Bolloxfest is imminent. Will this thread make it to the big day?

Hearing Elizabeth calling Roy on the Walkie Talkie I couldn't help wondering if that was how they might be discovered - Rotaboy leaves his handset somewhere, Hayley picks it up and hears the two of them - perhaps to the tune of the Pet Shops Boys singinging It's a Sin.

Bluestocking · 25/08/2014 08:45

Oh yes, LG, that would be a great scene! Could also be You Were Always On My Mind. And Roy could ring while they're doing Go West.

GypsyFloss · 25/08/2014 09:15

Oh I do like the handset idea Lillian.

ppeatfruit · 25/08/2014 10:29

BuildyourOwn ref. Pheobe's parents' fates; is there something wrong with running a country house or living in S.Africa and lecturing ,or whatever Kate is meant to be doing?. I'd be happy to have my DCs doing either Grin

HamAndPlaques · 25/08/2014 12:39

Apologies if I've missed something - but where is Lily in all of this?

ppeatfruit · 25/08/2014 13:00

Yes Ham also where is Pheobe?

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 25/08/2014 16:18

Ppeat - nothing inherently wrong I just see Roy as one of life's sidekicks and kate has never seemed that accomplished to me. She seems to have married well!

I would just like to see an ambridge woman as successful in her own right and at present I can't think of one who runs a successful business/has a big responsibility job/career without a man providing it/backing it except Shula (maybe Caroline?). I can't think of anyone else but there have been a few female characters kept silent for a while

I had high hopes for Alice but not sure what's going on there so am withholding judgement! Amy becoming a midwife was good but why not see a female character become a vet or doctor or lawyer or accountant or running a successful hair salon or combine repair business!!

ppeatfruit · 25/08/2014 16:29

You've forgotten Usha!

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 25/08/2014 16:33

Yes that's true but she was successful before she moved to ambridge!!

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 25/08/2014 16:56

So many missed opportunities. When Mrs Antrobus died, she left Nightingale Farm to a distant cousin. She was a childless widow who had been very close to Roy and Hayley, and they had been very good to her. It would have been plausible for her to leave NF to them and for them to turn it into a day nursery. Hayley is a qualified nanny and Roy has a keen business brain (ahem). It would have solved their housing problem and given us a good, realistic storyline about a start up business which could have also been a perfectly natural place for lots of characters to meet and chat.

Emma was moderately bright at school but the SWs decided that she would do abysmally in her GCSEs in spite of a lot of last minute revision and then she would give up on school and have a series of dead end jobs. Even when she did a catering course it led to nothing very much.

Susan is not thick by any means and could have returned to vocational education as a mature student.

Fallon had a moderately promising career in the music business, not just as a performer, but also in production - she did some sort of course in that (HND?). This led to absolutely nothing for her, which is so frustrating. Why didn't they send her down to London and have her either become a silent character or commute? She could in the fullness of time have set up a recording studio in one of the business units or used Ambridge as a base for her freelance career.

Alice - just don't get me started. Of course she should have left Ambridge and its environs.

Lucy Perks - blood pressure now coming to the boil! Lucy was portrayed as bright and energetic all the way through school. She went off to university and then we got a report that she had failed her finals but it was all OK, she was getting married and going off to New Zealand. Why did they throw in the bit about her failing her finals? It was completely unnecessary to the story and not even remotely likely. Debbie throwing in the towel part-way through her degree many years earlier was just about credible - failing your finals and not bothering to re-take is not.

And breathe...

ppeatfruit · 25/08/2014 17:15

Mimsy TA is about normal people who HAVE to do normal MOR jobs and drop out irrationally, no one can force their dcs to stay at college or be high flyers, we can't all be that way . IMO it's one thing the SWs have right Grin

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 25/08/2014 17:35

Is Alice the only one with a degree then?

I don't even want highly educated - just successful. I like te idea of Hayley setting up a nursery!

Even fallons enterprise needs significant input from her love interest and Kirsty allsopp

Is ta getting a little too guest appearance heavy? I mean, two in the space of three months?

Selks · 25/08/2014 19:05

Mowgli!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/08/2014 19:08

Mowgli? Someone is winding Lynda up, surely?

Selks · 25/08/2014 19:16

Poor Lynda Grin

GypsyFloss · 25/08/2014 19:17

Nice call from someone upthread about " it's a sin" as a background to Rotaboy and Lizzie.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 25/08/2014 19:21

Oh that was fun!

Mowgli indeed...

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 25/08/2014 19:24

Mowgli! Snigger.

ppeat, I'm quite happy with the idea that not everybody is going to be an academic high flier. But Ambridge children seem amazingly behind the rest of the country in grasping that even quite ordinary jobs nowadays need a degree.

Panzee · 25/08/2014 19:42

Oh I loved that episode, except for perhaps the last 60 seconds. Mowgli is genius, and getting Chris to wax lyrical about The Jungle Book, inspired!

LillianGish · 25/08/2014 20:09

Mongolia has to be a wind up surely? So Lillian and Lynda saw Roy buying the locket ...

Selks · 25/08/2014 20:28

Yes, and no doubt one of them will be asking Hayley how much she likes the locket that Roy bought for her.....

Panzee · 25/08/2014 20:39

I think Lil will spot Lizzie wearing it. And feel unable to say anything because of her and boring Paul.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 25/08/2014 21:51

Isn't a locket a bit old fashioned? Did he put a lock of his hair in it? Or a photo of his ripped torso? This storyline is soooooo getting on my nerves

Now the super grandchild story is a good one

PipecleanerMakeover · 25/08/2014 23:08

He put a scrap of polyester in the locket, along with a single tear...

The new mobile site hates me! I've had plenty of witty, insightful comments to make recently and it hasn't let me post any of them :(
