I don't think the writers have a clear idea where they're going with the story. They enjoy writing the scenes, the scenes have potential to either increase rob's power or bring him down but they won't jump one way or the other until SOC thinks he's milked it for all it's worth.
Also, we can't actually trust what we hear if that mistake about Dr Locke is anything to go by.
In other words, I no longer expect any logic or coherence.

trevortrevorslatterfry · 26/01/2016 09:30

I was intrigued by your mentions of Cook and I have just googled it - it looks amazing! V jealous of you all - my closest is 100 miles away .

The beef wellington looks verrrry nice I've been dreaming of it since watching Mary Berry making it on TV last night

I am pretty sure you can get Amaretti biscuits in the normal supermarket. Actually where do the residents of Ambridge do their actual grocery shopping? They will all be bankrupt if they stock their cupboards from the local shop and the farm shop, if prices in my local equivalents are anything to go by.

trevortrevorslatterfry · 26/01/2016 09:30

^^ Too many actuals Blush

MeolsCop · 26/01/2016 09:32

Knob just wants to bend people to his will, I think. It really doesn't matter why. It's his 'thing', it runs in his veins. If someone changed their mind and started agreeing with him, he'd probably wait a while then begin taking the contrary position and manipulate them back round again, just because he gets such a buzz from pulling the strings in every single interaction with others.

That's why he hates and fears Kirsty so much - she sees through him and can't be played.

Gruach · 26/01/2016 09:50

Seek I don't believe Rob gives a damn one way or the other about organic production!

Rob has been driven out of his inheritance. Whether that was his own fault or whether Miles is the golden child we cannot yet tell. But everything he does is motivated by a desire to have revenge on life and establish a new kingdom.

I said in a past thread that he might have found Canada less painful because his status would have been blurry there. But I imagine it would also have been easier for him, in the midst of mega-farming and with no close ties to any community, to disguise to himself (or at least shove to the back of his mind) the fact that he had nothing of his own.

Ambridge would be the worst possible place for someone with his ... is pathology the right word? A place where everyone lives closely tied to family and to their own land or connection to land. And everyone is respected for their place in the landscape. Look how venemous he's been towards "village girls who struck lucky" - he saw them with more status and stake in the community than he had with all his big salary. If, on their return from Canada, he and Jess had gone to a big, anonymous city he'd have been much happier and less intent on destroying other people to further his own aims. (He would still have been an evil colleague but would have had less scope to take over entire families.)

Sending Tom to Canada was definitely an early, bold attempt to userp a prince of the land.

What was my point again ...? Oh yes, something about him not acting based on any firmly held principles but purely on animal instinct ...

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2016 09:52

Burns Night is celebrated in Fr. too I went to one last night (well Sunday actually) but we had haggis and neeps n tatties.

Gruach · 26/01/2016 09:57

I remember the point - Ambridge is impossible for him because it is a constant parade of people coming into their various inheritances. Phoebe's move from Tucker Archer/Aldridge has been beautifully done. Even the Grundys are closer to their hearts' desire. All through love and connectedness. Whereas Rob has to achieve everything through scheming and taking what doesn't belong to him. Fabulous contrast.

In fact I've talked myself into a BOOP for SOC's grand vision. Shock

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2016 10:09

WOW Gruach JUST WOW Shock Shock Agree though Grin

CryHavoc · 26/01/2016 10:34

I really enjoyed Matthew and Pip shooting down the Fairbrethren and their chicken ideas. The conversation about the ewe hogs compared with the half-arsed 'health egg' plan highlighted the gap between actual farmers and people who are essentially playing at it. Plus I find Rex and Toby intensely irritating and I was afraid the SW might be landing Pip with one of them, thus making them permanent.

LyndaNotLinda · 26/01/2016 10:36

I think you get the BOOP points Gruach!

If SOC is reading this thread, he'll claim it as his Wink

redshoeblueshoe · 26/01/2016 11:06

trevortrevor you can actually get Amaretti biscuits in Aldi - and they actually sell haggis too Grin

LillianGish · 26/01/2016 11:15

It would explain his obsession with having a son of his own too Gruach and with getting his hands on Peggy's inheritance. Helen (and her family) are a means to that end - that means Johnny must be on very shaky ground (though he seems to have fallen off SOC's radar at the moment). He is literally a cuckoo in the nest - perhaps that why Kirsty with her bird-watching connections is such a terrifying adversary.

EBearhug · 26/01/2016 11:44

I think Rex would probably be okay without Toby. In fact, Toby and Rob are both alpha-male types (at least in their own heads,) and at some point, will probably come to blows about who should be top dog. And one could die and the other go to prison and we'd be shot of both of them.

ppeatfruit · 26/01/2016 11:49

Yup good idea Ebearhug Grin They could have a duel on the green.

redshoeblueshoe · 26/01/2016 12:18

Would it be possible for them both to die in a duel ? Grin

BYOSnowman · 26/01/2016 12:22

Trevor - cook deliver

I think Matthew will be a 'wherever he lays his hat' type with women and she will get dumped for his new bosses daughter

Pip will end up shagging Toby to make herself feel better- cue lots of boring stuff before she ends up with Rex

EBearhug · 26/01/2016 12:28

Would it be possible for them both to die in a duel?

If I were the script writer, definitely.

redshoeblueshoe · 26/01/2016 12:52

Ebearhug then I can confirm I will provide you with a reference when you apply for the SW job

Stickerrocks · 26/01/2016 13:26

I always picture Rob's mother Ursula as Horrible Grandma from Friday Night Dinner with a hint of the Whiteadders from Blackadder II thrown in.

Toomuchtea · 26/01/2016 13:48

I will also provide you with a reference Ebearhug.

It's a perfect storm of blandness to have the Fairbrethren, Pip and Matthew.

BYOSnowman · 26/01/2016 14:03

I'm sure there are famous cases of both duellers dying

Why can't we have rob killing Toby in a hit and run (ha ha, look who can't drive now!) and then rob will try and blame Helen but everyone will be very puzzled because she's pregnant and everyone knows pregnant women can't drive. So he will go down for it. And then we will find out Henry was driving.

redshoeblueshoe · 26/01/2016 14:38

BYOS - Knob would never protect Henwee over himself.
Toomuchtea - perfect storm of blandness - that's exactly it

BYOSnowman · 26/01/2016 14:56

Oh no - knob will go down can bounced it was Helen who set him up. Cue microphone panning to an audibly smirking Henry

BertrandRussell · 26/01/2016 15:02

My friend's in Friday Night Dinner.

BYOSnowman · 26/01/2016 15:03

Can bounced should say convinced

I love the idea of him knowing he didn't do it but not being able to figure it out!
