Rejoice, for the Dopeys are staying in Ambridge to feast on Oedipal flapjacks. Or at least David is. Discuss The Archers here.

Will Peggy make it to the end of this thread?

Arkwright Hall, owned by that very fine organisation, The Landmark Trust*. It has a lake - the place where Jim, Robert, Patrick and Kirsty go birdwatching. It occurred to me that the LT could get some fantastic PR from this by offering it up as a temporary home for displaced Ambridge residents.

*Oddly, I've never been able to find Arkwright Hall in the Landmark Trust handbook. I'd sign up for a week there like a shot.

Re tourism in Ambridge: Ambridge Hall won't be taking visitors for the foreseeable future, will it? I'm not sure I'd pay to stay at Home Farm for the moment either.

I don't think Ed was one of his rescuers. He and Eddie were rowing about and he kept saying to Eddie 'What's that?' and Eddie kept saying 'It's nothing...'

nauticant · 08/03/2015 11:54

Two days of flood annoyed me enough to make me skip the rest of natural disaster week. That's the first time I've had a break like that. But I did follow this thread and enjoyed the updates, they were a laugh.

I've now realised that after a lifetime of listening (passive listening as a kid changing into a proper addiction) it's time to knock it on the head and stop listening. My very own Archers flounce!

Here's how I see it:

The shift from character-focused to event-driven means I get the Eastenders/Emmerdale vibe while the characters I've known for a long time, and in some cases have grown up with, are fading away before my ears.

Swapping dearly beloved characters for event-delivery mechanisms is a swizz. A perma-cycle of character X heads toward drama, character Y is in crisis, and character Z is in aftermath is tiring and disheartening. (And I really don't fancy listening to post flood!/what flood?)

I can see why other people will want to listen but these days it doesn't give me the 7pm wander through characters' lives of mundanity, eccentricity, and humour I've enjoyed in the past. A bit of drama every now and then is one thing but being made anxious round about teatime is not what I'm after. It's why I never warmed to Eastenders and how I lost my love of Corrie.

Time for me to be off. Good listening to you all! Special thanks to BuildYourOwnSnowman whose Bah-Humbug-ing over the week has made me realise some of my views are shared by others.

jennyperru · 08/03/2015 11:55

The boat came from Arkwright Lake, someone (David I think) announced it's arrival. Only one boat, Ed and Eddie got to use it after Alistair had rowed himself, Shula, Christine and 'hero' Rob back from the stables.

Hakluyt · 08/03/2015 11:59

I do hope people remember what an arse Rob was at the beginning of the "crisis"- Shula really needs to speak soon.........

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 08/03/2015 12:03

Kindred spirits nauticant!!

Soc has had his moment of high drama ad I'm hoping he has taken feedback on board and it will be much more character led going forward. I fear he's not capable though.

My worry is that they want the prime seven pm slot for something else and the Sunday morning/podcast will take over

PaulineFossil · 08/03/2015 12:04

I thought it was most unlike Eddie to dismiss Ed thinking he'd heard something. He's always struck me as one who'd keep searching if there was even a chance someone was in danger, hence being the one in the boat in the first place.

jennyperru · 08/03/2015 12:07

Did Ed and Eddie actually do anything? They rescued Georges turkey but did they do anything else? I'd have liked Ed to help rescue Charlie so he could be let off all that hedge trimming he agreed to.

enochroot · 08/03/2015 12:42

You're right. Sorry. Ed heard the shouts and Eddie said to go back.

I was infested with the idea that the post-flood Ed might fall on his feet once in a while.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/03/2015 12:51

I'm still hoping for an upturn! I think he and the family will go to stay at Grange Farm with Oliver and Caroline.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 08/03/2015 12:55

@jennyperru

Did Ed and Eddie actually do anything? They rescued Georges turkey but did they do anything else? I'd have liked Ed to help rescue Charlie so he could be let off all that hedge trimming he agreed to.

That would have been good.

I had to go out so didn't get all of the film this morning but interestingly the bit at the beginning when Pip and David were talking as Ruth was leaving could have been her about to say |But I didn't want to leave anyway

Nauticant sad for you.

enochroot · 08/03/2015 13:13

Is Grange Farm soaked as well?

The homeless seem to be:-
Eddie, Clarrie and Joe
Ed & Emma
Bert and Freda
Christine
Linda and Robert
Jim and Jazzer
Adam and Ian

Anyone else?

Davros · 08/03/2015 13:14

Haven't finished reading this thread but catching up on the film now. Just to say, this stupid flood story does NOT make good radio. All sound effects and shouting. Tedious!

ppeatfruit · 08/03/2015 13:17

Thanks jennyperu DH must 've spoken Shock when that was said Grin.

I suppose that Ed was very tired when they heard Adam calling, (didn't they rescue all of the people round the green?) I was a bit surpised at that bit too. Not enough to stop listening though, that's a shame Nauticant.

ZeroFunDame · 08/03/2015 13:25

What? nauticant? You choose the only two hours in the week my phone isn't in my hand - to flounce?

How will I live?

(Are you still going to grace the thread? Pease say yes. )

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/03/2015 13:38

I hope you change your mind, nauticant. We'll miss you if you don't at least stay on the thread!

Everyone in Grange Spinney has been flooded. I think that includes Hilary Noakes, the Buttons and the Thwaites.

PseudoBadger · 08/03/2015 13:53

Nautical I'll miss you, especially as I keep meaning to say how much I enjoy your name!

toldmywrath · 08/03/2015 14:39

I listened to the omnibus & really enjoyed it. However, having caught up with the thread I must say how dismayed I am at Oliviamumsnet's avowed statement that she isn't worried about poor Scruff.
I bet she wasn't even pleased that the gerbil & Lucky the turkey were safe & sound hmmph.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/03/2015 14:53

Surely everyone must have cheered out loud once we knew the ferrets were safe? I gather Hilary Noakes's cockatoo made it to GG as well, but I'm not sure if it/he/she flew there or hitched a lift on the tractor.

toldmywrath · 08/03/2015 15:17

Oh I must have missed the cockatoo segment Mimsy (& poor lambs & sheep, too Sad)

toldmywrath · 08/03/2015 15:18

Gerbil?? I meant ferrets (as we all know, gerbils were the cause of the black death Grin )

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/03/2015 15:57

I think I got the cockatoo bit from the timeline, not the programme, toldmywrath!

cheminotte · 08/03/2015 16:14

Are all parish churches well stocked with blankets etc in case they need to be a place of refuge?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/03/2015 16:21

I doubt it, cheminotte, but in this instance I believe Carol nipped back to Glebe before the waters rose too high and brought a lot back with her.

OddFodd · 08/03/2015 16:25

The film worked so much better than the episodes - I didn't have a clue what was going on during the week because I listen with half an ear which is usually adequate but not when most of the episode is shouting and gurgling. I did like the drowning Charlie sound effects.

I wish you weren't flouncing nauticant but I completely get where you're coming from :(
