Ambridge is in the doldrums. When will Pip pop? Does anybody even care? And Anisha’s off, leaving Rex in the (pig) trough? Discuss the Archers here.

Sorry about the title, nothing particularly inspiring in the storylines currently Sad

No spoilers please, there’s a thread for that.

Whether it starts with a J or a G, what an utterly dreadful name! Grin

I wonder what Toby's mother is called. Too much to hope they will call her Regina in a nod to Rex's rather odd name.

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:15

It's awful. I think Rex is ok as a name but it's more a name I'd give a dog.
Please let the horrible Pip and Minipip die in childbirth.

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:15

Maybe Minipip could live. She won't need a mother she has Jill.

Minimammoth · 19/07/2018 16:14

Jillipa it is then. Well Shula was pretty much made up so it’s a tradition.

C8H10N4O2 · 19/07/2018 16:32

New babies in Ambridge seem to be assigned names either from immediate family or from the top ten popular within the family's assigned social class.

So Jenny's last baby was Alice whilst Sharon's was Kylie. Helen has Jack and Henry whilst Emma had Kiera.

By which logic Goldensqueak will be Jill/Doris/Philippa or Amelia/Olivia if female. Deavid/Philip or Oliver/Noah if male. None of Ruth's children had names from her family.

Perhaps Mr Stats can confirm this one way or another? GrinGrin

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 17:05

Isn’t pip named after phil tho?

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 17:06

As in, it’s short for phillippa?

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 17:09

Duh, must read thread before replying

I would not be like mega gobsmacked if goldenpip was named after aunty elizabeth tbh, she was very nice to pip when she fucked up with the cows/got duffed etc wasn’t she

Ellie/eliza/libby are all fairly popular still among naice middle class folk such as the derpys

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 17:09

Oh shit sorry i swore on the thread i forgot sorry

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 17:10

Oh god i did it again SORRY

just put me in a wicker man and burn me on lakey hill

Gruach · 19/07/2018 17:45

GrinGrinGrin

Can’t be Doris - we already have a new Dan & Dot. Would be a bit clumsy now. (Though a cool name.)

Do like the thought of an Elizabeth derivative.

Oh shit sorry i swore on the thread i forgot sorry - but Pip is so [insert swear word of choice] annoying! is my early bid for next thread title.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 17:55

Yes, Elizabeth is my favourite girls' name so I'd vote for that, but it would have to be a short form from the word go to avoid confusion. Beth, maybe?

I'm now quite invested in the idea of a Solomon Archer.

Top ten names for each sex in the early part of this year (England and Wales):

Noah
Liam
Benjamin - out for obvious reasons
Oliver - too confusing because of Oliver Sterling
William - no because of Will Grundy
James - possible because James Bellamy is rarely mentioned and Jim Lloyd is always Jim
Elijah
Lucas
Mason
Michael - also possible as Mike Tucker is barely mentioned now (but Eddie was seeing him for a drink yesterday, I was pleased to hear)

Olivia
Emma - no, because of Emma Grundy
Ava
Charlotte
Mia - no, because of Nic's daughter Mia
Sophia
Isabella
Harper
Amelia
Evelyn

A wide field possible!

Gruach · 19/07/2018 18:03

Oooh - Sophia. Ruth would love that ...

Isabella Archer might be interesting if SOC were still around ...

But what’s actually happening about the infant’s surname?

LillianGish · 19/07/2018 18:36

Oh Noah! I forgot about Noah - it has to be Noah for Granny Ruth.

JessieMcJessie · 19/07/2018 18:37

Sorry being thick why would Isabella be interesting?

R4 · 19/07/2018 18:42

it has to be Noah for Granny Ruth.
arf

Are they still running the suggestion box at The Bull.

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 18:43

Oooooah Noooooah!!

If they call spawn of pip Noah i think we can take it as a nod to the fandom 😁

There will be a ‘comical’ tug of war over the surname. Jill will do several SIOBs and possibly bang an item of crockery down on the table. Then they’ll go double barrelled.

Bibesia · 19/07/2018 18:45

If it's a girl, Heatherpet has got to be in there somewhere - maybe as a second name.

MissVanjie · 19/07/2018 18:45

....aaaaand didn’t chrissyfur mention Noah as his pick for his as yet not conceived child the other day? That will lead to him going ‘but i wanted to call our baby noah’, alice will say ‘what baby you maniac’ then they’ll have a whole conversation about having babies, alice will be like no way, and there’ll be Ructions

choccyp1g · 19/07/2018 19:27

That was the most boring episode ever.

THe only exciting thing was that it RAINED in Borsetshire. Well actually it sounded as though it rained on Brookfield, but not Bridge Farm

choccyp1g · 19/07/2018 19:28

Or was it Home Farm that got the rain?

Gruach · 19/07/2018 19:37

Isabel Archer Jessie.

(Just seems like the kind of connection he would have liked.)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 20:11

Can't believe I failed to spot the possibilities in Noah Archer! Grin

I wish I'd ever managed to read beyond the first page or two of anything by Henry James. But I haven't.

Rain in Borsetshire during a prolonged heatwave, with drought declared in a nearby area. Contented sigh. I live for these moments.

Gruach · 19/07/2018 20:30

Henry James is the whole meaning of life. (But you do have to be in the right frame of mind. To my mind The Golden Bowl is, well, the greatest thing ever - but I tried re-reading it recently and had to put it down after a few paragraphs.)

Noah is GrinGrinGrin

Minimammoth · 19/07/2018 20:55

Of course she might go all modern with Apple, Spud, or even use a place name, Am-ber, Lakie, or Moo
