Thanks to witchmountain for the last thread and to dadx3 for Godfathering them! Also to any other posters whose ideas I have borrowed for the title.

Abbie was visiting Roy at Halloween
This isn't a good thing. This is the scriptwriters thinking, in a panic, that they have a Roy/Lexi storyline coming up so they had better shoehorn in a reference to Abbie. It's part of the general malaise of having little bits of sub-plot that are thrown into the spotlight for a few weeks then discarded. Remember all the fuss about Nic's children? - we haven't heard a squeak about them in months! What about Pip, Pup and Toby, how's that working out? - again silence.

DadDadDad · 30/11/2018 10:19

@TheEfficientBaxter - I don't think you should comment on poster's grammar or spelling unless you genuinely can't discern their intended meaning.

In any case, while "her" coordinated with another noun as subject is not grammatical in formal standard English, I think it's perfectly idiomatic in colloquial English and really doesn't register as "wrong" in the context of an internet forum. (If I saw it in a newspaper article, it would be more jarring).

Pedants' Corner is the place to rant discuss these matters.

ppeatfruit · 30/11/2018 10:25

R4 To be fair, the SWs can't mention ALL the families and their doings every day or even week; Will did say that he was on his way to collect his children when he talked to Brian recently.

it would be worse if there were dramatic events going on in each of them. One can only take so much Hmm.

Jessie, I like Jazzer's accent (even though it is not thought 100% authentic, by some listeners, for a displaced Scot in Borsetshire) and the way his character has developed from the ketamine addled scrote he once was to the cheeky but supportive friend /housemate he is now. The actor who plays him is excellent.

More Jazzer and less Pip please BBC!

ChampooPapi · 30/11/2018 11:23

More Jazzer and less Pip please BBC!

Agreed! I was just thinking 'if Jazzer was in every episode would I begin to find him annoying?'

I honestly think I probably wouldn't even if he popped up at the most inappropriate or unlikely moments!

Jazzer and Helen getting together would be my favourite thing, and obviously the most unlikely Grin

Miscible · 30/11/2018 11:43

You're not seriously complaining about that, are you, R4? I'd be delighted if Pip joined Kathy in total silence for at least 20 years.

TheEfficientBaxter · 30/11/2018 11:45

Fair enough, DDD, and apologies to witchmountain, if I caused offence. None was intended.

But it's still very jarring wherever it appears - to me, anyway.

R4 · 30/11/2018 12:34

Nobody is missing Pip.Grin
But newborn, after having been the totally adored Second Coming, has pretty much disappeared. As has her dad. And uncle. We've had plenty of Brookfield action but precious little mention, even in passing, of them.
It's unnatural and jarring.

Cromercrab · 30/11/2018 12:34

I recently saw a young man wearing a great t-shirt with the legend, "I'm silently correcting your grammar.' (Looks off innocently into middle distance). I've both studied and taught languages over the years. I've also worked as a writer and editor, and prepared people for presentations and interviews. All of these are circumstances where correcting grammar is appropriate. This may be a rather English view of the world though - in France, total strangers will cheerfully correct you.

I did quite enjoy the 'sticking up for statistics' posts though, since I learnt something by reading them; so perhaps my line on unsolicited corrections is inconsistent?

ppeatfruit · 30/11/2018 12:44

R4 You didn't read my title did you ? Rosie's in the cereal cupboard, after popping out to stir the Xmas pudding last Sunday!!! She's obviously very co ordinated for a 5 month old Grin

R4 Rosie was in the Stur Up Sunday episode- Jill was talking to her and telling Ben about it being her first one. Pip silently collected her before Jill sneakily fed the dog.

Panic I like Jazzer’s accent too, as I said in the post I’m happy to go with it despite it’s excessive Glaswegian-ness! It is a million times better than many terrible attempts I have heard by English actors trying to “talk Scottish”. I was just answering the poster who asked if it was authentic.

I am not sure whether Ryan Kelly was cast first and so Jazzer became a Scottish character to fit his accent, or whether the character was written as Scottish and a suitable actor cast.

JessieMcJessie · 30/11/2018 12:51

Cross post ppeat!

ppeatfruit · 30/11/2018 13:02

Grin Jessie It was interesting to have to imagine Pip holding Rosie with the wooden spoon and helping her to flick the mixture all over the kitchen Grin.

I must say I do find it hard to understand Jazzer's accent sometimes;. it's super to have a distinctive voice but not at the expense of good comprehension Grin

R4 · 30/11/2018 13:05

Rosie was in the Stir Up Sunday episode
I know. That's why I qualified the "disappeared" with a pretty much.
It all seems so unnatural. You don't hear from someone for ages, then they pop up and therefore you know that they will be in it a lot for the next six weeks.
I don't like that the mechanics of programme-making show through so obviously; it spoils my suspension-of-disbelief.

DadDadDad · 30/11/2018 13:51

Cromer - correcting each other on this thread is all part of the fun, isn't it? We put up our thoughts whether on statistics or TA, and others come along to challenge them.

The distinction I would make is that it's not necessary to correct the written English posters employ to express those thoughts - my standard is to imagine this is a spoken conversation (so misspellings are invisible) - you wouldn't generally comment on someone's syntax when having a friendly discussion.

The obvious exception is if you keep spelling Lynda's name incorrectly, then you can expect someone to point it out. I'm hoping we can be more lenient in the spelling of Ruaririiiri. Grin

Panicwiththebisto · 30/11/2018 14:26

Jessie I like to think that the part was written for Ryan Kelly.

Minimammoth · 30/11/2018 14:56

I enjoyed Justin and Brian talking about their concern over chest hair exposure. Grin

TheEfficientBaxter · 30/11/2018 16:56

I really do think that Jazzer is an innocent where Hannah is concerned.

I know he's had a colourful past, but Hannah seems to belong to an entirely new generation of women that I bet he hasn't encountered before.

He doesn't know what he's getting into, and I sincerely hope they didn't have a ONS last night.

She nasty - and dangerous.

witchmountain · 30/11/2018 16:59

Don’t worry Baxter, only one of us is looking foolish after your little outburst.

TheEfficientBaxter · 30/11/2018 17:48

And I've an 'orrible feeling it's me, witchmountain.

Is everyone laughing at me?

TheEfficientBaxter · 30/11/2018 18:03

I knew it was a bad idea to imagine I was good enough to join in with this Archers forum.

I think I'd better sign out.

You are all far too knowledgeable and erudite for an uncomplicated, unworldly soul like me to compete with.

Bad idea - bad bad bad..... ☹

ResponsibleMushroomForager · 30/11/2018 18:12

.

grumiosmum · 30/11/2018 18:29

Now now play nice everyone please.

This is the Archers Forum where we are all polite & courteous to one another.

You can take your petty squabbles elsewhere on MN.

TeenTimesTwo · 30/11/2018 18:45

So back to the plot. Hmm

What has Kenton been up to? Haven't heard from him in a while.
Will Fallon produce a child to be love interest for Rosie in 20 years time?
What will Shula do at Christmas?
What happened to Jack Woolley's daughter owning the village shop?

And more importantly, when will my DD be able to do homework independently enough for me to listen to a whole omnibus again?

(Especially when she has revision)

chemenger · 30/11/2018 18:59

At Christmas Shula will go to LL for a lovely family meal with Elizabeth, Lily and Russ at which Lily will finally come to her senses and give Russ his marching orders, after she finds her painting packed in his suitcase. (Possibly Alastair has to be summoned to get rid of Russ and Shula falls back in love with him. This is not requited). As he storms out the phone rings, it is Freddie, with the news that for some complicated and unrealistic reason he will be home for New Year. Elizabeth is so overcome that she suffers heart failure and is confined to bed/hospitalised. Lily takes over the running of LL permanently, Freddie moves in with Shula to allow Lily to get the LL licence back, does night classes and goes off to study equine management.

I may have too much time on my hands.
