Sorry for the poor title - the end of the last thread has arrived sooner than I thought and I haven't had the benefit of hearing all of the last 2 nights....

It is a weird name for a pony, even more so if we are meant to believe that Joe chose it, since I don't think the book is read that much in the UK. I never came across it till I was at university.
Apparently Melville invented the name.

Maybe in TA it's meant as a reference to being stubborn, or being in the yoke/harness, a bit of a cog in a machine? Or maybe it's just a name...

Piebald? Grin

Vango · 19/10/2016 16:54

Definitely piebald!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/10/2016 16:56

Ah, that was an imposter, it turns out I was exactly right!

I think seeing that picture of Bartleby (nice glossy veguely Fell-type black in my imagination) is worse than seeing photos of the human characters. Nothing will be the same again.

And yes, I agree with (way back thread) the disbelief at Joe trotting Bartleby up.

Toomuchtea I agree Grin

BertrandRussell · 19/10/2016 18:27

I hate trotting a pony up- I am very short and even the little ones are faster than me.......

Toomuchtea · 19/10/2016 18:28

It's like that thing with the Jill books - my copies spanned the generations, and so Black Boy was black in some and piebald in others. Blew my infant brain.

(If you were not a pony book fan, the Jill books were a series of nine books by Ruby Ferguson, and are considered right up there in the pony book world. The pony morphed into a piebald as the books were reprinted).

BertrandRussell · 19/10/2016 18:31

Rapide is such a rubbish name for a pony...........

2rebecca · 19/10/2016 18:33

re ppeatfruit Jill always sounds quavery though. She always sounds overanxious and fussy.

Molecule · 19/10/2016 18:37

Bartleby is a slightly shaggy bay, I'm sure of it. Jo would have no problem trotting him up as he's so fit he's still able to manage a bath, something my very fit 91 year old mother will not contemplate, as getting out is so difficult.

I think the SW have no idea about the realities of great age.

SunnySomer · 19/10/2016 18:46

Maybe old age is different for different people? My 95 year old next door neighbour was just telling me that she'd invested in a mop as her daughter thought she'd find it easier than washing the kitchen floor on her hands and knees. I'd be surprised if she couldn't get out of a bath.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/10/2016 18:53

Bartelby the Scrivener is a wonderful read, unlike Moby Dick.

Do any archivists know when Bartleby first appeared and who named him ?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/10/2016 19:01

I think it would be jolly unsporting to kill of two pets in one year and leave Rob alive

Quote of the thread.

Oh and who weighs pasta? It just sort of looks right in the pan.

selsigfach · 19/10/2016 19:05

Is that a ropey looking Kirsty in the morning...?

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/10/2016 19:07

Yep. Upduffed for sure.

Stickerrocks · 19/10/2016 19:08

She's definitely sounding a bit rough.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 19/10/2016 19:11

Yes and 'ooh babies, aren't they alien' type stuff too. I do hope we're wrong ...

Stickerrocks · 19/10/2016 19:14

Sometimes Lillian does come up trumps.

Vango · 19/10/2016 19:17

Oh my goodness, I LOVE Lillian. Though quite why she doesn't have more to say to Justin about his recent appointment is a mystery to me.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 19/10/2016 19:23

Shula addressing Oliver as 'Master' made me momentarily think they were in the world's most middle class S&M club.

AnnieNoMouse · 19/10/2016 20:01

Kirsty is definitely pregnant - I'm impressed at the listeners who predicted that a few weeks ago.

CheesyWeez · 19/10/2016 20:08

That was a good episode, I enjoyed Helen being helped by Lilian to throw out the dress that was... "mauve, would you call it?" And I have always liked Kirsty - and Roy, smiling "try not to look like you're at the dentist's" made me laugh out loud.
All this while I was weighing out 60g of dry pasta per person (which becomes 100g cooked) as that is a Weight Watcher's portion. We were having it with a pork chop and some peas.

AnnieNoMouse · 19/10/2016 20:13

I weigh pasta, 100 grammes dried per person, except when there are 5 of us and the whole packet goes in.
