Archers

We're still here and still discussing TA (The Archers). We welcome newcomers and old hands, so if you have a question or a point of view, please dive in. No spoilers - if you've seen info on future storylines, there's a separate Radio Addicts thread for that.

I loved all the name changes on the last thread. Don't forget to change back! (If you want to).

Who's going to get Russ out of LL? Freddie? Lily? Elizabeth? Or is it Freddie who will head off?

It’s definitely easier for interfaith marriage to work when the characters are fictional Grin.

Back in the real world, it’s pretty unusual for vicars (or indeed Rabbis, Imams etc) to have wives of a different faith. I can’t imagine holding views that fundamentally conflicted with my husband’s job. Fortunately I am agnostic where IT Operations are concerned 😂.

Ah, well, there I disagree. I do think Shula has a possessiveness about Alan which goes beyond his role as her priest and which does have a sexual motivation (not acknowledged and she wouldn't act on it, but it's a muddying of the waters).

I agree about the possessiveness but not so sure its sexual in motivation. Or maybe you are right and it isn't aknowledged. I think anyone marrying Alan would have had to deal with boundaries where Shula is concerned.

This is a common phenomen for spouses of ministers of religion. Many wives of ministers could tell similar tales about overly possessive parishioners. I've often wondered if male spouses of ministers experience this to the same degree.

LillianGish · 29/03/2019 09:09

Well I suppose it is possible BoresetshireBlueBalls. She and Usha obviously share a similar taste in men and like Richard Locke, who I sometimes mistake him for if they are both in the same episode, they are both northern. I just don’t think the SWs would go down the Shula/Usha love rivalry road again. Now if something were to happen to Usha...

C8H10N4O2 · 29/03/2019 09:10

Now if something were to happen to Usha...

Oh gods yes - Shula would be first at the door with her wonderful casseroles and strokey hands performance Grin

Having read every post since mine I have come to the conclusion that this thread is by far the most intellectual, reasonable and interesting. The standard of writing is consistently good.

Is there an MN prize for best thread ?? There should be and we should win it!

birdsdestiny · 29/03/2019 09:35

Parishioners flirting with the vicar is very common from what I can see. If you position an ordinary human being as God's representative on earth you supply them with a power and authority that is attractive to some people.

thislido · 29/03/2019 10:05

Or the fact that they offer care and attention, birds.

BuckingFrolics · 29/03/2019 10:14

This thread rather justifies the "never talk about religion" dictum.

Natasha and Tom's row was well acted I thought. Somehow it will have to work out ok though, surely the SW won't be able to do a rapidly declining marriage and divorce?

But if they did then poss Tom will see the light re Kirsty and save her from the dull patch of magnolia that is Philip?

But mostly I'm posting to start a collective singalong familiar to football fans .., "Freddie's coming home, he's coming home, he's coming: Freddie's coming home ..."

ppeatfruit · 29/03/2019 10:24

I don't think so, talking about religion is good it's the fighting that isn't Bucking

I liked Tom's putting his foot down about the house. We never hear about the size of his income do we? Of course in a solid marriage, money and how it's spent is important! They should have a meeting!

Oh please don't make Ed's luck run out S.Ws I won't be happy.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 29/03/2019 10:29

So excited!

birdsdestiny · 29/03/2019 10:29

Indeed lido a fairly powerful combination and throw in the whole forbidden fruit idea and it is probably completely understandable. I knew I could find an excuse for Shula if I tried Grin

GabrielleNelson · 29/03/2019 10:44

Gosh, this thread's moving fast! I've been utterly mesmerised and aghast a bit distracted by Br this week. I wonder if the SWs thought Freddie's return would be a nice distraction from Br Day. Nice to come back and find posts from people who are even more overinfested than I am, and with considerably less erratic memories! Grin

I was horrified by Tom's unilateral decision to cancel the rental without discussing it with Natasha first. So highhanded! I'd find that unforgivable. I'm very risk averse and would be unable to sleep at night if we lived on credit to that extent, but I also believe strongly in making joint decisions jointly. OTOH, I'm also amazed that someone of nearly 40 would marry someone he knew so little about.

Three lions on my shirt
Is CallMeRuss still scheming?
I'm not living in a yurt
Of my own bed I'm dreaming

DadDadDad · 29/03/2019 11:08

Everyone seems to know the score,
They've heard it all from Bore,
They just know,
They're so sure,

That Lizzie's gonna throw it away,
Gonna blow it away,
Will Russ and her play
'Cause we re-mem-ber...

Roy inside a tent,
While Freddie was still dealing
Eight years since Nige went,
Now her pain's revealing

Fortunately I am agnostic where IT Operations are concerned

I have been in some heated discussions - Windows vs Unix, AIX vs Solaris vs HP-UX, Linux across the divide...

I'm also amazed that someone of nearly 40 would marry someone he knew so little about.

Maybe it's because he's almost 40. I am still struggling to find sympathy for him.

I wonder if the SWs thought Freddie's return would be a nice distraction from Br**Day.

No, that's what Nathan Whatsisname's 40th wedding anniversary party in the Bull Upstairs is about, surely?

DadDadDad · 29/03/2019 11:26

By the way, we're on track for our 100,000th post to happen in May. As it happens, @JessieMcJessie, your post this morning was the 98,000th.

DDD, Freddie wasn't dealing at Loxfest. He was ineptly buying from Wayne, who was also surpringly inept for an experienced dealer.

DadDadDad · 29/03/2019 12:50

Sorry, Hilda, I was more focussed on making it scan and rhyme than checking all my facts. Blush

He's not going to a yurt either. But sometimes you have to bend reality a little for the sake of a rhyme! It's called Artistic Licence.
CMR, being a piss artist, is an expert in this.Grin

thislido · 29/03/2019 12:57

He might prefer a yurt to what he’s coming home to. LL will be an adjustment after a prison cell.

R4 · 29/03/2019 13:05
