How about we immortalise Schrodinger's Baby in the opening paragraph?

How long will this thread last DadDadDad?

Probably a 'not competing with friends' thing Allmimsy

I'm not sure that Emm and Ed would want to run a place like GG though. perhaps it's not quite the place of 2 young less than sophisticated people. I'm trying to sound kind here Grin Zero

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 20/09/2014 16:53

It's a cutthroat world, though, ppeat! I vaguely recall a rather tense conversation between Elizabeth and Caroline about accommodation. Years ago Nigel and Caroline were rather close, weren't they? Nigel would have been far too gentlemanly to try to poach business from GG and Caroline would probably have taken the same approach. No such qualms from the vile Lizzie, though!

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 20/09/2014 16:56

I think inheritance is unlikely. Caroline and Oliver aren't gettibg any younger and there may well come a point where they need to sell to pay for medical care etc

Same goes for peggoi too.

unitarian · 20/09/2014 18:06

But Roy definitely fancied Eliz before the camping fest.
I think that if it went to a tribunal she would cite her oft expressed reluctance to go camping, his persistant insistence that she should, her status as a lonely vulnerable woman, moment of weakness. Her awareness that he was married and her attempts to end the relationship which he wouldn't accept.
I think she would get off very lightly, especially if he came across as whiney/aggressive in court, which he would.

That's not to say I'm defending her. I just feel that in real life she would probably win & both would lose their reputations so it probably wouldn't come to a tribunal and be settled beforehand.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 20/09/2014 18:10

I think it would only be like that in a tribunal because she is a woman. Reverse the genders and she would be crucified!!

Anyway, I don't think it will get far enough for us to get our day in court!!

unitarian · 20/09/2014 18:19

Well yes. She would try every trick in the book.

Do you remember the judge in the Jeffrey Archer trial describing Mrs A as 'fragrant'?
Lizzie would be fragrant. Very fragrant.

unitarian · 20/09/2014 18:22

In fragrante Grin

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 20/09/2014 20:13

Well let's hope it's a woman rather than a man - I think she would give Roy a healthy settlement!!

I want Roy to get a good settlement because it's in Hayley's interests. If her h/stbxh is going to act a knob it would be doubly bad if she were to suffer financially for it too

stilllearnin · 20/09/2014 23:39

Would either go to usha by the way? I'd have thought they'd consult some solicitor unconnected with the village for fear of losing face

Veritata · 21/09/2014 00:25

I'm surprised they've left the situation with the naming ceremony in limbo. We're presumably supposed to believe that, at least up to Saturday, Lynda has been paralysed by indecision/fear of telling Leonie, and that Robert has meekly stayed silent. I just don't buy it. I suppose I might buy a scenario where Robert is staying quiet whilst secretly performing miracles behind the scenes to save the day - but I'd have thought he'd have involved Fallon, and she's as much in the dark as we are.

unitarian · 21/09/2014 00:45

I would expect the respective lawyers to advise settling before it went to tribunal.

In RL Loxley Hall must have employers' liability insurance and this would foot the bill for the legal expenses in the event of a claim by an employee and the insurance company would go for a settlement rather than going all the way to a tribunal because it is cheaper than fighting the case. LH would have to pay the settlement figure though and this would be sizeable.

The employee, if not in a union, would probably engage a lawyer on a no-win-no-fee basis and, again, a settlement figure would be a more certain return than a tribunal hearing.

On other words, I expect this to cost LH money but Lizzie might manage to keep it quiet if she agrees to a settlement. (I'm guessing somewhere in the region of a year's salary for Roy and Hayley as a minimum figure.)

Any claim by an employeee will greatly increase Loxley Hall's insurance premiums for many years to come so if Roy is out for revenge, and he seems to be, then he is likely to get it.

Freddie could ask questions about mismanagement of his estate when he comes into his inheritance because it is going to be many thousands less than it should be.
Now THAT could be interesting.......

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 21/09/2014 08:28

I wish you were onthe sw team Unitarian!!

I think it's only a matter of time before phoebe finds out and then it will see out. You can't keep secrets in a village! Once everyone knows Roy has nothing to lose.

As for the naming ceremony - I'm not sure I can bear to listen to an episode full of London stereotypes

LillianGish · 21/09/2014 08:32

I don't agree with those who say that if you reverse the genders in the Roy/Elizabeth situation things would look very different. A married woman has a one night stand with her recently-widowed boss on an office away day and then pursues him with declarations of love saying she is going to leave her husband and kids would probably be portrayed as a stalker. The reason the two of them can't work together anymore is because Roy wouldn't let it go and this is what is going to come to light if he pursues it further. Remember Hayley thinks it was a one night stand at the festival which has led to his sacking which would have been very unfair - not sure she'll continue to on Roy's side when she finds out the truth.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 21/09/2014 08:43

That's what Hayley knows but I'm not sure it's what she beleives. The locket and the duddle searching for a job and his distant and unkind behaviour over the affair period were noticed!

Ultimately he has done enough for her to want to end the marriage. At the moment she is clinging on, probably because she doesn't really know what to do

Finding out more details may galvanise her into action.

What annoys me with lizzie was that she emotionally manipulated Roy. He declared love and she did the right thing by saying it go any further. Then he got upset and could only possibly be comforted by Roy and played the whole damsel in distress. What did she expect?

The sw seem to think women all behave like this though - both she and fallon have been running hot and cold with their suitor and going from hard to get to totally ignoring to (in lizzies case) shagging.

PetulaGordino · 21/09/2014 08:54

"Ultimately he has done enough for her to want to end the marriage. At the moment she is clinging on, probably because she doesn't really know what to do"

i agree with this. she doesn't have enough information (roy has been very evasive and she knows it). she also may not want to make any decisions that cause more upheaval until roy's (and her) job situation is clear.

Veritata · 21/09/2014 09:24

unitarian, why wouldn't employers' liability insurance pay out the compensation figure? Isn't it similar to motor insurance where the insurance company pays out the damages as well as the costs? Otherwise there's no point in having it, given that if their liability is restricted to legal costs they will always refuse to fight a claim.

Mind you, Lizzie's premiums would whack up, which might be some sort of lesson to her.

cheminotte · 21/09/2014 10:14

I would guess the insurance would want mitigating actions had been taken to reduce costs, i.e. reach an out of court settlement. I think most employment cases are settled out of court as few people or companies want their name in the press and the court can award less than was originally offered.

unitarian · 21/09/2014 11:35

Veritata. Come to think of it, the insurance company would pay- with a knock on effect on the premiums. She might find it cheaper in the long run to pay it herself.

Expensive shag, either way.

ppeatfruit · 21/09/2014 12:44

AllMimsy I meant to reply earlier sorry! I was going to say that since Liz. has converted her dairy to rooms the happy 'arrangement' between LL and GG may well have fallen through. We don't hear from GG or anyone who runs it now though do we?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 21/09/2014 14:04

Hi, ppeat! No, we don't, more's the pity.

ppeatfruit · 21/09/2014 16:03

I wonder what Caroline will say to Liz once the shxx hits the fan as it were Grin

R4 · 21/09/2014 19:02

why wouldn't employers' liability insurance pay out the compensation figure?

Lizzie has been acting on impulse, she hasn't taken advice. She hasn't even sought advice. She's probably voided all insurance.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 21/09/2014 19:07

But do managers of stately homes truly have no training in employment law? Roy should know exactly where he stands.

nauticant · 21/09/2014 19:12

I'm finding Hayley being concerned about job issues/angry at Elizabeth and not going medieval on Rotaboy's ass to be completely unbelievable.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 21/09/2014 19:13

And is the BBC really so poor that neither James nor Robert could make an appearance on Mungo's naming day?
