Archers

We're still here and still discussing TA (The Archers). We welcome newcomers and old hands, so if you have a question or a point of view, please dive in. No spoilers - if you've seen info on future storylines, there's a separate Radio Addicts thread for that.

I loved all the name changes on the last thread. Don't forget to change back! (If you want to).

Who's going to get Russ out of LL? Freddie? Lily? Elizabeth? Or is it Freddie who will head off?

Angelina - I assume you meant a boop, and I agree. Wonderfully touching, Tony patiently coaching Johnny, and Johnny's genuine love for his animals.

Agree that no way would Peggy sack off Emma like that. Some crude SW to bring ED to an ethical dilemma moment at the expense of another Peggy behaving completely out of character. Quite.
AngelinaNeurosurgeon did you ever have cause to put this knowledge into practice? Grin

So hang on- are people saying that because Shula is a Christian she should have stayed in a marriage that was making her unhappy?

I don't think anyone should be made to stay in an unhappy marriage, but the point is that she makes a song and dance of a faith in which vows made before her god are extremely important - until they become inconvenient to her. In fact, however, I find her lying to the police more hypocritical; I wonder if she ever preaches sermons about the values of telling the truth?

echt · 06/04/2019 02:58

I think it's the preaching aspect that grates. Although strictly speaking, adherence to Ten Commandments does mean you have to endure misery if you make vows before the Almighty and then go against them.

But thems the breaks, as YAHWEH did so not say to Moses.

MikeUniformMike · 06/04/2019 07:12

I think Jill will screech when she hears the name and the frequency of the pitch will shatter the Grace Archer Memorial stained glass window.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/04/2019 08:00

I remember a midwife talking about how to do it during an ante-natal class (1980).

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/04/2019 08:01

Emergency baptism that is.

GabrielleNelson · 06/04/2019 08:20

Emergency baptism Hmm

I was brought up in the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) and they have no truck with that kind of thing. I feel myself becoming very Presbyterian indeed when I hear about it, even though I've been an atheist for well over 40 years now. Grin

Did Shula and Alistair have a church blessing? He was divorced, IIRC, so I don't think they could have got married in St Stephen's, but I can't remember now.

Totally agree Peggy would never have treated Emma that way. What on earth are the SWs thinking of? They could have had the chicken factory cutting back on hours in preparation for being able to import chlorinated chicken from the US and lobbed in some social comment about zero hours contracts, the gig economy, Brexit etc etc.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 06/04/2019 08:44

Oh. Now you’ve reminded them - the chicken factory will be next ...

Sad

Who will save them from the inevitable?

thislido · 06/04/2019 09:16

Gabrielle that makes sense now - Alistair referred to the “blessing” last week and I thought it was an odd way to refer to the marriage ceremony, but out it down to my lack of knowledge about such things.

For all those listing Shula’s various misdeeds over the years, I’m still curious as to when you would forgive her enough for preaching a sermon to be OK. Is the answer never? What if a professional member of the clergy does something wrong? Are they henceforth a hypocrite?

I’m also curious how one performs an emergency baptism?

They should be fine for work in food processing factories with Brexit having led to so many southern and eastern European workers going home. Ed and Eddie would probably have a more reliable income that way too. They won’t though because the SW prefer them poor and struggling.

We, if you mean the Synod of MN, then anytime soon. In Church law, I think she's stuffed until she repents, though as brought up in RC, I'm not up in the nuances of the heretical CofE.:o

I’m also curious how one performs an emergency baptism?

My RC great-grandmother, married a Protestant who reneged on promises and refused to have the children baptised RC-style. She baptised her children at the kitchen sink (allegedly), saying afterwards:: The Grace of God first, the devil, hindermost".

The bad dad died after drinking horse liniment when pissed, which just goes to show that God is not mocked.:o

Aethelthryth · 06/04/2019 09:34

I had forgotten about Shula's lying to the police. It was so frustrating that that storyline just fizzled out

BertrandRussell · 06/04/2019 09:39

Well, if Peggy ever darkens the door of St Stephen’s again after Friday, I will definitely be there with a placard........

Acis · 06/04/2019 09:57

The Peggy storyline is also insane because she's not stupid, and must know perfectly well that the chances of getting a decent cleaning job done by Kate are close to zero.

thislido · 06/04/2019 10:19

Echt I assume that was meant to be if you mean the Synod of MN, then NOT anytime soon Grin

StillDumDeDumming · 06/04/2019 10:20

I have Matt Smiths accent. He’s from Northaaaaamton. My fella has a stronger accent than me (being a bit Council - an in joke - im not a snob). We’ve just LA’d and we’d place Tim a bit east of us but not as far as Norfolk. Peterborough way. HTH

thislido · 06/04/2019 10:22

You’ve reminded me of a story of visiting a catholic branch of the family as children and someone overhearing one of the cousins referring to me or my sibling as “a naughty little Protestant”. Imagine her disbelief when it was revealed that we weren’t even Protestants.

thislido · 06/04/2019 10:24

Yes, exactly, it’s not quite Norfolk but it’s a bordering county!

What if a professional member of the clergy does something wrong? Are they henceforth a hypocrite? The crossword compiler Araucaria was an example of a professional member of the clergy who did something wrong - in his case, getting divorced. Arguably, the Church's stance was of benefit to mankind - he lost his living and had to rely on his crossword compiling for income. (Although when his wife died and he was restored to the clergy-ship, it didn't seem to have a noticeable effect on either the quantity or the quality of his output.)

Motoko · 06/04/2019 11:42

I was thinking more about Matt Smith's voice, rather than accent, but I do agree about Tim's accent.

TeenyfTroon · 06/04/2019 12:44

I am totally exasperated. I breathed a sigh of relief when Ed turned Quixote down. For half a second. Peggy finishing Emma - absolutely ridiculous. I know Peggy has some less than endearing ways, but there’s no way she’d behave like that.
Like many on here, I’m so sick of the doom that follows EdnEmmur round. Give us a rest.
Big BOOP for Jonny and Tony though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/04/2019 14:24

As simple as making the sign of the cross and saying 'I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost' if I recall correctly. It was 40 years ago.

EBearhug · 06/04/2019 14:29

I really enjoyed Johnny & Tony, too - except it really annoyed me that he told him to just have a go - without adding that he should scrub up or put on shoulder length gloves.

And then I am annoyed with myself by being annoyed about it...
