Dare I say I quite like Toby?
I hear 'young, spoilt, silly, lots of growing-up to do' but nice enough. He strikes me as something of a Labrador puppy-type; energetic, easily distracted, yet eager to please, just not really house-trained yet. I think he's generally sincere and quite straightforward. He knows when he's obfuscating, isn't proud of it, or very good at it. 'Charming' in a salesman-like way, so sometimes persuasive but not a natural manipulator.
I know there was all that joking with Rex early on about marrying Pip for her inheritance but that's when he just saw her as a potential conquest. His feelings changed when they got together - he was the one who wanted to make it an exclusive relationship. Yes, maybe just a (not unusual) jealous, possessive streak but not in a controlling way, I thought. And yes, totally agree about her 'playing house / playing wife' while he's more than content to live in the present.
As he matures, Toby will either become a decent if occasionally unreliable bloke, a bit like Kenton, or his selfishness will and willingness to see people as commodities will solidify and he'll become a pompous ass and a real user - but, back to the puppy, I think his need for affection is too real.
I still wonder whether, following something like the former path and staying with Pip as long-suffering (insufferably whinging) wife, he's being set up as the next Brian Aldridge.
Remember how the SW admitted that, when Rob first turned up, they had him in mind as the 'next Brian'? Well, I can see a version of grown-up, successful Toby, developing into that role and do wonder if that is part of the point of the Fairbrethren.
