Archers

We're still here and still discussing TA (The Archers). We welcome newcomers and old hands, so if you have a question or a point of view, please dive in. No spoilers - if you've seen info on future storylines, there's a separate Radio Addicts thread for that.

I loved all the name changes on the last thread. Don't forget to change back! (If you want to).

Who's going to get Russ out of LL? Freddie? Lily? Elizabeth? Or is it Freddie who will head off?

Oh-oh. Tom hasn't spoken to Jill, and he's lied to Pip about it. I liked how Josh pointed out that they were going to get a stranger to be Rosie's Godparent, and hearing Pip's flustering.

And now we see why Tim's been grooming Ed, but of course, it coincides with Emma losing her cleaning gig at Peggy's. I don't blame her for being pee'd off about it, but her saying Joe's right about rich people, is going to lead to Ed accepting the driving job, because Tim said it was sticking a finger up at the big corporations (another version of rich people not caring about the poor).

I'm getting a bit bored of nothing good ever happening for Ed and Emma. It's relentless.

So from your point of view would it be better if the children of atheists weren't Christened? Do they not get anything from the act of being Christened?
Of course atheists shouldn't Christen their children. What's the point? You can have a naming ceremony with a Humanist performing it, if you want to do something to celebrate. No need to go to a church and pretend you believe in God, in order to welcome a child into the world.
Children don't get anything from being Christened, other than some silver trinkets. They don't understand what's happening.

MikeUniformMike · 05/04/2019 20:02

I'm another one who doesn't think non-Christians shouldn't christen their children. Or be godparents.
A child can chose to be baptised when older.

thislido · 05/04/2019 20:07

I thought perhaps there was some kind of spiritual advantage, or head-start into becoming more Christian later, or that it would make them kind of Christian-by-default until they were older, from a theological point of view.

I suppose I’m thinking of Catholicism and limbo.

BertrandRussell · 05/04/2019 20:11

I think in the old days there was advantage to a baby in being baptised into the Catholic Church- the belief was that an unbaptised baby would go to hell. That doctrine was tempered to limbo- an eternity of nothingness, which was at least better than an eternity of torment. But they go to Heaven now, so......

thislido · 05/04/2019 20:22

Yes, Wikipedia tells me things have moved on in that space.

The Peggy thing was so stupid I almost don’t want to comment on it.

Anyone else wondering about Tim’s accent? He sounds East Anglian to me.

OrchidInTheSun · 05/04/2019 20:25

It's helpful for schools to have baptised children

OrchidInTheSun · 05/04/2019 20:26

Sorry, that was supposed to say SOME schools.

DadDadDad · 05/04/2019 20:28

why do threads have to stay on topic? I like the diversions!

But if you don't do what I say, then I'll... I'll...

...I'll have to accept that the self-regulating randomness of this thread will continue quite happily without any say from me. Grin

What difference can it possibly make to a school that a child has been through a ceremony that they cannot possibly remember. What nonsense. Can baptised children learn better? Behave better?

chemenger · 05/04/2019 20:31

We cross posted Orchid but you are still talking nonsense. Next you will be saying it's useful for Toby to think he can make gin out of whey by distillation (which would be like turning water to wine, so Shula probably thinks she can do it). (See what I did DDD, I got back to TA).

thislido · 05/04/2019 20:33

As in, it’s helpful for getting into Church schools?

DDD Grin

DadDadDad · 05/04/2019 20:33

Ooh, just dug out what I wrote here back in January:

Maybe a more likely scenario is Ed getting roped by Tim into some early morning shifting of goods which turn out to be stolen.

I didn't too badly with that crystal ball! (I know it's not exactly the scenario I suggested, but I'm pleased).

It was wonderful to hear Ed being clear-eyed enough to say no to Tim's dodgy offer.

BertrandRussell · 05/04/2019 20:34

I wasn’t going to go into the school thing. I was sitting on my hands. But if you insist.........Grin

chemenger · 05/04/2019 20:40

Sorry had forgotten about the outlandishly complex system of school allocation in England.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 05/04/2019 20:45

It was wonderful to hear Ed being clear-eyed enough to say no to Tim's dodgy offer.

But that can’t last once he realises Tim won’t be offering him any regular work at all unless he agrees to the illegal driving gig.

I wonder if he’ll discuss it with Emma, and she, with a head full of paint samples and fabric swatches, will persuade him it that he must - because they deserve their house.

birdsdestiny · 05/04/2019 20:46

Yes not being baptised would put you at a distinct disadvantage with many schools in my area.

BertrandRussell · 05/04/2019 20:48

Tim’s going to need that van back too....

GeorgeTheBleeder · 05/04/2019 20:58

So he’ll be under pressure from Eddie as well ...

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/04/2019 20:58

Tim sounds like Matt Crawford's long lost son.

Motoko · 05/04/2019 21:18

I've always thought Tim's voice is very much like Matt Smith/Dr Who, so that's how I visualise him now! But yeah, he could definitely be Matt Crawford's son.

echt · 05/04/2019 21:36

I thought the Tim/ED bit was going to be an Archers-ish version of county lines at first.

Agree that no way would Peggy sack off Emma like that. Some crude SW to bring ED to an ethical dilemma moment at the expense of another Peggy behaving completely out of character.

And who in their right mind would have Kate as a cleaner, she'll do it badly if at all, and will whinge about non-green cleaners. Utterly unconvincing.

DadDadDad · 05/04/2019 22:02

Anyway, surely Pip knows Toby well enough to spot his evasiveness about telling Jill about the middle name? He threw sand in her eyes with "it'll be fine, it'll be fine" and she took it.

So what odds will you give me for what Jill's reaction will be on Sunday:
a - audible gasp on hearing the Name
b - storming out of church
c - quietly seething / crying afterwards and nobody notices (except Leonard?)
d - breeziness - "why on earth did you think I wouldn't like the name? it suits her so well!" (that one's 100 to 1).

I went to a catholic school, decades ago, and we were taught how to perform an emergency baptism on an unbaptised infant in urgent mortal danger; and to use the same method for any Heathen child that would otherwise be In life long danger of going to hell.

thislido · 05/04/2019 22:26

Did they teach first aid too?
