Sorry for the poor title - the end of the last thread has arrived sooner than I thought and I haven't had the benefit of hearing all of the last 2 nights....

NotAMammy just plunge on in. It's been going for more than 50 years so few listeners have been listening right from the start. I'm happy to fill you in on a bit of background if you like?

Vango · 17/10/2016 19:36

I think it is NotAMammy, but better. Ambridge exists only in your imagination which is what I love most. But I'm a massive fan of radio drama anyway. We all had to start somewhere so dive in - in no time you'll be listening twice a day and again on Sunday mornings 😁.

This BBC character list should help Not.

Not yet caught up on the thread since last night, but I need to ask - can someone remind me of the story of Bartleby? When and how did he become Joe's?

Also remembered today that a few months ago Eddie Mair used the expression 'XYZ stays in wherever' on PM, when he meant 'lived'. He said this several times in the same piece. I was really surprised as he tends to use very standard English though he clearly is Scottish. However he's been 'down south' for years. I was so surprised I had to check with the resident pedant that it is in fact Scottish usage. He confirmed it is.

Also on particularly Scottish usage - and bear with me, this does relate to TA!! - what about the expression 'fell pregnant' - I used to think of it as Scottish, even more specifically Edinburgh. But it was used during Helen A's trial by the very RP-accented QC for the prosecution. Does it get used in some parts of England in that context?

In Edinburgh 'falling pg' tends to be abbreviated to 'falling'. It can be very confusing for people from other parts of Scotland. I moved to E in my early 20s -stayed almost 20 yrs and had the weans there. Grin My then GP was very Edinburgh, and during a conversation about contraception he said 'Would it be a problem if you fell just now?'. For a few long seconds I had no clue what he was talking about, thinking why's he wondering about me stumbling. Confused Anyway, back to the thread.Smile

TheAntiBoop · 17/10/2016 20:09

I'm a southerner and 'fell pregnant' is very much in use although I would say considered old fashioned. Almost like no one wants to think about how people actually get pregnant!

TopazRocks · 17/10/2016 20:14

I'm another who likes Ed's voice. I also don't feel THAT annoyed that he and Emma shagged when she was still with Will. Even Will has forgiven them, eventually. I think of it as Emma being encouraged away from Ed - after the accident that almost cost her her her leg, especially. And Will was regarded as the steady (for 'steady' read 'boring') one and older, and i suppose there wasn't a huge choice of men in Ambridge then. Susan was especially pushy about Will, I recall. All a bit of a mess, with several people making mistakes, and Emma was very young.

TopazRocks · 17/10/2016 20:17

BUT, Anti, is it something a QC would say in court? I noticed some discussion of that point on ML, but don't recall a conclusion. I do think it's the falling with no 'pregnant' which is the Edinburgh term.

TheAntiBoop · 17/10/2016 20:39

Yes agree that without the word pregnant attached it is not one I have heard. I should imagine a qc would use it as it is deemed polite!

I felt really sorry for will in the whole debacle and hated the way everyone expected him to just suck it up because they as listeners preferred Emma with ed. if she had had an affair with a Toby or a rob people would view it very differently

Kind of mirrors real life I suppose in that people are willing to turn a blind eye of the situation suits them

CeciledeVolanges · 17/10/2016 20:55

Was either of them a QC?!

TopazRocks · 17/10/2016 21:04

Cecile, I think i got that wrong. I am very tired and often get things/words muddled which is Smile Sad and Blush.

TopazRocks · 17/10/2016 21:06

Actually only they 2nd two are right - I am sure it's entertaining for others.Grin

TopazRocks · 17/10/2016 21:06

the, not they. grr.

glowfrog · 17/10/2016 21:25

delurks

I also can't believe how polite Ed was to Rob, and that Rob wasn't barred from The Bull!!

drspouse · 17/10/2016 21:28

I think Kenton and Jolene are banning by stealth to avoid him suing.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2016 21:42

NotAMammy - in addition to this thread, if you look under the Radio Addicts topic theres one called something like 'Help - where do I start with The Archers', which Iirc has some background info.

Of dear. Poor old Bartleby. And poor old Joe. Sad

ErrolTheDragon · 17/10/2016 21:44

Just thought, maybe they can sell the mangle for an unfeasibly large sum to pay for Bartleby's vet fees?

5OBalesofHay · 17/10/2016 21:54

I think Battle by has only one use for the vet Sad

TheAntiBoop · 17/10/2016 22:20

Dog food?

Imbroglio · 17/10/2016 22:24

Any clued up horsey people who guess at what's wrong with Bartleby?

BertrandRussell · 17/10/2016 22:29

Worst case- tendon damage?

Shallishanti · 17/10/2016 22:34

yeah- and what are hocks? or was it fetlocks? Confused

Imbroglio · 17/10/2016 22:43

hock.

I was thinking arthritis?

BertrandRussell · 17/10/2016 22:44

Hocks are sort of back leg ankles.
