Sorry for the poor title - the end of the last thread has arrived sooner than I thought and I haven't had the benefit of hearing all of the last 2 nights....

Won't be much room at Rickyard when Toby's wife and children arrive seeking a roof ...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/10/2016 19:30

This is going to be tricky for David. Neither Pip nor Jill can do any wrong in his eyes. Who's he going to back? Ruth will probably go with Pip.

Pip is a pain in the butt, but for Jill to deny Pip a piece of cake when earlier she gave an entire pie and god knows what else to Shula is a bit off.

Interesting comments on Edinburgh vernacular. I can't help wondering if 'fell for my Elsie' relates to Elsie Inglis (popular Edinburgh mat unit that shut some time in the 1980s). Never heard most of these - and I worked with pregnant women in Edinburgh. The only other specifically sex- related expression from Embra (weegie word for Scotland's capital!) I can think of is 'getting off at Haymarket'. I once said these words to my husband, on a train as it left H'market. as in 'I thought we were getting off at haymarket' - and noticed the man-child opposite us sniggering. Grin Blush

Anyway, back to TA - Jill does sound a tad paranoid - though she aint wrong about Toby. But, yes, about time somebody told Pip what's what. My thoughts on Toby was - he's a bit like Rob complaining when his little woman has made him a meal. I can't decide if it's realistic or not.

I can't believe Toby has a wife and child in Brighton. Rex would have loved telling them all - maybe an ex and child though, possibly triplets?Smile Or the head of the Brighton mafia having something over him?

Vango · 18/10/2016 19:40

Odd episode. Didn't recognise Alistair initially.

Re. Pip and Jill. I'm all for Jill being in charge of dictating who can and who can't come to her party but my word, what a peculiar conversation. As an aside, I have never in my life heard anyone speak the way Pip does. I can see the script in her hand every time we hear from her. Almost as if she's reading the lines for the first time and doesn't know where the emphases should be. Awful.

TopazRocks · 18/10/2016 19:41

I seem to recall a list of expressions like 'getting off at Haymarket' from other places, mostly in England. Possibly a thread on MN. I wish i could remember them.

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 19:51

Pip is really badly acted

Maybe be Jill will move in with Liz

Ruth and David will quickly side with her when the dirty washing starts to pile up!!

I really feel for Jill - I get the impression she feels isolated and lonely and with no one she can really talk to. I think it can be hard for people that age who aren't seen as a person as their spouse would see them but as a carer (mother/grandmother etc). My grandad was bitterly lonely after my gran died despite having family around

Pip is a pain in the butt, but for Jill to deny Pip a piece of cake when earlier she gave an entire pie and god knows what else to Shula is a bit off.

When she gave the food to Shula, I wondered if it was a form of PA after the birthday row. Cooking for Shula rather than David and Ruth.
I thought Pip mentioning Phil was reprehensible, though BOOP for Jill for being unfazed.

TopazRocks · 18/10/2016 20:05

Gumpendorf, not sure PA but certainly wanting someone to be grateful. And Shula was, I think. Mentioning Phil wasn't so bad - BUT Pip was kind of scoffing at her GM (for being upset about Grace and so on) and that was horrid. I don't think Pip should consider counselling as a career if farming doesn't work out.

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 20:05

I think pip and Toby are related....

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 20:07

Oh sorry, I forgot soc had left

ZuleikaDobson · 18/10/2016 20:16

Pip is so thick. She must surely be perfectly capable of working out why Rex is pissed off with Toby, and her willingness to close her eyes to all the selfish, lazy and stupid things Toby does is ridiculous. She should also have worked out that Jill wouldn't be that keen on feeding Toby.

JessieMcJessie · 18/10/2016 20:37

Regarding the Nativity, (can't scroll back on phone to namecheck the poster who said they recalled Bartleby being involved) it is Shula's donkey which is used for the Church but I think it's actually Palm Sunday that he does. The donkey does have a name and is referred to by it on occasion. Bartleby is not religious as far as I know Wink, though I think he may have taken Kirsty to church for her ill- fated wedding.

2rebecca · 18/10/2016 20:51

I think casually ambling in to your mum's house and nicking some cakes without asking is very bad behaviour unless you are a child and Jill was right to pull her up on it. She is just learning to be independent though, but I'm sure would object it other family members came to her cottage and just nicked her cakes (I think Jill should set this up as a dare for Josh just to prove her point!). 80g of pasta/ person is pathetic. We have 4oz each (30g:1oz) or 5 if feeling really hungry.

2rebecca · 18/10/2016 20:56

Is there some other ancient Fairbrother story that hasn't yet been explained that Jill will later admit to eg molested as a child by some relative of Grace?
I started listening long after Grace pegged it so don't know much about that era.

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 21:21

Pip is 23, not 15!

Minimammoth · 18/10/2016 21:33

Agree re Pips acting, it's all up and down, and Toe Bee.

ZuleikaDobson · 18/10/2016 21:45

How likely is it that Pip has never cooked pasta before?

Imbroglio · 18/10/2016 21:46

Accusing Jill of jealousy was very low.

Jill and Phil were always incredibly hands on and supportive grandparents to Pip - Phil supported her to play the piano (weren't they thinking of a music scholarship at one point?), and I remember Jill getting her some Pekin chickens.

She is massively spoiled and indulged by her parents.

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 22:00

And here is the problem

Pip is such a horrible character and so badly acted that all that scene got was a shrug and a 'well she deserved that'

Not sure that's what was intended

Maybe this will lead to a sl about the emotions of the elderly as they age. I think elderly people's feelings tend to be dismissed but it must be quite scary to be felt left behind

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2016 22:05

80g of pasta per person would be enough in our house but we're fairly sedentary and two of us are petite. It might be a suggested serving size on a packet. Not enough for strapping farming types though (Eddie attested yesterday to the fairbrethren being big lads).

Glad it doesn't sound as though Bartleby is for the knackers yet.

TheAntiBoop · 18/10/2016 22:08

It depends what you eat it with surely? If it's served with hearings of bolognese it would be enough but if served with a sprinkling of cheese and a side salad it would be tight
