Same with Kate - the qualities for being a good soap character are quite different from the qualities for being someone who is positive to live with... Also, I think over the years, they've allowed Matt's kinder side to seep through from time to time, because he's a popular character, and popular characters have to have some redeeming features. Otherwise, they end up like Clive Horrobin.

Has Matt been abducted by Russian mafia? I don't know what actually happened before - as some was on Extra anyway, which I can't access - but I also missed bits of TA proper back then. I wonder if it's some kind of blackmail so he's been dipping into joint accounts, selling paintings, etc. to create funds. If he's left his winter wear, he's not gone to Russia of his own free will in January.

Knob is definitely telling Ian. It kills several birds with one stone - messes things up for Ian, Adam and Charlie, and alienated them from Helen.

Knob sounded distinctly threatening when he said to Helen something to the effect of "if I thought for one moment that you believed I was the father ..." Thoroughly nasty piece of work.

I'm wondering if Matt doing a flit with all the assets is his way of finally getting revenge on Lillian for her affair with his brother, Paul. He seems like just the sort of person to harbour a hidden grudge and act accordingly when the time is right.

I've been listen to TA since I was a child in the 70s (nothing happened until 11am on a Sunday so the omnibus could be listened to).

I listen to it still but I will confess that to this day I have no fucking idea what's going on.

I can't bear the Helrob storyline being drawn out, convoluted agony. Please bump him off someone, anyone. Leave Ian/Adam alone you big bully.

I love the HelRob story being drawn out. That's the proper pace of TA, where things take months or even years. In contrast, the Brookfield story has been ridiculously fast paced.

We've been on a long round trip today and actually slowed down a couple of miles from home so we could finish listening to TA this evening, both muttering Don't tell him, Helen!

Rob will see that snippet of information as revenge for Ian punching him in front of Wiggo but how will he use it I wonder. If it is leaked obviously by Rob then Ian would probably feel free to give Helen a piece of his mind about Rob.

Methinks Ian has been off doing panto or something and is shortly going to feature quite a lot.

As for Peggy's logic that Lillian & Jennifer have married well and are secure. Well, how wrong she was.

I think if Matt had cleaned out everything even Lilian would be worried. I'm sure she kept her own money separate and invested a portion into their business.

I am hoping he will return - Lilian and he are good radio. I think the Harrison nosiness wasn't right but then perhaps not a lot of crime for him to be dealing with elsewhere so feeble effort by scriptwriters to drip feed Lilian's findings.

If Rob was sterile he wouldn't be pushing for Helen to get pregnant. I'm thinking she already is. He will use his info on Charlie to upset Ian who will dash to see Helen who will confront Ro b and then fireworks !

So Rob is willing to face paying out several £000s per month for the next 18 years to a woman he hates for a child which isn't his, (money which could be spent on Helen, Henry and any new baby Robs) together with the probable hassle, inconvenience and embarrassment of arrestment of wages, but Jess won't have won.

Is Helen going to have the gumption to point out the flaw in this ?

Or to suggest that when the DNA test is negative (which of course darling Rob it will be) Jess will be shown up to be the lying, vindictive mad woman Helen knows she is?

I'm finding the Helen/Rob story line increasingly uncomfortable.
