Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit and more recently when someone forgot they had promised to start the next thread, ahem.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from this thread, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks also to LillianGish for the splendid thread title. As actor Edward Kelsey died last month, we have probably heard Joe Grundy for the last time, or will do very shortly. Sad RIP Mr Kelsey; many thanks for creating a wonderfully vivid character, gnarly toenails and all.

As pointed out on the last thread, we're getting very close now to the 100th birthday of June Spencer, who plays Peggy Woolley. What an achievement! I hope the team manage to squeeze Peggy into that day's episode, come what may.

CeciledeVolange

Have just deleted a long rant in order not to waste more space but good to know I’m not alone in my views

I have deleted many long rants on the portrayal of MH and disability in TA. I suspect many people living with the reality have done the same.

BTW - do you mean "Gender, Sex & Gossip"?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2019 11:12

Who's autistic? ConfusedThe new vet? Maybe they're not going to 'tackle autism', merely have a character who has some non NT traits - that mightn't be so bad?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2019 11:14

Cecile - your posts aren't 'wasting space' at all, far from it.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 26/05/2019 11:18

Oh heavens - Natasha just did the first name, surname thing. She is the new Joe. ShockGrin

Who we’ll never hear again (unless the Grundys decide to move to Northumberland, when he’ll return to haunt Eddie into seeing sense).

MardyLardy · 26/05/2019 11:26

I bet she's regretting THAT decision...grin
Oh yes I bet she is. It would, at least, be interesting to hear more of her and Kate.

ppeatfruit · 26/05/2019 12:04

No George not keyboard, just tiredness. Our lovely old cat yowls at night (almost all night sometimes).

So I just heard the film and gnasher seems to be what she always was. A bit unbalanced. Tom should be careful.

MollyButton · 26/05/2019 12:22

I have a suspicion that they could be throwing a few red herrings at present.
Elizabeth is diagnosed but we have Jakob, David's weird blow up at Kenton (pretty much out of nowhere) and now Natasha.
I'm not sure which one they are going to go with.

CeciledeVolanges · 26/05/2019 12:34

It was very poignant hearing him again - although my heart did turn over a bit when Clarrie found them sleeping, I thought she wouldn’t be able to wake him!

EBearhug · 26/05/2019 13:46

Peggy was out of character with the sacking.

I bet she's regretting THAT decision...

Yes, I would quite like to hear an update on the current living arrangements there, to know how things are progressing. I guess it's not too long before the end of term, so we'll probably be hearing from Phoebe soon, which often beings out Kate.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 26/05/2019 14:21

If Phoebe is fruit picking again I will be writing some stiff words to the BBC. Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 14:32

Sometimes I don't switch off immediately the closing theme comes on as I like to hear the CA (especially if it is Eggy). Today's CA after the omnibus brought a tear to my eye.

chemenger · 26/05/2019 14:52

Can I second the PP who suggested that if you are going to comment on the CA it would be nice to give an idea of what they said, for us podcast listeners? We don’t hear the CA.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 15:01

The omnibus had the last recorded episodes with Edward Kelsey.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/05/2019 15:58

(I hope it's ok here to cast back a page or two if I hadn't read it until today)

There's information about payment for acting in The Archers at downloads.bbc.co.uk/radio/commissioning/equity-audio-agreement.pdf
You have to search for "Archers" and then it comes up. It's for last year; I don't know if there is a new one issued last December, but it didn't seem to come up when I went looking.

I have a feeling that one of the actors, possibly Charles Collingwood, has said that in order to simulate kissing for the radio they used to kiss the backs of their hands in the days of mono recording, but now it is in stereo they do actually kiss each other because otherwise it doesn't sound right.

And (general) I don't think there is an entail at Lower Loxley Hall, I think that Nigel left it to Freddie in his will, and a trust was set up because Freddie was a minor child at the time, being eleven years old or whatever it was. (I know that wasn't what you were asking, but I think the SWs got round any possible entail complications that way.) I asked A Lawyer about them because I wondered about LL, and I was told you can't set up a new entail. Nigel certainly didn't seem to inherit because of one.

LillianGish · 26/05/2019 16:27

I don’t think Natasha is bipolar, just as I don’t think the new vet is autistic (though he does seem to have asd traits). The SW don’t cope well with any long-term conditions - Bethany was quickly shipped off to Birmingham, Jazzer (and Ed if it comes to it) never suffered any long-term side effects of drug abuse, likewise Brian’s epilepsy. Elizabeth’s depression is centre stage at the moment, but will pass and be forgotten like Pat’s. I think the root of Natasha’s behaviour will be something more sinister - there will be some aspect of her life that Tom doesn’t yet know about (marrying in haste etc). Cecile I am so sorry to hear about your partner. It must make very difficult listening for you, but you shouldn’t read any parallels into your situation and what is happening with Tom and Natasha. I wouldn’t encourage Tom to take Natasha back no questions asked because I think her disappearance only serves to highlight how little he knows about her. He is afraid to challenge her any way because he fears she will disappear again which is no basis for a relationship. The relationship is entirely on her terms.

LassOfFyvie · 26/05/2019 16:34

Possibly some one qualified in English law will put this into plain English but the gist seems to support what you say- if Nigel didn't inherit via an entail why would he have set one up? And I think it is also saying you can't create a new one after 1996. It is more probable LL is held in a discretionary trust, but not an entail and I don't think it is plausible for one minute that Lily is not provided for.

Also if I'm reading the article correctly it seems to be difficult to raise secured borrowing on entailed property. In real life businesses like LL are likely to operate on a business overdraft facility but one which is secured rather than unsecured.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fee_tail?wprov=sfla1

Warning it needs to be pointed out this article is correct in what it says about entails in Scots law but what it says about not being able to disinherit children and spouses is not correct. You can't completely cut children out of of moveable property (cash, shares, jewelry, paintings etc.) but you can cut them completely out of land and houses and you can cut spouses out out to an extent too- so the rest of it might be inaccurate too.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/05/2019 16:45

George, Phoebe won't be fruit picking at Home Farm as they aren't growing strawberries this year - Alice was furious as it meant they couldn't try out her firm's new machine. But yes, she should be looking for a proper job now.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2019 16:58

Phoebe should have been doing something other than fruit picking last summer, shouldn't she? I wonder what sort of job a new PPE graduate should be applying for - at the moment would anyone sane want to go down the politics route...

Choccyp1g · 26/05/2019 18:17

Hasn't Adam moved into cherries now?

So there could be cherry-picking opportunities if she wants to just do the nice jobs

ShulasCreamCardiganCollection · 26/05/2019 18:39

Thanks, Fink and 5000Flapjacks and MollyButton and AskingQuestions for lessons in kissing!

And thank you for the legal insights, Cecile and AskingQuestions and Lass - the link sent me down some complex and fascinating rabbit holes of property ownership. (I hadn’t realised that Nigel didn’t inherit via entail, so that all makes much more sense!)

ErrolTheDragon · 26/05/2019 18:50

Hasn't Adam moved into cherries now?

Has he? When did he put the trees in, I wouldn't have thought they'd crop for a year or two (or more).

GeorgeTheBleeder · 26/05/2019 19:07

WE WERE RIGHT!

Fink · 26/05/2019 19:21

As someone who works in the Church, this conversation is ridiculous!

a) Shula doesn't appear to have the first idea how the ordination selection process & training work, what being a priest actually entails etc. I know more than her about the workings of the CofE and it's not the denomination of me or any of my family.

b) Alan didn't have a clue this was coming. What happened to him being trained in listening, approachable & co. She has been hinting at it in conversations ...

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 19:26

What will she want to do next?

Abra1de · 26/05/2019 19:28

Last summer phoebe was still between university years two and three so why shouldn’t she have been doing holiday fruit picking? My undergraduate children have done similar things.
