatient is she? She's really pestering Alistair. Grrr! I wish she would go on that months long trip that precipitated the divorce. She spends so much time with Alistair, I wonder why she bothered getting divorced.

My dislike for her just grows and grows!

ppeatfruit · 07/07/2019 11:00

It might be me being stupid , ref the Art Project. But wouldn't it make sense just to make a list of all the ideas, have it copied and get the village to vote on which one they like best,? Like a ballot paper and the one with most votes wins Grin

I suppose the SW's need to have ways of making everything complicated to give Alan and Shula excuses to converse (do we think maybe that Usha has left him and there's a possiblity of a 'proper relationship' between them?). Grin

What became of Jazzer's mother and brother, then?

Are they still at Meadow Rise?

DadDadDad · 07/07/2019 11:24

Listening just now to Tim, I wonder if he was telling the truth. Of course, it would be naive to think that Tim doesn't play games with Ed, but he seemed pretty adamant that he knew nothing about the rear-ending (rather than just resorting to a more mafia-type ambiguous "this is the kind of thing that happens if you mess with these people").

He can see that Ed is serious about quitting even with these threats and appears nervous himself about what happens if Ed does that. Why would he say "two more weeks" if he knew that were untrue? He can tell Ed will definitely quit if that deadline passes without the "work" coming to an end and I think Tim is fearful of what he himself will suffer if that happens.

Possibly the SW want to find a way to wrap this story up - either with Ed being caught and the whole house move falling through, or a bit more of a cautionary tale with Em finding out and them moving but with a serious rift between them.

birdsdestiny · 07/07/2019 11:26

Yes I wondered that, I had assumed that they were in Scotland, which explained their absence. Obviously not. Perhaps they live with Kathy and Jamie.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 07/07/2019 12:37

Shouldn't that be 'damp squib'?

ppeatfruit · 07/07/2019 13:11

Yes I hope you're right Dad The Tim actor is good.

DadDadDad · 07/07/2019 13:36

@WheresThatCatGoneNow - I assume @MikeUniformMike is a fan of The IT Crowd and the classic damp squid scene.

Is the stenographer at 1:25 Natasha? Shock

DadDadDad · 07/07/2019 13:45

OK, I've done my research, and no, the stenographer is Alexandra Roach, not Mali Harries.

DadDadDad · 07/07/2019 13:47

I've just realised that Cat is probably well aware of that scene and was riffing off Mike's comment accordingly... Confused

MikeUniformMike · 07/07/2019 16:49

Of course it should be a damp squib, but in Mustardland days it was damp squid. There were also tropical inserts.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 07/07/2019 19:52

I actually cringed when Adam, Tom and Gnasher were smugly sniggering about 'not having to humour the pickers'.

It just sounded really nasty and patronising.

MrsGrindah · 07/07/2019 20:30

Especially since if it wasn’t for the pickers Adam and Ian wouldn’t have met Lexi!

echt · 07/07/2019 22:04

The insistence of Alidatir on getting Jim to open up borders on badgering, or is this the SWs way of showing the audience how not to help the traumatised.

Jim's intention was to make neighbourly amends was , I thought, very Jim; well reasoned in the context of memories of his lovely wife, and then Alistair tries to shut him down! He really needs to shut up and accept that this is part of Jim's progress.

I'm sure the whole thing will pan out with embarrassed villagers backing off saying no...not at all, etc. but it's the intention that counts.

I also liked Jim being back on form with the lecture about bacon. Tip-top.

They can't be; we were told a few years back that it had been demolished.

LillianGish · 07/07/2019 23:40

I agree echt and I think this is how the matter will be resolved for Jim. Not with months of counselling or attempting a prosecution, but with a decision by Jim to put the matter behind him and move forward. I also enjoyed hearing the old Jim with his bacon rasher-nalising. I hope Alistair and others will allow him to deal with it in his own way.

I hope you're right, but fear you're wrong. He's sounded calm a couple of times before and then broken down again. I think his apparent equilibrium may not be stable and could easily be upset - possibly not immediately.

ppeatfruit · 08/07/2019 09:35

True Mrs Grindah But it must be stressful to suddenly have a load of people (some of whom can't speak English) that you have to care for properly every year.

Odd that the SWs didn't pick up on the dramatic content that could have been mined considering that was Freddie dealing drugs with the pickers , while Lexi was in charge.

BuckingFrolics · 08/07/2019 09:36

Yawn.

Yawn.

Yawn.

DadDadDad · 08/07/2019 09:41

bacon rasher-nalising

Nicely done, LilG. I'd add to the pig-related puns, but I fear it might boar Bucking further. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 08/07/2019 09:45

Discussing the process of bacon-making might provide the cure for that.

LillianGish · 08/07/2019 09:57

We could chew the fat on this one all morning.

MikeUniformMike · 08/07/2019 10:07

You're just scratching around for puns

ErrolTheDragon · 08/07/2019 10:47

I expect DDD has some more puns salted away for later.
