Am i the only one listening to Homefront?

I download the whole lot at the beginning of the week and binge listen whilst walking the dogs. Just listened to the extra programme they put out today and, unusually for me, i found it so touching and sad.

Anyone else?

This week's episodes were quite sad I thought.

Tightlippedmama · 07/08/2018 11:47

I’ve just realised that this current, Devon series finishes on Friday ( and I’ve binge listened up until then already)

I am bereft once more.

I think that there’s only one more series to go, as we head for November.

A number of storylines have been neatened. Perhaps we could have a natter about them, after Friday? I only know of one other person IRL who is a regular listener and even then I’m not entirely certain it’s an ironic listen on his part.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 07/08/2018 14:23

Yes it would be good to discuss! I don't know a single other real life listener.

Tightlippedmama · 07/08/2018 16:45

Ooh good!
I’m not ashamed to admit to being moved to tears by the Gidleys’ response to the news of Rupert’s death.
I like the Ivan and Primrose storyline and Emily Colville’s ‘situation’.

dimples76 · 10/08/2018 17:21

I had a little cry during the last episode of this series - I'm going to miss it.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 10/08/2018 18:01

Is everyone caught up to today?

Tightlippedmama · 10/08/2018 18:40

I have.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 10/08/2018 18:46

I was so glad things worked out for Isabel and Charles in the end. A bit of a shame that we won't be hearing any more from most of the Devon characters now I assume: there was at least an allusion to the idea that Emily Colville and Mr Walsh might get together. I suppose real life wouldn't tie up every single story!

dimples76 · 10/08/2018 21:03

I agree - I was very glad how it turned out. I also liked her cousin talking about what a toe rag Jonny Marshall was.

Do you know when it's back on again?

Wonder how Kitty is going to react to Victor's request!

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 10/08/2018 21:17

The website says it is back on 24 September.

Yes I'm not sure Kitty will be as delighted as Victor thinks about his living plans!

Tightlippedmama · 10/08/2018 23:05

And Primrose and Ivan? Doubt that’ll be an easy one.

My DD was being sweepingly dismissive of Homefront today.
‘God! Is she still bonking that German?’
I wasn’t really sure where to start, as there have been so many many storylines since August 1914, when she had ‘bonked the German’ ( not exactly a 1914 way of putting it)

MrsArthurShappey · 11/08/2018 10:05

Kitty bonked the German on at least one other occasion since 1914, what with baby May and all. I loved the wedding scene, I knew that was Isobel’s game when she volunteered to be the jilter 😊

Tightlippedmama · 11/08/2018 11:32

Indeed, although we weren’t party to the conception of baby May were we? I like how things happen ‘off mic’.

I too loved that last episode. Well done Mrs Shappey ( have you seen John Finnamore live? My DH and I thought we were quite well up on our Cabin Pressure etc references, but Lor, we’d stumbled on a cult!) for guessing Isabel’s ruse.

Did low key rural war time weddings
Have a band, with a singer and dancing? For us to be given a final snap shot, it worked well, but I just wondered.

I thought Daniel, Victor and the broad beans was done well ( for a 12 noon broadcast during the summer holidays ‘when children could be listening’ )

I expect to get reports of Devonian happenings, when we’re returned to Folkestone for the final tranch of episodes.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 11/08/2018 14:29

I also wondered about this - it seemed very elaborate for a last minute event! And the singing seemed very...modern somehow. More modern than 1918 anyway.

Tightlippedmama · 11/08/2018 15:31

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06g3nhy

To see the actress that plays Rose Fairweather ( and Hannah in ‘The Archers’) singing and playing the ukulele, accompanied by ‘Howard Argent’ on the piano and ‘Susie’ (who’s Susie? But she’s Tracy Horrobin in TA too) on the trombone.

The song was published in 1913 and originally sung by Al Jolson.

The rendition felt somehow 30s to me.

Right, now to research 2918 wedding receptions.... yes, I’m sad and yes, I am waiting for a seriously delayed flight!

MrsArthurShappey · 11/08/2018 16:34

Oh I loved that! I see what you mean though, quite 30s ish. And I knew I had heard Rose Fairweather’s voice somewhere - narky Hannah!! Thank you 😆

I have never seen John Finnamore live, though I would love to!

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 11/08/2018 18:35

We went to see John Finnemore on his tour a couple of months ago. Loved it!

I've just remembered poor Adeline. I hope there is some kind of proper happy ending for her after all. I thought it was terribly sad when she said "au revoir" to Silas and he said "no, this is goodbye" Sad

Raglansleeve · 15/08/2018 17:59

DH and I binge listen on long car journeys - Homefront always reminds me of either the M6 or the A1!

Favourite characters - Adeline, Alice and Esme Macknade - we're rooting for Esme and Oscar and the hat shop. I find Dorothea Winwood very believable, a bit trapped by her time and station. I hope Jessie Moore has a happy future, same for Edie and Fraser Chadwick.

And we hate Johnny and Cressida and are not very fond of Juliet, and I really hope the Reeds are stabbed to death by 1,000 toy soliders, bayonets at the ready.

elkiedee · 15/08/2018 22:31

I've really enjoyed Home Front but I never get to hear all of each series and I have a terrible memory for what happened in stories and I wish there was somewhere I could look everything up.

I do like Kitty and Adeline, sad about Dieter. I like Marion and I was really interested by the factory, strike and women's football stories.

I want to know more about the consciencious objector family.

GreenShadow · 15/08/2018 22:53

Glad I found this thread.

I too am dreading the end of the final season in the autumn. I've lived with Kitty and co for so long, it will be hard to say goodbye and not find out any more about their lives and loves.

Bet the BBC will be inundated with fans asking for it to come back.

Tightlippedmama · 16/08/2018 08:26

We should probably lead the Inundation then, GreenShadow. As I said upthread, I only know one other listener IRL. Maybe we’ll have to wait until 2039-45 for ‘Homefront II’?

Peter will join up, with middle aged Kitty worrying about him fighting his own relatives. Baby ‘Howard’ will join the RAF, and get into scrapes. Baby May will join the ATS and/or get involved with a black GI. Or end up as a Land Girl, back on Elspeth’s farm, meeting Bonnie ( back from SOE work behind enemy lines) and wonder why they look so alike.

almondsareforevermore · 20/08/2018 20:14

I loathe this soap opera with today’s issues and language set a hundred years ago. I turn it off then forget to turn the radio back on and miss half of You and Yours.
Does anyone know why Radio 4 has so many 15 minute slots? Does the BBC think all the listeners are 75, with a15 minute concentration span?

mammmamia · 02/09/2018 16:13

Just wanted to come back to this thread to recommend a book for those missing Home front until its return in September.
I’ve just read The dust that falls from dreams by Louis de bernieres.

It covers some of the same themes as home front. Even covers the Tontine Street bombing.

It’s not his best writing tbh but I enjoyed it and the descriptions of the trenches is very moving.

Tightlippedmama · 25/09/2018 00:25

It’s returned. And there’s a 7 minute intro on the Listen Again bit, with a very intriguing plot development flagged up. There’s to be one final programme, set on November 10th 1919, on the eve of the first Armistice, where we’ll get an idea of where the characters are going. That’s where the intriguing plot development must be set.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 25/09/2018 17:53

I'm slightly miffed because they used to put all the episodes for the week on iplayer on a Monday and it looks like they aren't doing that any more!
