Will this thread make it to the wedding? Will it outlive Tony?

Wrt Ruth again, I also had a good friend who was told after a hospital ultrasound and bleeding that she'd lost her baby- the scan was wrong! That must be very rare and so most listeners would find it far fetched (but you know, clutching at straws and all that)

GypsyFloss · 30/03/2014 18:56

I know of someone who bled and had lost a twin in the first 3 months. The pregnancy carried to term with a healthy infant.
I'm not so sure it is as rare as that but certainly one would expect Ruth to be popping along to the Early Pregnancy unit for confirmation one way or another. This pregnancy could equally have been an ectopic one and that too would need medical attention.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 30/03/2014 19:19

I can't find certified stats but this is from an individual blog:

'as many as 1/8th of pregnancies begin as twins...up to 20% of early detected twin pregnancies will miscarry one foetus'

& that's just those that are detected early; I'm sure it's much higher overall. it's more common than generally appreciated.

So you never know...

Oooh. Forgot to say, my mum went to Birmingham library to meet the cast event. David (Tim Bentick) was great by all accounts, stayed around chatting for ages after the Q&A session. The actor who plays Helen was there too, but was tight lipped over the Helen/Rob situation.

Given that the Archers doesn't pay enough to live on, some of the cast have real jobs as well. Susan Carter is an academic, Robert Snell is a GP and ALice Carter works as a children's nanny.

There was a lot of discussion about how to discuss a younger audience. Which as someone who started listening at 19, I think when they try and write stories that they think will attract a younger listener-ship (all of Ambridge Extra) they get it hideously, hideously wrong.

Hello. Long time lurker unlurking here - I love reading these threads but normally don't listen to the omnibus till later in the week. Was fertilising on my tractor today so got to catch up early!!

I quite liked the stag episode but not so keen on the hen one. I have to say, I don't get why tom is so bad?! (I know it's a controversial view, please don't hate me!!) if my dad did to me what tony did to him I'd be livid. Love the whole hellin and rob storyline. Had a little tear at Ruth. Surprised they finished the story so quickly though, surely there's more too it.

This thread is so great - I often laugh out loud to it!

OddFodd · 30/03/2014 19:54

I love that Susan Carter is an academic in real life :o

Jill is horribly over-invested in the pregnancy/Ruth/David thing all in all isn't she? It's everso slightly creepy

Halsall · 30/03/2014 20:13

Imagine going to your GP for something quite personal and realising you were being examined by Robett Snell!

Looks as though the Ruth storyline has been dealt with definitively, at least as far as lingering hopes for a last-minute pregnancy surprise are concerned. Tbh I'm rather puzzled as to the point of this whole plot line - unless Roooth is going to suffer from depression. I guess she's been in a turmoil emotionally for a while so I doubt she's going to bounce back that quickly.

GypsyFloss · 30/03/2014 20:38

I would love Robert as my GP , he has such a kind and reassuring voice. As for Radio Carter being an academic , I'd be expecting her to break into " Ohhh, Neeyul " and telling me gossipy stories.

The whole pregnancy thing seems pointless . I wonder if the whole storyline got shunted about a bit when they decided to flood Ambridge months after everywhere had suffered and perhaps some of the episodes have been cut?

Northernlurker · 30/03/2014 20:55

Having listened tonight I think the miscarriage storyline has been done quite well. There's lots of focus on Ruth but we are clearly going to hear more about David's feelings to and that's a very helpful dimension to show.

JollyGolightly · 30/03/2014 21:14

I agree. Having been through it a few times I can identify with R and D each trying to protect the other from their own sadness, and the over investment of the older generation too.

So grateful that we haven't had to hear Pip.

WhatSheSaid · 30/03/2014 21:38

Gah! Missed the episode due to your clocks changing (am not in UK). Will have to listen later.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 30/03/2014 22:23

Good to hear Kirsty's reaction to Rob's hilarious antics on the stag Hmm - presumably she will try to pass this on to Helen (but get nowhere because of Rob being so kind, perfect & wonderful)

Jolene unimpressed too...he is going to get what he what he deserves, eventually. Hope it doesn't take too long

Gypsy, it seems as if several SLs have been cut & shut because of the ludicrous late ongoing OTT Ambridge monsoon. I reckon Ruth's pregnancy was a result of Budapest & should have happened a month or more ago (but otherwise has probably developed as intended)

TheShimmeringPussycat · 30/03/2014 23:40

I don't think monsoon is ludicrous - Nigel falling off the roof was ludicrous - but as Borsetshire is somewhere near Worcester and the flooding is and will remain a major issue for England, TA does need to reflect this. Unless the SWs are writing the scripts the day before, the weather will always trip them up, very occasionally.

cheminotte · 31/03/2014 07:05

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to tell you Pussycat (blatantly marking place)

The monsoon was ridiculous. I live in Borsetshire, I should know. We had weeks and weeks and weeks of rain that was ignored. Then TA put it in a SL and ... the rain pretty much cleared up overnight. It's not the first time they have been caught out by weather.
For a farming-related programme, they are woeful in how they cope with one of farming's major concerns.

GypsyFloss · 31/03/2014 09:11

I agree.

unitarian · 31/03/2014 10:27

Note to scriptwriters - I really don't want another depression storyline in The Archers.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2014 13:43

No - I think it will be a working-through of grief. Miscarrage is a very common event which too often people are just expected to shrug off - especially men. I don't see this as a non-story at all.

AskBasil · 31/03/2014 17:45

I hope Horrible Rob story will go on for years, just as this sort of relationship does in real life

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2014 17:53

I wonder what Kenton and Jolene will do by way of revenge.

unitarian · 31/03/2014 18:05

I can rationalise it that way, Errol, but it felt like a weight rolling over me while listening last night.
I suppose the programme's ability to touch on such real-life events is part of its appeal though.

kernowal · 31/03/2014 19:08

Just caught up on last night before tuning in this evening. JD's kitchen is now starting to get on my wick. It must be so difficult for her to rustle up a quiche. Stick a jacket spud in the microwave & let them get on with it.
