Hopefully we can go back to an ordinary tale of country folk?

Spoilers are frowned upon.... There's a thread for that.

Isn't Carenza Lewis at Lincoln? I suspect that has quite a bit to do with its choice.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/09/2016 00:22

Who claimed Lincolnshire as a location for the Archers consider this.

It was first broadcast on the Home services regional programme for the Midlands before it went national - why would they set it far outside the midlands?

Birmingham is the nearest big city and characters talk about going up to Birmingham.

A number of characters support Aston Villa (Roy and possibly the Archer boys)

A large number of characters moving from the urban West Midlands (Usha, Vicky and Hayley)

As far as I know Borsetahire is located between Warwickshire and Worcester (which in reality obviously border each other) and is most closely modelled on the latter in terms of its makeup and characteristics.

JudyCoolibar · 23/09/2016 02:00

How nice to have the Flower and Produce Show in the thread title. The world is back on its axis.

DoctorTwo · 23/09/2016 04:57

Thanks for the new thread Pseudo. A silent character winning the Freda Fry prize would be deliciously appropriate.

ErrolTheDragon
Blimey. 'Are all educated older women permanently stoned'

Quite. I can only think of one and have never thought of Kate as being particularly educated. Perhaps for Americans 'stoned' means a Midlands accent?

I rather resent Borsetshire being relocated to the other side of the country by outsiders. Perhaps I'll write a sequel to Huckleberry Finn set in Brooklyn. I have just found out there is an Ambridge in Pennsylvania. A real one - or is it?!!

We can prove the location is nowhere near Lincolnshire by how close Pat is to her native Wales / locals to Brum airport / aren't some of residents Welsh chapel ?

ibrowze · 23/09/2016 05:51

Sorry I meant Methodist

Gruach · 23/09/2016 06:44

The people running the Archers conference are English, not American. Listeners not "outsiders". All easily searchable on the internet.

I and a few others found the inaugural conference both stimulating and fun - so I thought people might like to know that a second is being planned.

Hmm ...

As a longstanding lurker, and occasional contributor to this continuing thread, I feel obliged to defend the author of the quoted email from LikeDylanInTheMovies' nasty comments. Putting aside the three degrees she has earned, several of those acronyms dismissed so derisively are for learned societies for which you need a nomination from your peers that entails recognition of the quality of an academic's scholarship, and not just payment of a membership fee. It's hard enough being a female academic these days, without having one's credentials picked over in this way on a public forum.

Apologies for the derail. I too enjoyed the change counting as well as the purse-zipping-up sound effects.

OhTheRoses · 23/09/2016 07:05

Marks place.

Yes, bike is a hideous expression and not accurate in Lilian's case. However, I don't imagine Peggy approves of Lilian's propensity to get involved with men who are not obvious husband material:

  1. Scott, much younger - in the end went off with Brenda, didn't he? Hence Lilian's loathing of Brenda when she worked for Amside.
  2. Matt - married at the time they first got together; Lilian conspired with him to hide assets from his wife
  3. Paul - Matt's brother (not that Peggy knew about that one); affair commenced while Matt was in prison
  4. Justin - married, Peggy doesn't yet know
Minimammoth · 23/09/2016 07:27

On another note entirely, did the CA mention 'hairdresser' yesterday? Are we to have a new venue for gossip and a new hairdresser character.

Gherkinsmummy · 23/09/2016 08:01

Marking place - thanks for the new thread. David learning about mushrooms is interesting. But it's mycelium (not mycellum as he pronounced it) and wouldn't Jill have wanted to know what it was?

Imbroglio · 23/09/2016 08:07

I'm hoping that at some stage Ruth and David stumble across Ben who has escaped from the attic having fashioned a skeleton key out of the inner workings of his playstation or growing his hair long enough to abseil down from the roof.

If you Google "three counties" then the first reference is for the Three Counties Showground. Wiki says "The Three Counties of England are traditionally the three agrarian counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire ... The expression is sometimes used for other groups of three counties, such as in BBC Three Counties Radio which refers to Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, or in Rugby Union where it may refer to Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire."

So we are the original and best and other counties are trying to steal our catchy triumvirate title.

I don't know if Cara was being serious or tongue-in-cheek with her list of credentials but she and he co-chairs were great fun at the first conference, and I'm looking forward to the next one. Thanks for posting the e-mail Gruach.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2016 08:25

Olivia - do your alleged 3 counties have a Royal Three Counties show - which is obviously the most important criterion in the world of the Archers. Grin Wiki also concurs. I'm afraid yours is just a wannabe trio.

Re the hairdresser, Fabrice has lurked offstage for a while - thats where Helen was supposed to be taking Peggy on the day of the Otto incident.

As to the stoned educated older women - not Kate who obviously wouldn't consider herself in that group (despite the grey hair) . I think that suggestion is casting suspicions on Carol but more obviously Jaqui - but given her lucidity stoned is not her normal state.

Vango · 23/09/2016 08:28

Who's Jaqui?? Confused

CeciledeVolanges · 23/09/2016 09:05

Gruach thank you thank you thank you! I recently attended my first conference and it was two of the best days of my life! Do you think I could submit a paper? Does anyone? Might have to go for a short walk until I calm down enough to do my job...

ibrowze · 23/09/2016 09:29

gruach conference sounds great fun and I will consider coming along. Didn't mean to undermine it, I was just being overly protective and I shouldn't use term outsiders when they are listeners. Why did I think they are from US anyway?

Who is Jacqui?!

birdsdestiny · 23/09/2016 09:32

Aren't they talking about Carol, wasn't there a whole storyline about dodgy teas, or am I getting confused.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/09/2016 09:36

Jaqui was the elderly academic juror, who made a passing reference to her calming brownies iirc. I wish she'd move to Ambridge!

Vango · 23/09/2016 09:39

Ah! Yes 😁, of course!

birdsdestiny · 23/09/2016 09:39

Errol has it. Now I have thought about it, it's the female juror who turned the entire verdict round in thirty seconds. Perhaps she slipped something in their tea.

Cromwell1536 · 23/09/2016 09:42

Snorfle. Simply entering into the spirit of the thread which includes posts which cast doubt on whether Lillian wears knickers, and the (most hilarious thing I've read outside an India Knight novel in a while) assertion that she only does so to keep her ankles warm. No need to get all cat's bum face about it (and yes, I say bum or arse rather than the prissy, middle-class 'bottom', but then I am quite posh).

Vango · 23/09/2016 09:43

Birds Don't forget the jury deliberated for much longer than 2 hours and we only heard 45 minutes! I like to think the SWs spared us from having to re-live our own conclusions over the last few months. 😉
