Hopefully we can go back to an ordinary tale of country folk?

Spoilers are frowned upon.... There's a thread for that.

Yes, exactly. Much worse than the f off!

I do hope jazzer isn't heading toward a GBH charge.

OhTheRoses · 02/10/2016 11:53

I bet whoever gave Henry first prize didn't know Rob made the crown. In a small community you can bet Henry got first prize because the show organisers knew he'd had a rough time.

The importance Rob is attaching to this indicates he's the one with mh problems. Rob's whole back story will probably emerge in snippets over the next five years.

I bet there'll be problems with his next lot of surgery and he won't be able to take up the job. Wonder where Jess's family are?

I'd so love to see Helen settled and happy.

selsigfach · 02/10/2016 12:44

Oh, please translate 'pal' to a soft southerner. I assumed it was just sarcasm.

ppeatfruit · 02/10/2016 13:05

Why didn't Emma ,or David, shout at Titch "YOU'RE THE LIAR, you lying piece of poo."?

BOOP for Emms telling him to leave the village though Grin.

Pal used in the right way can go from "mate" to "cunt" depending on the context.

I wish Jazzer had told Rob he was a sack of shit.

Shite as he is Scottish

EBearhug · 02/10/2016 14:06

Why didn't Emma ,or David, shout at Titch "YOU'RE THE LIAR, you lying piece of poo."?

We don't know that Emma didn't - we couldn't hear all her tirade at him.

TheAntiBoop · 02/10/2016 14:08

I'm a southerner and I've always known'pal' to be used as a way of doing 'mr nicey about to kick the shit out of you'. Gangster style. That's how Americans use it as well isn't it? It's a good word for spitting out with contempt.

I always thought being asked to pay via PayPal had slightly threatening overtones to it.

I like jazzer pointing out to rob that he doesn't like it when other people use their force on him. I don't think jazzer will go and beat him up but I can't see him being gentle if he has to step in again. Maybe rob will go and complain to Harrison about his treatment and Harrison being such a wet blanket will be bound to investigate and take Dave and jazz down the station

I wish Jazzer had called him 'son'. I used to laugh to myself (as a nurse) when old men (patients) would call the cocky house officers 'son'. Grin
Disclaimer: not all HOs were cocky. Some were v pleasant and good at their jobs, even if they often were awfie young!

I didn't know 'shite' in that context is Scottish/Glaswegian. Maybe i hear it so often that it sounds commonplace to me. I rarely swear too. Rob makes me do it. Smile

Incidentally the actor who plays Jazzer is from Corby - with Scottish parents though.

enochroot · 02/10/2016 15:15

Somehow I can't imagine Crawford of Lymond saying "you wee shite", Francis!

TopazRocks · 02/10/2016 15:20

Re-linguistic discussion, I was thinking last week about the word 'put'. It got a mention on the last TA thread. In a previous life (before nursing) I did a degree and one of my courses was in linguistics. The lecturer got us all to pronounce 'put' and it was a great example of difference in accent as everyone in the class gave it a different pronunciation. Me with a Glasgow accent, the lecturer was Yorkshire, another student from SE England, etc. You should all listen hard or ask your pals.Grin

SealSong · 02/10/2016 15:37

Just listened to Friday's episode again....what a great piece of radio drama. I like how they gave us plenty to listen closely to in order it figure out what was happening instead of spelling it out. Great escalation of tension.

Is SOC gone now? If so, who is the replacement?

TopazRocks · 02/10/2016 15:48

Huw somebody is replacement - though just now it's an interim person, Head of Dram,a woman's name. Huw thing has experience in TV drama .

TopazRocks · 02/10/2016 16:03

As small children we lived in deepest rural Ayrshire but had parents who spoke fairly standard English with a Scottish accent. When my brother started school, my mum was bemused to hear him using the local vernacular along the lines of [if you don't do what I say] 'I'll caw yer heid aff'.Smile

Volatile · 02/10/2016 16:09

Interested to hear that Jazzer is from Corby... It really is a wee bit of Scotland in England, most odd. We visit fairly often as it is the centre of Highland dancing in England... And it seems to have more Scots in it than Auchtermuchty does...

I have a very clear memory of arguing with a friend when I was in Primary Three that there was no such word as "shit", it was "shite" that was the Bad Word that meant poo and stuff. I genuinely thought she had heard or read it incorrectly! (Born and bred Central Scotland).

Cromwell1536 · 02/10/2016 17:20

Can't comment on the shit/shite debate, but thought I'd share the excellent Tom Hollander

Cromwell1536 · 02/10/2016 17:27

So, is it 'shite' when a noun, and 'shit' when a verb??
