Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title (again - she has real gift for this!). Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other odd unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

(Change counting references arose specifically out of a nostalgic discussion on the previous thread, if anyone is intrigued.)

No, I was actually surprised to find out how old Molly Pipe was. One of the things I googled says she's 5' tall which perhaps means that her voice is a bit higher than average for an adult woman. I agree casting an adult here probably does imply a long-term role for Mia. Love interest for Ben or Ruairi in a few years?

Nic's DoD was 23.02.18 so the anniversary will be Saturday week.

thislldofornow · 11/02/2019 09:38

Caffeine on the page Quater linked to it says:

When Nic married Will in 2012 both Mia and Jake changed their surnames to Grundy and moved in to Greenwood Cottage. Since then Jake has moved back in with his father, Andrew, but Mia chose to stay in Ambridge with Will and Poppy.

So I suppose they just all wanted the same name and Andrew didn't object.

Madcats · 11/02/2019 09:42

I'm in danger of liking the new characters on the Archers!

I wonder who is going to be kicked into the long grass to make room for them?

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2019 09:57

Maybe Joe is near his end (he can't go on forever, sadly) and Leonard will, in his role of incomer, be able to frequently say, 'ah, you're xxxx xxx, and you live in that delightful 18th C cottage don't you?'

R4 · 11/02/2019 10:27

he can't go on forever, sadly
He doesn't have to go any time soon. Edward Kelsey is 9 years younger than Joe. As opposed to June Spencer, who is 5 years older than Peggy.

Oh my goodness! June is due her Telegram in four months time! What a trooper.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2019 10:35

June Spencer is amazing. Peggy is a great character too - not perfect, but generally kind and astute.

R4 · 11/02/2019 10:56

In my head Peggy/June is a ninety-something, so to find that she's nearly 100 has thrown me. I started drawing a small (work, not State) pension last year but June - who is 64% older than me, who has been of retirement age for as long as I have been of working - is still going!
Mind. Blown. As the yoof say.

I agree that Peggy is a good character; not a cardboard cut-out but fully 3D.

PrincessFiorimonde · 11/02/2019 12:07

On Mia and the theme park - I thought it was only when Will said he wasn't going that she said she wasn't interested? (Suggesting that she thinks if W's not there, she'll definitely be on full-time Poppy-wrangling duties at the theme park. Or that she wants to catch W by himself to talk about something (school?).) But perhaps I misheard that bit.

QuaterMiss · 11/02/2019 12:59

I had the impression Mia wasn't prepared to leave Will moping alone so close to the anniversary. (But it's early days. Wonder if she'll be around as long as Peggy.)

PrincessFiorimonde · 11/02/2019 13:38

Ah, Quater, you're probably right.

MrsArthurShappey · 11/02/2019 13:50

Adam-actor has the strangest intonation doesn't he? He EMphaSISes all the wrong syllables.

MikeUniformMike · 11/02/2019 14:03

I No tis Pip doingita Lot, especially when she is with Toe B.

MrsArthurShappey · 11/02/2019 14:05

Ugh yes!

Cromercrab · 11/02/2019 14:28

You're right re. Adam's speech - and he's getting worse. Pip's always been awful (well, this Pip - can't remember previous one).

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/02/2019 14:30

Oh my goodness! I was Shock at that clumsy final line on Friday! Whoever wrote that wants taking out and shooting Grin

And why cast Paul Copley as Jill's new squeeze? He has one of the most recogniseable voices on radio! He turns up in everything!

As much as I like him, I don't think he's right for the part. But maybe I'm wrong - time will tell...

It annoyed me that Kenton, Jolene and Elizabeth shielded Jill from what was actually going on.

I know they probably had the best-intentioned of motives, and that Leonard (a comparative stranger) was present, but, still, it felt like they were treating her like a doddery old lady who wouldn't be able to cope with knowing her daughter was in distress.

Elderly ladies are a lot more resilient than people give them credit for. And pretty much unshockable!! They've seen it all Wink

thislldofornow · 11/02/2019 14:35

They've seen it all I think that comes through really well with Peggy sometimes - I get the impression of wisdom accumulated over a lifetime.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/02/2019 14:37

I think they'd have behaved quite differently if it had just been Jill visiting.

And has anyone given Jolene a BOOP yet for her combination of warmth, tact and persistence in dealing with Lizzie? Kenton seems to be doing a decent job of being supportive too now.

Fink · 11/02/2019 15:10

I wondered whether they were hinting that Mia was developing a crush on Will. She's clearly taken over from her mother running the household, although Will himself doesn't seem to have noticed, much less anyone else. But I wondered if it might be more than that. I could be wrong, maybe it's just the unrecognised young carer thing they're doing.

Panicatthebistro · 11/02/2019 16:07

I was wondering that Fink or an even worse storyline (which will get me switching off for good if it happens - is a few years down the line they become a "couple")

cheminotte · 11/02/2019 18:06

I really don’t think they’d be that crass.

QuaterMiss · 11/02/2019 19:17

BOOP for whoever first suggested the Ruairi option!

(Though nothing's happened yet ...)

echt · 11/02/2019 20:26

I loved Brine's throaty, doom-laden voice as he announced the return of Kate, rather as if a Ringwraith was about to land.

She's going to yap, isn't she? Like, in the words of, I think, Clive James, like a toy poodle caught in a revolving door ( paraphrase) :o

Arpafeelie · 11/02/2019 20:48

Will asked Mia "How would you like to take your little sister to a theme park?" It didn't sound like a fun day out for Mia, it sounded as though Will was asking her to spend the day looking after Poppy.

DadDadDad · 11/02/2019 21:06

like a toy poodle caught in a revolving door

never a good idea to put all your barks in one exit.
