I thought Dan died following trying to turn a sheep which had got stuck in its back....yes, the wiki page says 'Elizabeth witnessed his fatal attempt to rescue a sheep in difficulty, despite her pleading with him not to.'

(can't remember what happened to the sheep. Does anyone know how/why they get on their backs? We once rescued one - we were out walking and a lamb was stood on the path baaing piteously but not moving - which seemed very odd behaviour esp as we had the dog with us, so we looked around and saw the ewe. DH turned her and the pair trotted off together.)

Oh...I do hope the Brookfield sheep and all those new lambs are safely out on higher ground!
