Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't use google for this and I am old. In fact I lie I know one person who wouldn't and they didn't google because that would have confirmed to them what they already suspected. Dh ran a football club, we know some parents looked him up.

DadDadDad · 11/01/2019 10:13

Yes, I'm all in favour of a good walk with great views myself and see the romantic potential.

I guess you are right that the SWs were aiming for the gently humour of someone trying to prove they are spontaneous by putting something in the diary for two weeks' time. Also showing the gap between wanting to say "hey, I'm the kind of person who will try something new" and being lukewarm when given an actual suggestion. Both things I can identify with, so the humour partly comes from recognising myself in those reactions.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2019 10:36

Would you necessarily google someone with a fairly common combination of names if you had no prior reason to suppose they had much of an online presence (other than business-related). Helen isn't an FB addict, the one time Lee saw her online she was eyeing up dairy cows.Grin Lee has no reason whatever at the moment to suspect anything other than a messy divorce, and one of the specific questions raised (Henry's parentage) would not be visible at all.

I just googled myself - I have an unusual name, I think I may be unique within the U.K., and found (apart from some Americans) only links to my publications and 192.com with my address, my husband's name (not my daughter) and an indication I'm 50-54 which is mildly amusing having just turned 58.

Fink · 11/01/2019 11:04

ppeatfruit I'm Tom Archer's age. I do work and have school aged dc, and I would struggle to be spontaneous in my dating life, if I had one, but, crucially, I don't hold up spontaneity as a virtue and claim to be exercising in when I making perfectly reasonable advance plans to meet friends. Maybe others are right and they, or the SWs, were being humorous.

I didn't think it boded well for the relationship that Helen liked neither of Lee's ideas and also more or less said that his book reecommendation (probably the next Dan Brown) hadn't been great, Lee didn't like Helen's suggestion and then found the idea of 'a country walk' a novelty. It doesn't sound like they have a lot in common.

I'm going to repeat my assertion from a while ago that I find it perfectly believable they haven't googled each others' names; it's a thing some people do, it's by no means universal.

birdsdestiny · 11/01/2019 11:08

But she knows a lot about Lee. His name, and his career, she presumably knows the area he lives in. I sound like a stalker now. We googled the names of football coaches when ds changed teams, rejected one team because of the online presence of the coach ( highly racist stuff)

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2019 12:49

I am pretty close to Jenny’s age- and I would certainly google a new man I was interested in.

MikeUniformMike · 11/01/2019 13:09

Helen was married when she was in the headlines.
Lee knows her as Henry's mum and might not have guessed that she had a different surname to Henry at one point.

Bittermints · 11/01/2019 13:28

There is a Gary Horrobin too, IIRC.

Questions were asked in Parliament when Susan was jailed. Shock

You're right, mike - the reports at the time would have referred to her as Helen Titchener. Good.

glamorousgrandmother · 11/01/2019 13:48

I've just Googled myself and, it appears I am a moderately well known artist (I'm not). There was nothing about the real me although tbf I have never been up in court for stabbing anyone.

SaturdayNext · 11/01/2019 13:59

My name is mildly unusual. On googling myself it was page 3 of the results before I came across any reference to me. That put me in my place. Sad

Fink · 11/01/2019 14:43

I stand by my comment that not everybody would google somebody's name at the start of a relationship. We're getting plenty of anecdotal evidence that some people would, which we already knew. But not everyone does and it is by no means stretching credibility to think that neither Lee nor Helen have.

QuaterMiss · 11/01/2019 15:46

The Titchener/Archer argument is persuasive. Grin Though I'm wondering if the papers wouldn't have attempted a 'née' ...

MikeUniformMike · 11/01/2019 15:53

I don't think they normally do that for married people.
Helen is not an unusual name so he might know about Rob but not linked her to the newspaper headines. He might not have lived in the local area at the time.

Fink · 11/01/2019 17:47

Lee doesn't strike me as an avid reader of local newspapers, cf. his surprise at a country walk in a largely rural county. He clearly doesn't know where he actually lives let alone what's going on there! Grin

OfficerDiaz · 11/01/2019 17:52

I'm 54 and I'd google someone I was thinking of going out with. Why would you not?

MikeUniformMike · 11/01/2019 17:58

I wonder if Lily googled Russ Jones?

OfficerDiaz · 11/01/2019 18:00

I should add I'm happily married.

OfficerDiaz · 11/01/2019 18:02

Poor Lily.

birdsdestiny · 11/01/2019 18:32

They could find that out if they googled you officer Grin

OfficerDiaz · 11/01/2019 18:38

Grin birdsdestiny you've got me banged to rights.

newtlover · 11/01/2019 19:11

oooh, Brian was nasty there

SarfE4sticated · 11/01/2019 19:29

I really miss Lowfield it was really useful way to catch up without having to actually listen! I only listen Mon-Friday so often miss out on important episodes :(

newtlover · 11/01/2019 19:35

haha, he got his comeuppance at the end of the episode though!

QuaterMiss · 11/01/2019 19:53

🔮

Brian suffers a fatal heart attack brought on by his legal troubles. Jenny and Ruairi will carry on cosily in the little house.

(Strong feeling of deja vu - this may well be the third time I've made this prediction.)
