Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to LillianGish for the title of this thread.

Holding episode tonight, I thought - not much progress on any current storyline. I was a touch surprised Natasha wasn't offended by the postnup idea but I suspect she's biding her time.

LauderSyme The Archers Archives manages a double page spread on Ryan Kelly (Jazzer actor) without explaining how he came into existence. The first mention of the character I can see is in 2000 when the Grundys were made bankrupt and moved to Meadow Rise:

It all got too much for young Edward, who sought refuge with his new mate Jazzer McCreary.

Jazzer also lived in Meadow Rise iirc. Ed would have been around 16 at the time; presumably they were in the same year at school.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2019 12:35

They are of a similar age group.

What's happened to Russ? Is Freddie still at The Stables?

birdsdestiny · 05/07/2019 13:06

There are all sorts of abandoned storylines at the moment. What about Helen's karate man, (I have forgotten his name), was that it?, is he never to be seen again and if so what was the point. It seems a lot of effort to introduce a character just to show us that Helen isn't ready for a relationship yet.

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 13:43

Thank you Quater I will check out the Archive.

Karate man was Lee. I am hoping he will come back at some point and Helen will be ready to share her story with him, and he will understand and they will live happily ever after. A lot was made about 'just knowing' when you meet 'the one'.

Cheap - as long as you don’t want a brand new copy.

DoctorTwo · 05/07/2019 13:55

What makes you think a rise in interest rates (at least steady, regular rises) will be a problem for the banks?

The lack of wage increase since the banks (other than Northern Rock) were bailed out, allied with increases in general living costs, mean imo that without QE our banks are bankrupt. HSBC should be forced into bankruptcy as they are constitionally corrup and have been found so through the FCA and the US authorities. Why none of their bosses are in jail is beyond me. RBS, through various offshoots, have put too many businesses and people in debt hell.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 05/07/2019 14:23

I'm finding this new, improved 'agreeable' Natasha distinctly unnerving Shock

Is it genuine, do we think?

Also, have I misunderstood, or did Tom not tell Pat&Tony that he and Gnasher wouldn't be competing for Peggy's Prize Pot?

If so, does debt ridden Gnasher know yet?

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2019 14:31

She's always been unnerving. She flew in from nowhere and is now part of the Ambridge Archer family.

Fink · 05/07/2019 14:31

The other weird thing about Justin and Lillian, having relistened, is how he is complaining about not seeing Lillian while talking to Lillian. They were having time together right then. Since when does time together only have to be in the evening?!

Also, that even Tony thinks the heckling exchange was hilarious. Fair enough if the happy couple want to air their dirty linen in public, but how anyone else could have found it side-splittingly funny is beyond me.

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 15:09

WheresThatCat Great username Smile

I think Gnasher is just biding her time, messing with Tom's head by blowing hot then cold thus reeling him ever more tightly in.

IIRC Tom did tell Pat and Tony they wouldn't compete, I think Tony expressed happiness that Tom was supportive of his take on the whole thing. But now they've changed their minds and Tom is waiting for the right moment to say so.

MrsGrindah · 05/07/2019 15:39

Where is Rex these days? And Hannah? Nobody even mentions them

ErrolTheDragon · 05/07/2019 16:25

Also, that even Tony thinks the heckling exchange was hilarious. Fair enough if the happy couple want to air their dirty linen in public, but how anyone else could have found it side-splittingly funny is beyond me.

Maybe that was a sibling thing?
Is it just me who sometimes forgets that tony is Lillian and Jenny's brother? He doesn't really 'go' with them. That can happen in families, but he really does seem a very different character.

Abra1de · 05/07/2019 16:57

Natasha wants to win Peggy's grant and invest in her fruit juice business via planting trees. Then, if her business booms and she and Tom don't last, she can walk away without sharing the success with him. This was someone else's view here, just paraphrasing!

TheSilveryPussycat · 05/07/2019 17:07

Lauder asks and have you actually been listening since the very start?!

Well, yes in a way. My maternal grandmother listened to it from the beginning, and never missed an episode in the 15 years before she died. My mum also listened. As I was born in 1952, I could well have heard TA in the womb Grin, although I haven't listened continually since then.

DadDadDad · 05/07/2019 17:35

Is it just me who sometimes forgets that tony is Lillian and Jenny's brother?

No, it's me too - I mentioned it on a previous thread when the three were in a car staking out Peggy's house to identify the strange man she had been seen with. The sibling arguing on that occasion was quite entertaining.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/07/2019 19:22

The Archers Archives is difficult for consulting, because it has neither a contents list nor an index. You just have to read through it and hope to happen across what you want.... But I prefer other reference books like The Book of The Archers which has the characters alphabetically by surname. It only goes as far as 1994, though, and there is a gap between that and when Lowfield starts in 1996. The other alphetical-by-surname book is The Archers Encyclopaedia from 2001, so one has to look for Jazzer in Lowfield.

Lowfield first has Jazzer appearing in Ambridge in June 2001 and being useless at helping with haymaking. He and Ed over-loaded a wagon, rode on top and the whole lot fell over outside the Bull and blocked access to the car-park. He was still living at Meadow Rise then, and he got Ed involved in twocking during that summer. He and Ed and Fallon started a band together and he spent a lot of his time in Ambridge in 2001 and 2002; at the beginning of 2005 Tom employed him as a pig-man, in 2006 Mike employed him as a milkman, and Jazzer was almost always in Ambridge except when Ed needed to be sleeping at his place for whatever reason. But he was living with his mother and brother at Meadow Rise all that time.

He walked out of Meadow Rise because his brother was stealing from him, and actually moved to Ambridge, in September 2010.

MrsGrindah · 05/07/2019 19:32

Well that was a bit of a letdown re MeanEd.Basically someone ran into the back of her and did a bit of damage. Ridiculous that Ed was insistently asking her if she knew who it was.She would have told him surely. I’m going to stop reading the BBC schedule descriptions of future episodes as they always make them sound more exciting than they are

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2019 19:44

Of course they do. Always a damp squid...

TheSilveryPussycat · 05/07/2019 20:07

I think that, having been threatened, Ed would immediately think of those threats, and thus be trying to get any scap of information Emma might remember.

Poor Jim!! It's far too soon to be talking about counsellors.

Fink · 05/07/2019 20:25

TheSilveryPussycat Not only should Ed remember Timotei's explicit threat to do pretty much what happened today, but Tim should also remember it and at least credit Ed with not being so completely stupid that he would have forgotten- his 'why on earth would you think I had anything to do with it?' was baffling.

Taswama · 05/07/2019 21:08

What is twocking AskingQuestions

LillianGish · 05/07/2019 22:41

Taking without consent - it's instead of theft for cars because there is no intention to permanently deprive the owner of the car (ie breaking in, driving off in it and leaving it somewhere else).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/07/2019 22:43

Taking Without Owner's Consent; it's police slang for joyriding, originally, and then escaped into the wild.

EBearhug · 06/07/2019 01:46

Tim should also remember it and at least credit Ed with not being so completely stupid that he would have forgotten- his 'why on earth would you thinkIhad anything to do with it?' was baffling.

He's gas-lighting Ed and implying he'said as much innocent victim, unable to escape as Ed. He wants Ed to get this message so that if Emma called the police or anything, there's no hint of Tim''s involvement.

LillianGish · 06/07/2019 08:29

I’ve thought all along that Peggy’s slightly improbable charitable scheme would be seized on by debt-ridden Gnasher and I can’t help thinking that the equally improbable post-nup is going to be there for the same reason. She’s going to somehow get her hands the half a million and then hang on to it.
