Hopefully we can go back to an ordinary tale of country folk?

Spoilers are frowned upon.... There's a thread for that.

Ah, cromwell, but whereas the existence and positioning of a woman's underwear is her own choice, as befits a free spirit like Lil, a 'bike' is merely an object to be used.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/09/2016 09:54

feel obliged to defend the author of the quoted email from LikeDylanInTheMovies' nasty comments

Apologies, if I came across as a bit snitty, it wasn't meant as such. It's a stage most of us go through post-PhD and that alphabet soup brought a wry chuckle of recognition.

I did similar in the imediate post PhD afterglow, partially as a defence mechanism and partially to assert that I was a 'proper' academic now.

I was told to stop the overkill and to use them sparingly and strategically as

a) everyone working in academia has got them, they're the entry criteria to the proffession.

b)If it is appropriate to use your qualifications it devalues to drown them in an alphabet soup of society memberships.

C)The requirements for Fellowships of learn Societies vary hugely: some are more prestigious and massively more difficult than others and those in the know will be aware of the criteria.

As I say, likely to

BertrandRussell · 23/09/2016 10:00

Oh god, not "cat's bum face" accusations. It was funny once- but it's time has most definitely passed. Did you consider "pearl clutching"?

If you think describing Lillian as a "bike" is in the spirit of the thread, i think you may have misinterpreted.

Putthetulipsthere · 23/09/2016 10:02

Many thanks for new thread title Pseudo, how nice not to need Hel/Rob SL in it 😀

R4 · 23/09/2016 10:07

It's a stage most of us go through post-PhD and that alphabet soup brought a wry chuckle of recognition.

In this age of hype and self-promotion is it now considered acceptable? Her Linked-In profile gives more detail on the alphabet soup. It also mentions the Academic Archers conference.Smile

Fiderer · 23/09/2016 10:08

I did smile at "spiced plum chutney".

Been a while but am easily amused.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/09/2016 10:23

I'm not on LinkedIn, but what year was the PhD awarded? 2016? 2015? Pound to a penny within a year or so the list will be slimmed down probably to BA,MA, PhD. It's a process of getting comfortable with your own identity.

I'd say organising an Academic conference is a big deal: a logistical and budgetary nightmare and has a place on a CV.

ibrowze · 23/09/2016 10:28

Perhaps Jill has been stoned for years. Would explain her getting stuck on lemon drizzle and having a permanent beatific expression (in my imagination)

Unless the grass was contaminated

BitOutOfPractice · 23/09/2016 10:28

LikeDylan I wonder if you notice the irony of accusing someone of "willy waving" and then coming out with a phrase like "It's a stage most of us go through post-PhD" Grin

Your studied ennui is hilarious!

and yes, "bike" is a horrible misogynistic term

Swannykazoo · 23/09/2016 10:36

Hello you two....
Shameless placemarking as I''ve got an omnibus to listen to yet.
Thanks for new thread Pseudo

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/09/2016 10:43

No it wasn't studied ennui or humblebragging at all.

I wanted to make it clear that it wasn't a case of devaluing academic achievement or 'let's all chuck shitty sticks at women in academia' or someone snearing from the outside. It was to demonstrate that I'd 'been there, done that' in terms of thickening out my credentials and wasn't judging her too harshly (after I came off as sneery and dismissive in the first post) and was to add context to my comment.

Cromwell1536 · 23/09/2016 10:44

Except I'm not misogynist, or critical of older women with prodigious sexual appetites (I won't see 50 again, and my appetite is undiminished, so would be rather odd piece of self-loathing). I think we have exhausted the topic now.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/09/2016 10:46

I think we are all very well aware that you've 'been there, done that' now Grin

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/09/2016 10:55

Shrugs. Believe it or not, I don't get my kicks bragging in front of anonymous strangers in the internet despite what you think.

I've explained the context of comments twice now and you can take them or leave them, I'm not really that arsed.

TheAntiBoop · 23/09/2016 10:58

I think sometimes academics forget that non academics really don't care! By all means use the letters professionally and in context (I have a few of my own that only people in my industry care about) but more than that is unnecessary (yes I am looking at you mum in dd's class who lists her letters at every possible opportunity!)

Agree with pp who said David behaves totally differently with pip and josh and it's quite distasteful

ibrowze · 23/09/2016 11:00

Brew and Cake time Smile

PrincessFiorimonde · 23/09/2016 11:01

Thanks for the new thread, Pseudo.

I just wanted to muddy the 'three counties' discussion further by adding that there used to be a Three Counties Aero Club based at Blackbushe airport. Reference was to Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire... (But graciously concede the agricultural ref. to Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire!)

Archers conference sounds great; wish I lived nearer.

Scarydinosaurs · 23/09/2016 11:04

Oh that conference really excites my inner geek. It sounds brilliant!

Peggy was wrong about Lillian not having a more personal relationship with Justin- but does this mean JennyDarling will turn those detective skills towards finding Stephan to sabotage Rob's career?

mummytime · 23/09/2016 11:09

I'm already planning how I break it to my family that I'm leaving them for a few days at an Archer's conference.... I hope a real field is involved, I'd love to pull on my boots again.

ibrowze · 23/09/2016 11:10

Hey guys I was enjoying these threads as such a high standard of debate even if 'only' The Archers. It's so easy to misinterpret each other's nuanced comments when only typed out. Let's be kind and give each other the benefit of the doubt. (Channelling JacquiSmile). Ms Hari Ibrowze BAA OX PHUD MPHIL&JILL BOING TIM4 BED ZBDEE

In my professional world, we have Fellows of the Institute of Actuaries, so you see people with these letters after their name: MA FIA. Grin

Thanks to ibrowze for being the voice of Archers

EBearhug · 23/09/2016 11:29

There's the Three Counties Nursery in Bridport, too, which I assume covers Dorset, Devon and Somerset.

CeciledeVolanges · 23/09/2016 11:32

I was writing something to the same effect but ibrowze appears to be more qualified than I.
