Thread #106: Jim’s in a jam, Peggy’s made a pickle and Lexi is blooming - sounds like the entries are lining up for this year’s flower and produce show, but who will be on the organising committee?

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to LillianGish for the title of this thread.

Holding episode tonight, I thought - not much progress on any current storyline. I was a touch surprised Natasha wasn't offended by the postnup idea but I suspect she's biding her time.

Having been involved in writing bids for projects in a previous life, there is no way £500k will fund the international research centre Adam is thinking of with visiting academics and researchers etc, it won't come close.

There has been no mention of using Peggy's money to pull in match funding to make a project meaningful etc which would be the obvious thing to do.

I doubt that Willow Farm has ensuite bathrooms and things so an extra person would make a difference.

Madcats · 02/07/2019 15:42

When did Home Farm get its cherry trees?

Who is going to pick them?

QuaterMiss · 02/07/2019 15:58

so an extra person would make a difference.

Quite. At least Phoebe knew Lexi, and she knows Kirsty. Having a strange man move in is a different thing altogether.

MikeUniformMike · 02/07/2019 16:07

Especially one who is almost old enough to be your grandfather.
Willow Farm isn't huge.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/07/2019 16:08

I doubt that Willow Farm has ensuite bathrooms and things so an extra person would make a difference.

Her college accommodation probably wasn't all en-suite either, I would imagine blokes (albeit younger than Philip) in various states of undress will not exactly shock her.Grin

QuaterMiss · 02/07/2019 16:08

Btw - surely Oxford doesn’t provide Law Conversion courses? I know things have changed since I was an undergrad. And I know a million greedy places offer it now ...

I was thinking she’d be taking an MA (and then possibly moving on to a PhD) in something academic.

But the SWs will have her doing academic research on post-Brexit cross-Channel farm employment - at Felpersham Uni.

MerdedeBrexit · 02/07/2019 16:16

Oxford Brookes does a Law conversion course (GDL). She writes, not very helpfully Grin

Motoko · 02/07/2019 17:08

But Philip and Kirsty won't be there for much longer, so it'll only be cramped temporarily.

We've had 5 adults living in our house with only 1 bathroom, for a lot longer, and as long as everyone remembered they weren't the only person who might need the bathroom, it was fine.

BuckingFrolics · 02/07/2019 17:14

And another thing about Phoebe, after 3 years doing an ultra competitive degree that (all too) often leads to some of the most plum careers imaginable, would she really focus on "rebranding" Adams idea? Would she not be way more interested in exploring its political and economic potential? Fart-arsing about with a name, is a Gnasher response.

DDD Adam has feet of clay

Madcats
When did Home Farm get its cherry trees?

Adam first talked about getting them in 2005, planted them in 2010, and in 2012 Ian helped with the harvest -- mostly to stop Adam from over-exerting himself shortly after he'd been coshed on the head.

LillianGish · 02/07/2019 19:20

Btw - surely Oxford doesn’t provide Law Conversion courses? I haven't got the first clue - you are probably right (indeed I bow to your superior knowledge). I was trying to think of something that would qualify her to do something useful to help the citizens of Ambridge.

Abra1de · 02/07/2019 20:07

Something is confusing me. Emma and others seem to think that the half million goes in some way to the people running the project, rather than just to the project itself. Is Peggy paying for a scheme that will employ one of her family? Do they draw a salary from it?

Fink · 02/07/2019 20:08

Oxford don't do a law conversion course, but they do offer senior status for a lot of undergraduate courses, including law. Senior status is for anyone who already has a degree and it enables you to skip the first year of the course up to first year exams. It's not popular as you can't get student finance for it so you almost certainly have to self-fund (there are a few scholarships).

I don't think Phoebe would do that, IRL. Who knows what lazy SWs would do with her.

I know a lot of people who read PPE (I was involved with student politics, which attracted a disproportionate number of them). They mainly seem to have gone into think tanks, third sector work, or journalism. A few are in party politics. I don't think they'll put Phoebe doing overt politics. Maybe she'll do a PGCE, that would enable the SWs to keep their options open as to whether she'll ever be local or will go off elsewhere.

Madcats · 02/07/2019 20:10

Thank you Asking. Those cherries wouldn't have liked the relentless June cold and south-west rain. Will it be Phoebe's summer job to pick them?

I'm going to spend the evening wondering how you would end up with "immediately recognisable" guacamole behind the sofa (I'd have blamed Hilda!).

Motoko · 02/07/2019 20:34

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd have immediately recognised gaucamole. I'd have suspected it was something Hilda had hocked up, or the mummified corpse of a mouse. (Can you tell I have cats?!)

MrsGrindah · 02/07/2019 20:37

I thought it was avocado not guacamole ( she said pedantically)

Madcats · 02/07/2019 20:57

@MrsGrindah I grew up in an age when satsumas were a Christmas treat, so bear with me on avocados.....

Yes, I can scoop out a kiwi fruit with a spoon, but do people do that with avos and then drop loads behind the sofa? Asking as a mum of a daughter who has scope to be a bit of a slacker.

I'm blaming Hilda!

LassOfFyvie · 02/07/2019 21:17

Gnasher's playing a blinder of a bluff isn't she? If she refused the post nup they know she's a wrong 'un but the more she says it's reasonable the more idiot Tom digs his heels in.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/07/2019 21:28

Emma said avocado then she said guacamole (which is made from avocado so much the same).

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 02/07/2019 21:47

Guacamole or avocado would go brown within minutes anyway so definitely would be fairly indistinguishable from something Hilda might have deposited. Envy

MollyButton · 02/07/2019 22:28

I wonder if the conversation today will pave the way for Kirsty to win the money?

birdsdestiny · 02/07/2019 22:33

That would be fantastic but I just can't see the money going to a non archer.
Peggy is just not very nice when it comes down to it.

DadDadDad · 02/07/2019 22:36

DDD Adam has feet of clay

@BuckingFrolics - that's a great man-ure talking about! Shock

Has anyone on MN ever used Envy to mean envy. That should just accept the inevitable and relabel it [boak].

DadDadDad · 02/07/2019 22:37

*They should just...
