Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

Adam. Chris Carter might be a candidate for the life class drawing. Not Joe Grundy please.

Why not? It could rival Lucien Freud's 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping'

JoeGrundyIsMyR0leModel · 19/01/2019 12:45

home.clara.net/brianp/quickref.html

I'm afraid clara.net has the slug wrong. It's a unit of mass not weight.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2019 13:52

I imagine Joe to be not fat, but in pee stained longjohns.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2019 13:57

I imagine Joe to be not fat, but in pee stained longjohns.

Wiry and leathery. The longjohns should be ok now that the downstairs loo is his private domain, but he'd not be wearing those for his life class. And we know he does bathe, from the bathroom flooding incident not so long ago.
Seriously, a study of one of his hands might be interesting, I'd have thought?

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/01/2019 14:40

Yes, Joe isn't fat. He's been active all his life, and not of a generation to be overweight. I see him as a more upright and nicer natured Albert Steptoe.

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2019 14:41

Active! He's been on the sick most of his life.

TheSilveryPussycat · 19/01/2019 14:51

No he hasn't! He farmed Grange Farm, not all that well (it was supposed to contrast with Brookfied's good farming). He and young Eddie always had some money making idea that went wrong, for comedic effect Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 19/01/2019 14:54

Are we talking about the same Joe Grundy?

glamorousgrandmother · 19/01/2019 15:18

He always pretended to be sick (Farmer's Lung) for sympathy but he's always worked. I don't think any of the Grundy's have claimed benefit even when they should have done.

BertrandRussell · 19/01/2019 15:20

Joe’s worked all his life! Not very effectively sometimes- but he’a always worked.

SaturdayNext · 19/01/2019 16:16

After all those beers Joe's cadged, to say nothing of all that cider, he's definitely got a beer belly.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2019 16:41

Is he still looking after Bartleby, and that other pony (forgotten her name), and driving the trap around? I'm pretty sure he walks a lot too, merely as a normal form of transport.

QuaterMiss · 19/01/2019 16:51

Other than when he's in the bath I doubt Joe spends even an hour inside on any given day. He likes being out with Bartleby. (Yes, what has become of him?) Or just communing with nature.

Let's not forget Meadow Rise ...

TheSilveryPussycat · 19/01/2019 17:49

Does anyone remember Mary Pound (I think that was her name), who farmed on land adjoining Grange Farm? And do we know when Joe was widowed, he used to talk wistfully of "my Susan)?

QuaterMiss · 19/01/2019 18:23

Googling Mary Pound I found that she was played by Ysanne Churchman - who was Grace Archer also!

And also this lovely synopsis from 1976:

genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/8d3ee034b61d45a68ec7ec4afd4f2bc6

I don't remember her at all, but at that stage I'd only have been listening during school holidays.

Joe was widowed in ... Nope, can't find - but OMG just look what I did find!

(I know there are other chronologies lurking about the Internet - always nice to find another.)

Hornets · 19/01/2019 18:35

MrsArthurShappey

"your thoughts on Pip will tell us if you are one of us....."

Hmm

I thought this Archers thread was going to be different to the ones I've been on elsewhere but here we go again with the 'you've got to think the same way as us to be in our gang'.

Shame because the OP stated "All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed".

Well that didn't last long did it? I'm not a Pip-hater, so the message I'm getting is that I'm not welcome here.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2019 18:51

I'm pretty sure the 'squints at...' in that post was indicative of humorous intent.

QuaterMiss · 19/01/2019 18:57

Hornets - far be it from me to speak for other posters, but I'm pretty sure that was a joke! Grin

Anyway, the newly discovered chronology says Kathy was born on Jan 30 1953. She'll be 66 in a few days! Did I miss her retirement party? Or is she going to have to manage GG for ever??

R4 · 19/01/2019 19:13

Don't be huffy hornets. No hive-mind here. (see what I did there? Grin*)

Fab links Quater. Dan Archer and Eddie Grundy are both played by Harrisons - were they related?
That chronology is brilliant. It's now in my bookmarks!

*yeah, I know I'm mixing up my hymenoptera but that's how I roll.

birdsdestiny · 19/01/2019 19:38

I am fairly sure it was a joke. I like Shula and they still talk to me Grin

cheminotte · 19/01/2019 19:46

And I think Ruth is a good mum and my posts don’t always get ignored!
I did wonder what had happened to Chris with his ‘don’t talk to my wife like that!’ bluster.

ChakiraChakra · 19/01/2019 20:00

I like pip 😁

TheSilveryPussycat · 19/01/2019 20:38

Ooh that chronology was in Umra wiki, which I didn't know existed. Umra dates from the time of Usenet, and was short for the forum name: uk.media.radio.archers, and the posters, of whom I was one, called ourselves umrats. As on here, discussion would veer into interesting by-ways, and as the threads were fully threaded, one post could lead in different directions simultaneously.

FiveShelties · 19/01/2019 21:47

Hornets - to be honest you are lucky your posts have been commented on. Grin

Hornets · 19/01/2019 21:54

OK so can you tell me what my thoughts on Pip should be so I can join your gang? (Because I don't want to get it wrong and embarrass myself).
