As Frilly stress Lizzy out, did the SWs forget her heart defect? Will there be long term llama drama karma in The Archers?

Have just re-listened to the beginning of yesterday’s. Wanted to establish exactly where in Manchester he was planning to live off Lily’s allowance. But he only seems to say “that is such a great area ...” So could be anywhere from the Northern Quarter to Didsbury. (I really want to know now!)

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2018 09:19

“And we thought he was after her for her money - it very much sounded like the other way round at the end there ”

Seriously? Expecting him to be able to contribute is “being after his money”?

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 09:40

And we thought he was after her for her money - it very much sounded like the other way round at the end there

Eh? Where are you getting that from?

wurzelburga · 08/09/2018 11:03

Has Lizzie guaranteed the rent for the whole academic year? Nobody rents to students without a guarantor or 12 months up front.

Russ is clearly banking on selling Lily’s painting to fund his life of leisure in Didsbury. My toes curled when he made the comment about “neither of us having done anything illegal” - classic grooming behaviour.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/09/2018 11:14

Has Lizzie guaranteed the rent for the whole academic year?

Probably not yet. I used to get the guarantor forms a week or more after the deposit was paid. Although at the point of applying for the flat, Russ was in work and they could have used his salary/job on the application.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 11:15

I was wondering about rent/guarantors/ whose name is on the lease.

Worst case scenario is they have an assured shorthold tenancy for 12 months (or more) in joint names; Lizzie has paid part of the rent upfront; Lily sees the light but Russ won't move out.

Is there a limit on how much rent can be taken upfront? In Scotland cannot be more than 6 months but I don't know about England.

Hopefully the lease is only in Lily's name.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/09/2018 11:20

Is there a limit on how much rent can be taken upfront?

Typically a month, maybe two although one of my kids did look at a tenancy asking for 6 months up front. I'm not sure there is an limit on what they can ask for.

The relevant parents all told them to fuck off and they reverted to one month. They were terrible landlords though which is presumably why they were after so much in advance

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 11:42

I wonder if she knows how hard it is to create a living income in the art world ( without teaching).hes not going to be in Damien Hirst realms is he

Off the top of my head I thought of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder and her late husband John Houston. They are 2 of Scotland's best known and successful artists- commercially and artistically. I knew they both taught for most of their careers. Google tells me she started teaching atEdinburgh College of Artand continued until her retirement in 1986. He taught for 35 years. So much for Russ' nonsense about teaching "caging his creativity"

BertrandRussell · 08/09/2018 11:59

People who are creative-create.

JessieMcJessie · 08/09/2018 12:06

I went back to check the Manchester area too (I lived in the Northern Quarter myself for a spell). But I think he just said “the flat’s in such a great area”.
His being attracted by the combo of a vegan restaurant and an artisan cheese shop was a bit contradictory I thought.

Do 3 speed kettles actually exist? My ads on this page are now showing blinking water taps Grin.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/09/2018 12:21

Do 3 speed kettles actually exist?

Different temperature kettles exist. I have one, but its no more fancy than a regular single temperature kettle.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 12:28

John Bellany is another major Scottish artist who also taught for much of his career.

DadDadDad · 08/09/2018 12:38

Jessie - you mean you didn't do what I did and Google such kettles? There appear to be done very swish ones out there for £70, although they tended to offer any temperature in a range rather than three discrete temperatures.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 12:39

Reviews of variable temperature kettles. The testers picked the George at Asda £22 one as the best.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 12:42

I only use loose leaf posh teas. Our current (one speed) kettle has lost its automatic switch off. As we need a new kettle I'm tempted to give the George at Asda one a go.

grumiosmum · 08/09/2018 12:43

I've got a variable temperature kettle.

I use the lower temperature for making herbal teas in the evening, like Russ Blush

Also more eco-friendly.

DadDadDad · 08/09/2018 12:59

Can I just have a little rant about this idea of creative people....

The presenter on Front Row last night said
something like "it's said most people have at least some creative ability in them". I wanted to shout at the radio! I think she meant artistic skill, because all humans are creative, it's an inherent part of our intelligence.

Creativity is finding a way to make something out of the resources and constraints you are given. Primitive humans thrived because they worked out want to do with flint and wood and food sources that could run faster than they could.Grin

When I develop a new spreadsheet or write a financial report at work, a lot of creativity is required to plan, structure and communicate complex systems. It's just not artistic (apart from choosing the cell colours of course). I think I've convinced my musician wife that maths is just as creative as music.

And being a teacher requires plenty of creativity...

TeenTimesTwo · 08/09/2018 13:02

I don't get this 'ruining Freddie's life' bit really. Even if he does go to prison, he has a job for life owning and running Lower Loxley. So he is never going to be unemployed or homeless.

I think Lily fell for a sophisticated older man who could take her out and show her off. When she realises she is with a weak useless spendthrift she'll have the sense to get rid.

I don't understand how Tom could go to the Nuffield meeting having been told the farm is too diversified, with no overall vision, and then come back with a plan for even more diversification . It makes no sense at all.

KitchenFloor · 08/09/2018 13:10

I live in Manchester in the student area. Massively overinvested in the shops they're talking about. Didsbury has the cheese shop but no vegan tea shop I'm aware of, but there is one in Withington, although not quite a proper tea shop.

And any worthwhile flat in these areas would have been snapped up months ago. From personal experience. Usually 12m lease 1.5m deposit, student specific properties 9m lease and not sure on deposit, usually parent guarantor.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 13:20

I think Lily fell for a sophisticated older man

Except he isn't sophisticated; quite the opposite. Everything he says just screams how gauche he is. If he were sophisticated would not:

have made that ridiculous faff about what to wear, bringing the "wrong" wine (or the shop bought cheesecake);

have said that cringe-making crap about his disgusting food keeping his insides in good order;

said that toe-curling thing about being "not too shabby";

said all that guff about the area being full of artistic types and vegan cafes and artisan cheese shops.

The question is- has he always been such a try too hard , cringe-making embarrassment?

QuaterMiss · 08/09/2018 13:26

Yes ... But I doubt they’re in one of the studenty areas. It’ll be somewhere prohibitively expensive. (What’s the new word for Yuppie?)

And thank you ( Hmm ) for the kettles link LassWiADelicateAir. Few years ago I lusted after one on the John Lewis site - but persuaded myself against. And my supermarket cheap kettle has worked beautifully ever since. But, oh my Lord - have you seen the red of that Kitchen Aid model?

Oh. Yeah ...

birdsdestiny · 08/09/2018 13:26

I have to listen again to the episode where Russ is ignoring the calls from the colege, dc were being inconsiderately noisy. But did he say the allegation was about him and lily, could there be another allegation ?

TeenTimesTwo · 08/09/2018 13:31

Sorry my mistake. Lily fell for someone she thought was a sophisticated older man.

It is only now that she is seeing him 'in the real world' that (hopefully) the scales will start to fall from her eyes.

LassWiADelicateAir · 08/09/2018 13:33

oh my Lord - have you seen the red of that Kitchen Aid model?

wasn't it lovely?

The George at Asda one is now £30 and I have ordered it to collect in store on Tuesday.

QuaterMiss · 08/09/2018 13:40

Smart move. Shouldn’t think there’ll be any left by close of business today. (Sometimes, on S&B, when people want helping towards the perfect item ... I cover my eyes, turn the page and refuse to give away my secret store of websites. Blush This is why!)
