"Get outta my village" screams Peggy Mitchell

OP posts:

I found the big with Rob reading Henry the story about the wicked mother to be truly painful to listen to. It was quite well done, notwithstanding the limitations of the Henry actor. Too well done to be entertaining.

BertrandRussell · 11/05/2016 12:47

"Regarding Peggy, I do think she has a close "interest" in village life and she was full of speculation in the first day or two after the stabbing. I thought for her to direct JD onto other topics was a little rich..."

Well of course she was, it was her bloody granddaughter being arrested for stabbing her husband! What was she supposed to do- say "oh, nothing to do with me, not my business" and carry on watching Midsomer Murders? What she said was something like " It's hardly the time to rake over the past, we need to think about how to support Helen" when JD was going on about Greg and John.

I don't think I have ever heard her gossip. She can be a cow, but her instincts about people are usually spot on (Rob excepted. And that bizarre outburst about Henry and the rabbit). But she's usually really switched on and she usually tells it like it is.

BYOSnowman · 11/05/2016 12:53

I'm with you Bertrand.

The comments about Christine sound more like badly written 'Ho Ho, the trials and tribulations of house sharing' rather than bitching. Their comedy writer clearly left just before the kitchen saga.

And the whole will sl felt like inserted drama and not something Peggy would do. I really don't think she would discuss it with anyone - just do it

trevortrevorslatterfry · 11/05/2016 13:40

Thankyou for the new thread and hello everyone!

NotdeadyetBOING · 11/05/2016 13:45

Agree about it being nigh on impossible to bear listening to Henry being groomed by Knob. Fear that could be my line in the sand in terms of what makes me switch off.

AugustaFinkNottle · 11/05/2016 14:23

I wouldn't have said Peggy's instincts about Tony were spot on. As she herself admitted, she got the whole thing about her will wrong too.

AugustaFinkNottle · 11/05/2016 14:27

Are there ANY other story lines going on??

Thinking about it, there's really quite a lot bubbling under in addition to what R4 lists. There's the question of George's mysterious wealth, Fallon and Emma's buying expedition, the wider issue of Josh's involvement in the pastured egg business in competition with his business with Neil, whether Caroline and Oliver are coming back and where the Grundys are going to live, whatever's going on with Justin and Lil, Toby's mysterious problems in Brighton - and probably more I haven't thought of.

BYOSnowman · 11/05/2016 14:28

The will thing was a crap sl though which I didn't think worked wrt any of the characters involved.

You could almost see the cogs whirring 'oooh lets get a big will sl going, Tony will get pissed off and then we will have him almost die and then it will all go back to how it was'

In fact - I think they use a snow globe - shake it up and create a snow storm and then put it down and let everything settle to exactly how it was before (the will, the great move etc etc)

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2016 14:29

Ref. other story lines R4 we also have Pip's love life SL which is a roller coaster: It now looks like Mathew is keen to go on to pastures new in more ways than one Wink.

Oh and a bit of competition between Josh and Toby over a cute 'squeaky voiced' journalist. (I don't remember her name). also Jim and Jazzer's ongoing relationship. There's quite a few really Grin

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2016 14:32

Sorry we cross posted Augusta

Stickerrocks · 11/05/2016 14:50

There really is no hope of Henry suddenly seeing the light and revealing how evil Rob is, because in his simplistic world, he had fun with Daddy, Mummy was shouty and Daddy only got cross with him when Mummy made him. Rob is going to manipulate him, so that he has control over Helen through his control of her son. It gives him the ultimate weapon if Henry loves Rob more than he loves Helen, after all, Mummy has gone on holiday and left Henry.

BYOSnowman · 11/05/2016 14:53

Aren't 5yo feelings a bit more complex than that though?

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2016 15:01

Stick But he has been told not to lie, he did see exactly what happened so he MUST remember it. It sounds like his interviewer was asking him leading questions . Left to himself he may well suddenly remember it ALL.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 11/05/2016 18:31

Place marking

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/05/2016 19:20

That's not the memory I hoped she was going to talk about. Hmm

Vango · 11/05/2016 19:20

What a lovely episode that was? Helen sounded stronger, I thought, and confident now in her opinion of Rob. I like Josh. Love his persuasive flattery. So easy to win Bert round!

Vango · 11/05/2016 19:21

*rogue question mark.

What a lovely episode that was.

Thymeout · 11/05/2016 19:21

But how much did he see? How long was he standing at the door? He saw Mummy stab Daddy but did he see Daddy give her the knife?

I v much doubt he could have made sense of all the talk about Greg, even if he was there for that bit.

BYOSnowman · 11/05/2016 19:22

What was her memory? That she spilt the custard?

Vango · 11/05/2016 19:27

Just a memory from primary school involving receipt of stolen sweets. To demonstrate her weakness and transparency (she was caught even though she hadn't stolen the sweet herself). Helen's afraid that the MBU won't accept her.

BYOSnowman · 11/05/2016 19:29

Oh

selsigfach · 11/05/2016 19:30

I thought she was going to reveal the rape (why hasn't she? Argh) at the point of saying "I don't even drink much... [the last time I got drunk, my husband raped me and got me pregnant]".

AugustaFinkNottle · 11/05/2016 19:35

I still found Helen vaguely annoying in that episode - I think it was the attitude that she should get what she wants and anyone who stops her is beastly and unfair. But I do tell myself that that's not really fair, because she's feeling beaten down by the bail decision and has at last woken up to caring about the baby and realising how dangerous it would be for Rob to get his hands on him.

Vango · 11/05/2016 19:42

Gosh I didn't hear that Augusta. I thought she sounded defeated (again). Anna could have done a better job of reminding her that she had managed as a single mum before, though I accept she doesn't know Helen yet.

EasyToEatTiger · 11/05/2016 20:14

BYOS, I love the idea of a snow globe. I am horrified that Helen doesn't have a psychiatrist. She has spent over a month in custody without medical help and with no-one putting any pieces together. It makes very, very tiresome listening. Helen has, at no point made any inference as to why her children are in danger by staying with her husband. Because the professionals who are parachuted in are subsequently drowned for the sake of Our Dear Leader who's name needs no mention. GGGGrrrrrrrrrr
