silly spell checker!

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/01/2016 14:30

Dfw that is all fascinating!!

I may be wrong but I think the lenten fast - giving up milk and eggs (using the last up in pancakes before lent) was to fit in with cows/goats/sheep having young and hens hatching chicks before going back to using the milk and eggs once they had had their young if that makes sense. I could be totally wrong though.

I don't think it is that Ruth is the cowsuperwoman (although she is responsible for the quality of the stock) it is that she finally tumbled to the issue being costs not yield. If the measure you have been using is yield, it can be hard to see it afresh and tbf she said it was Ray who spotted it.

enochroot · 02/01/2016 14:34

What I want to know is whether or not Pip's out of a job!

SladeGreen · 02/01/2016 16:18

Woah, I've just caught up on last night's episode and now I am very confused.

When Ruth suggested selling the herd, David was absolutely horrified..however, he'd already pondered "getting out of milk" while Ruth was away, and dreaded having to tell her. So he KNEW it was already on the cards, and yet he had the audacity to be pissed off when Ruth brought it up as her own idea! Shock

lljkk · 02/01/2016 16:54

Thanks @ DairyFW for the insights.

Dipankrispaneven · 02/01/2016 17:34

Pip won't be out of a job, Brookfield's finances will turn right round and they'll also have a long term job for Mathew.

FinestGrundyTurkey · 02/01/2016 18:48

Are they going to spring a Nigel-on-the-roof type drama on us tonight, perhaps?

(having lulled everybody into a false sense of...whatever it would be? Security not the right word Confused)

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 02/01/2016 19:38

Tonight. Not unless you get an extra episiode of TA Wink

Presumably Pip will continue with her plan of being self employed.

But yes I noticed that David's outrage at selling the herd. The herd he was going to sell. But I imagine even if you have to sell your cows, especially milkers that you have a lt working rs with it must be tough.
My uncle used to have to take a day off every year when they came for the cattle and his was a beef herd. Too soft hearted to be a farmerSmile

Bit OT but I drove to where the farm I worked as a teenager today. There is no sign at all of it left. It is all housesSad and that was a small holding that made good money. Just not as good as retiring and selling it for housing.

But the farm shop turned over ~£3000 per day in the midsummer. Then on top of that there was the fruit and veg that went out to contract orders with supermarkets and the wholesalers.

So in theory Bridge Farm, which also sells meat might do ok as an earner if they are on a profit share as well as a wage.
Presumably seeing as P&T made a big deal out of their retirement and pension they no longer take the same amount out of the business other than Ts side business with the cows.

FinestGrundyTurkey · 02/01/2016 20:23

Oh no - oops - not tonight (have BH loss of mental calendar Grin)

EBearhug · 02/01/2016 20:43

Oh, I don't think it's any coincidence that Lent matches the time in the northern hemisphere where stores from last year would be starting to run a bit low, eggs and milk would be in low production, and new vegetables and fruit haven't got going for the new season.

BYOSnowman · 02/01/2016 21:07

Maybe pip will proceed with the cows in home farm land scheme without the brethren and they will disappear off to wherever they came from. I don't think there are any other women suitable for them age wise are there?

selsigfach · 02/01/2016 22:02

Rex and Phoebe could be a good match when she's a bit older. I wouldn't want to inflict Toby on anyone!

AnnieNoMouse · 02/01/2016 22:08

No!! Phoebe can do far better than him, preferably someone she meets during the brilliant career that follows Oxford (and doesn't bring her back to Ambridge to stand by her man). I see her as a future Laura Khunsberg (sp) or Stephanie Flanders

I wouldn't want to inflict Toby on anyone!
Kate maybe? Grin

FloraDiesEarly · 03/01/2016 00:26

The thread filled up quickly between Christmas and New Year so I thought something dramatic must have happened in the episodes. Turns out it's mainly posts about different types of dairy farming.

I love this thread Grin

" Being a cow sounds rather relentless " - this made me laugh Gruach but I think you're right. There was someone on Woman's Hour recently linking veganism to feminism because all the dairy things we eat are from female animals and we control the animals etc. Or something like that. Did anyone else hear the episode?

BertrandRussell · 03/01/2016 00:49

"

That was just weird, wasn't it? It was like a continuity error.........

LillianGish · 03/01/2016 08:51

I didn't think he was horrified so much as astounded that she was suggesting it. He had been dreading telling Ruth his plan because he thought she would never agree to getting rid of the herd. When he left the house she thought he was furious at her plan in fact he was overwhelmed with relief and had gone out to look at his cows. It was slightly surprising that he didn't tell Ruth his plan - I think he was just delighted she had come up with a better one and that she was back on board with the farm and the family. They are both still sad to get rid of the Friesians, but know it is for the greater good.

stilllearnin · 03/01/2016 09:04

Hello I am back and caught up! Still waiting for the big Knob and Hellin reveal then I see? Flora I am vegan and that all started when I was breastfeeding because in my mind there was a link to dairy farming. I do love the farming chat here tho and know a few farmers. Just so you know I am not anti meat or dairy or farming - I just made a choice for myself. (I have just 'enjoyed' scrambled tofu for breakfast - it was not as lovely as scrambled egg unfortunately) (As you were)

ColdTeaAgain · 03/01/2016 09:23

I would of enjoyed listening to any of the others talk farming for a whole episode but Ruth just grates on me these days. Her storyline just hasn't felt believable with he way she has responded to everything over the past few months. Hopefully, SOC will refocus when it comes to Ruth and David.

IorekByrnisonsArmour · 03/01/2016 09:55

Nigel and Grace on R4 now

IorekByrnisonsArmour · 03/01/2016 09:58

And THE scream ...

BYOSnowman · 03/01/2016 10:28

So Ruth came back and went straight to bed without seeing Ben? What has happened to that kid? Rearranging the cereal cupboard was clearly a cry for help (what parent wouldn't worry about a teen willingly performing household tasks)

Maybe we should club together and buy him a cow outfit so that he gets a bit of attention from his parents.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2016 11:22

I agree Lilian Dave was soo relieved that Roof wasn't leaving him for a N.Z. hunk, the obsessing about the herd was part of (subconsciously) punishing her for going away (maybe Ben is too). BYOS.

Hopefully Ian, Hell and Pat will poison the bananas in knobs' smoothie tonight Grin

Slimmingcrackers · 03/01/2016 11:25

Long-time lurker here; love this thread.

Fwiw I was a wee bit disappointed in the 65th anniv episode. Agree with Coldteaagain and R4.

Apologies if I'm repeating what others have said.

I'm all for realism, and rejecting cheap soap-opera-y type tricks and thrills, and for long-sustained stories and for referencing past and future etc etc, but it felt like the scriptwriters had had a meeting deciding on all of those bullet points and were determined to include them all , instead of allowing the narrative to be character led, which is why the writing doesn't seem credible atm.

As JessieMcJ says down thread, it all seems v haphazard.

It's like the script writing team are listening to everyone's differing povs and are trying to accommodate all of them, without having firm convictions and a strong direction themselves.

I simply don't buy that all of Ruth's concerns about not being on the outside of the Archer family, about not being given a say, and her ambivalence about her future, are suddenly all ignored in favour of making the decision that the farm should switch to grass feeding (or whatever the technical term is); which in itself, isn't particular interesting (although the many posts on the subject here might suggest otherwise!!).

Nor, as others have pointed out, does her relationship with her dc seem remotely credible (although to be fair, all soap operas are woeful when it comes to children).

The rest of it was enjoyable though; Rob and Helen story perhaps heading towards some sort of anorexia-in-pregnancy related health crisis?

Wonderful that Lynda and Scruff have been reunited!

Not sure why they brought the doctor back; he seems so leaden.

What has happened to the relationship "ishews" between Alistair and Shula?

And why so little of Lillian? Apart from the tiniest of references at Christmas you would hardly know she was still resident at Home Farm.

Harrumph.

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/01/2016 11:33

Welcome Slimmingcrackers - great analysis. I agree entirely.

DocLocke has been brought back for The Widow Pargetter, which will enrage St Smugula. I have a feeling that Lilian is on the way out - she will either SOTMC or vanish into the sunset with Justin.

Gruach · 03/01/2016 12:04

It is frustrating when we hear too little of the more attractive characters or when relationships seem oddly skewed because relevant friends, partners, children don't appear - but I guess it's inevitable given that there are now about 90 characters to fit into roughly 78 minutes a week.

And, I'm afraid, because the SWs are now working without an archivist they're very, very likely to stick more to the higher profile stories and characters - because they probably feel less familiar with the entire make up of Ambridge than some of us do. It's a pity of course; what made Ambridge lively and fascinating was the randomness and oddity.
