Enjoy!

OP posts:
Gallavich · 11/05/2017 09:03

I've googled the Pip actor and I've seen her in something else where she appeared to have a modicum of acting talent and didn't sound weird. She's from Worcestershire, anyone know what the local accent sounds like? Is she trying to put on a borsetshire accent (whatever that is) and needs better voice coaching?

R4 · 11/05/2017 09:16

I don't think there is much of a Worcestershire accent, we just sound fairly neutral. It's sort of RP with the occasional twinge of Brummie or wurzel, depending on which end of the county you come from.

CeciledeVolanges · 11/05/2017 09:22

Really?! Sorry about the double post but I had a little shudder of distaste whenever I heard them talking about "spending the day in bed" or anything similarly suggestive.

TheAntiBoop · 11/05/2017 09:47

She's obviously more of a screen actor. She's awful on the radio

I'm not buying Toby as the clingy love sick puppy dog

Ceto · 11/05/2017 09:48

The problem with Daisy Badger isn't the accent, it's the voice. She seems to think she has to keep deepening it randomly. I find it more nauseous when she's talking about anything to do with sex and uses that slightly giggly undertone.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/05/2017 09:54

debska Grin

Was that the first ever mention of ED on TA? It caused me to raise an eyebrow slightly.

echt · 11/05/2017 09:55

I need brain bleach after having the thought of Tobee's shrivelled cock put there. Bleurgh.

Also, lazy glipe getting a takeaway.

R4 · 11/05/2017 10:40

There was a piece on Front Row last night about young actors and their diction. Basically they said that, in ye good old days, young actors used to tour in Rep and learn their trade the hard way. Now they come straight out of drama school and concentrate too much on visual acting for their close-up and forget about voice acting. Hence all the incomprehensible mumbling in Jamaica Inn, SSGB, etc.
It doesn't really explain Ms Badger's inability to act in her own native accent.Hmm She's been doing this for about 2.5 years - if she doesn't crack it soon then she's never going to do it.

TheAntiBoop · 11/05/2017 10:43

She obviously has something on someone senior at the BBC because they really need to recast

Yes pip is an unlike able character but the poor acting compounds it.

Toby and Rex weren't great to start with but they have improved at least

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2017 10:47

It also doesn't explain why the directors don't TELL the actors to stop mumbling, improve their voice levels etc.

I know that when one listens, as opposed to watches, the voices are far more noticeable , hence the posters on here going on about poor Henry's voice.

EBearhug · 11/05/2017 10:52

Yes and the increased use of mics means they don't have to make as much effort to project their voices to the back of the theatre and so on.

Gallavich · 11/05/2017 10:53

Why did they recast Pip a few years ago? I wasn't listening regularly then but I liked the actor in raised by wolves.

EBearhug · 11/05/2017 10:56

Actors move on, get other jobs.

C8H10N4O2 · 11/05/2017 10:57

But we have already had Pips shoddy behaviour juxtaposed (twice) against Josh making a mistake, taking ownership, apologising and making amends For which the SW reward him by turfing him out of his room to make way for Pip

It feels to me like a retread of the previous generation - Kenton was 'feckless' and whatever he did was somehow a bit of a joke and never quite worked. David was 'future of Brookfield' and whatever he did was glossed over and excused.

I've assumed for a long time now that Josh was destined to be the new Kenton with Ben in the background waiting for a personality.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/05/2017 11:03

In the case of Pip and Tom, the parts appeared to be recast because Sean O'Connor thought actors who had been to drama school were preferable to actors who had come up through youth theatre groups. Old Tom actor was very vocal on this point. Don't know what old Pip thought.

LeninaCrowne · 11/05/2017 11:15

I preferred the old Tom and old Pip acting, (although I always thought that old Tom sounded like one of the Numberjacks on Cbeebees).

Arf at Ben waiting for a personality - after all he was the unplanned baby.

Jill could move into Lower Loxley for a sabbatical from the flapjack/lemon drizzle production so that poor Ben could keep his room.

TheAntiBoop · 11/05/2017 11:20

It's amazing that after trawling all the drama schools they ended up with a troughton for Tom.

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2017 11:24

Sorry psuedo I've come late to this thread . Thanks for it Grin.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/05/2017 11:36

A really astonishing coincidence, Antiboop! Open auditions, lots of actors seen, and the one who gets the part is the son of the recently cast replacement Tony. Hmm

Oddly enough, the actress who plays Miranda is married to Simon Williams (Justin). Also entirely coincidental, I'm sure.

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2017 11:40

Ebear Thank goodness they are not "Projecting" their voices on radio! Like Sir John Gielguid etc. the more intimate sound SHOULD work very well on TA.

EBearhug · 11/05/2017 12:56

Thank goodness they are not "Projecting" their voices on radio!

No, I didn't mean they should do it, but that if they had been taught to (as they would have through necessity a generation or two ago), - I would assume it strengthens the voice up well, and that in itself means there's probably more variety in tone and volume available.

Although I do realise as I type that I've bog all idea of what is taught in drama schools these days and my historical knowledge is based mostly on mid 20th century children's fiction, which may not be an entirely accurate source...

EBearhug · 11/05/2017 13:03

Also I appear to have used punctuation marks a bit freely in that last post. And I don't think I can blame it on the phone this time.

AuldHeathen · 11/05/2017 13:05

Marking place. Great thread title. We've just had 10 days or so of no interweb. I've had a fair few 'I wonder what MN makes of this' moments while listening to TA. It's good to be back.

AuldHeathen · 11/05/2017 13:49

2 thoughts about poor Bill. It was actually the withdrawal of 'treats' by Peggoi that resulted in hypoglycaemia, and so ended in the old mob being too sluggish to get out of the way of the car. Smile And why did they need to choose a burial place for Bill? Wouldn't they just dig the hole near Ben? A family crypt.

Yes, last night's SL was a bit of a flop. Grin I think I'll give the repeat a miss today, despite being home now.

EBearhug · 11/05/2017 13:50

And why did they need to choose a burial place for Bill? Wouldn't they just dig the hole near Ben? A family crypt.

Well, quite. We had a pet graveyard at the end of the garden.
