Well hasn’t it been a fun few years! Thank you all for supporting the threads and sharing in love and critique of The Archers.

GeorgetheBleeder I've just looked it up. Captain died in 1991 - 28 years!

PasteSandwiches · 06/03/2019 17:52

I'm mainly a lurker though I do post the odd comment. These threads have always been my favourite on Mumsnet and as no one I know admits to liking The Archers, they've become my outlet for all things Ambridge related. Name changed for the 100th thread (can someone remind me how to do the bull symbol)

PasteSandwiches · 06/03/2019 17:52

Name change appears to have failed

Dumdedumdedum · 06/03/2019 17:54

Archers = [ archers ] but without the spaces either end of the word.

PasteSandwiches · 06/03/2019 17:57

Neilsfavouritechilli · 06/03/2019 17:59

Sorry for this.

I'll go back to lurking

WhoEatsPopTarts · 06/03/2019 18:17

As it’s the 100th thread I thought I’d de lurk, I hope that’s ok. Could we have a brief rundown of the group terminology? Ie. What is a BOOP? Nicknames of characters etc.

I’ve been listening for about 25 years, but have a terrible memory so forget a lot. FWIW I think Kirsty and Brian have unresolved sexual chemistry and you know what Brian’s like!

GeorgeTheBleeder · 06/03/2019 18:22

I'll go back to lurking

Oh but you can't! Susan is depending on you ...

GabrielleNelson · 06/03/2019 18:28

Hello, WhoEats! BOOP stands for BitOutOfPractice, a longstanding MNer, who pointed out that these threads were often a bit negative and critical, so a BOOP point is when one of us grudgingly gives credit where credit is due.

Nicknames of characters: the only one I can remember off the top of my head is Radio Carter, who is Susan. Most of the rest are attempts at phonetic pronunciation of character names, e.g. Neyull, Emmur, Brine, Dayveed, Toebee. Grin

There was HWMNBN, i.e. He Who Must Not Be Named, who fortunately seems to have left Ambridge or died unnoticed in a ditch. Darrell. Vanessa Whitburn, ultra-long-serving Archers editor, made great use of him before she retired and it was a great relief when her replacement dispensed with his services almost at once.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 06/03/2019 18:31

BOOP (originally a BOOP Point) was devised by me actually in response to the poster BitOutOfPractice feeling that the thread was becoming overwhelmingly negative and uninviting. (This was years ago.) So it was suggested that posters might give a BOOP point for anything they found particularly praiseworthy in any episode.

Other than that, terminology is .. fluid. People make up character nicknames as we go along - some posters pick them up, others offer a Gallic shrug and move on.

GabrielleNelson · 06/03/2019 18:31

Salieri, your real name is George Thebleeder? That must be a conversation point! Grin

JazzerMcJazzer · 06/03/2019 18:34

JD is JennyDarling, because that is what Brine calls her. Rob was always Knob, though I think most went back to calling him Rob when he got properly sinisterFreddy and Lily are sometimes portmanteau’d to Frilly.

My favourite nickname was “The Baby Cheesus” for Henry but I guess he’s outgrown that now.

Is BOOP herself still on the boards?

birdsdestiny · 06/03/2019 18:35

I thought Tom's nickname was tosser but that might just be me.

I'd forgotten HWMNBN!

Oh - TASWAMA is pretty well established.

JazzerMcJazzer · 06/03/2019 18:39

Are you going to explain it George?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 06/03/2019 18:41

Thought I'd leave it to someone else. Bert maybe ...

GabrielleNelson · 06/03/2019 18:44

It's Bert's coinage. The Archers scriptwriters are misogynistic arseholes?

Pennina · 06/03/2019 19:05

Delurking!! I've been listening to the archers for 40 years!!

Who is currently at Blossom Hill cottage? That's the one that Usha owns and that Neeeeesha flighty vet rented. Maybe the Grundys could move there??

LillianandJustin · 06/03/2019 19:20

St Smugula is Shula for obvious reasons and Timotei is a recent addition for the sinister Tim Oatey. Ruth's mum (now deceased, but occasionally referred to on here) was Heatherpet (sometimes described as having thrown in the towel at Trowell after dropping dead at a service station on the way back from the North which those on here who like calculate such things determined most likely to be Trowell). Henwees little brother Jack is occasionally referred to as MySon (which is what his father Knob called him when he was not calling him Gideon).

Motoko · 06/03/2019 19:21

The trouble is Elizabeth, without the business, LL won't be your home for long.

Lee didn't seem to pick up on Emma's almost telling him about Rob, by saying "It's not my place to say anything". Perhaps she should have said there's something in her past that might have caused it. Not actually telling him what it is, but giving him a heads up. Maybe then he'd do some digging.
(Although I find it a stretch of the imagination, that by now, after Helen being so flaky, he still hasn't googled her.)

Salierithellama · 06/03/2019 19:22

GabrielleNelson no I am not GeorgeThe Bleeder, though I quite like the name and may consider a permanent change, although would that mean I would have to marry Auntie Cardboard ??

LillianandJustin · 06/03/2019 19:23

Aunty Cardboard = Christine

Motoko · 06/03/2019 19:30

Ah yes, going back to Natasha... she's doing what Anisha did when she was still new, getting the business to heavily invest. We all saw how well that went with Anisha flitting off to Newmarket and leaving Alistair in the lurch, at the same time as he was sorting out the financials in the divorce. I never liked Anisha either!

Come to think of it, none of the "strong, independent, successful" women, are very nice. Do the SW have an agenda?
