Hello you two :o

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 19/01/2014 19:44

There was a thread on here only a few weeks ago about how people feel when money is split very unevenly between children/grand children.

I think the majority who it had happened to were very upset by it as it felt they were less loved than their siblings. Surely Peggy would have thought of that?

OddFodd · 19/01/2014 19:47

Tony's children are being rewarded for his principles; even though they don't share them

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 19/01/2014 19:47

Or one could see it as Peggy

  1. Rewarding the Bridge Farm tribe for their vision, determination and dogged bravery.

  2. Comforting said tribe for their terrible, terrible loss.

And really - it gives Tony and Pat a strong incentive to look after Peggy. Once she's gone they will not enjoy having to go cap in hand to Tom every time they want to split a plunchion or fuddle a grork.

Whatever will Brenda say?

WhatSheSaid · 19/01/2014 19:47

Wasn't there an inheritance dispute storyline with Phil 'n' Jill's dcs a few years ago?

Something about Elizabeth wanting her share of the farm early. I can't remember the details, does anyone else?

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 19/01/2014 19:50

But Pat an Tony hardly ever seem to look after Peggy - as someone already said, it's all Jennydarling and Fagash Lil.

LondonMother · 19/01/2014 19:50

Absolutely brilliant from the point of view of shaking up the family. Thank you, SWs!

Lilian is independently wealthy because her second husband, Ralph, owned most of Ambridge. Assuming she hasn't sunk too much into Amside, she is very well off indeed. Probably more loaded than Brian and Jennifer.

This has the capacity to upset everybody except Tom! I am delighted.

And what a treat to have so many members of the senior Archer branch in one room together. Most of the best actors and characters are to be found there.

Happy, happy, happy! This bodes well for the new editor.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2014 19:51

Yes, I can't remember the exact details. Of course farms are particularly awkward because usually they need to be kept intact to be viable. David will have some serious thinking to do in the future with at least two of his kids already looking seriously interested in farming - surely in the 21st century we don't assume that the son rather than the daughter should inherit?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 19:52

there is fair & there is equal. sometimes they are the same..

I was somewhat peed off when my dad left 50% to my younger brother, who had sponged off him for 20-odd years, but would be homeless once the house was sold, & 25% each to older brother & me

older brother & SIL had already inherited shedloads from her parents & have massive house, while we have small house & still had relatively large mortgage (& no inheritance from ILs)

BUT otoh it was my dad's estate. he could have left it to a cats' home. nobody is entitled to anything. (except Dame Celia Molestrangler, apparently)

ErrolTheDragon · 19/01/2014 19:53

But Pat an Tony hardly ever seem to look after Peggy - as someone already said, it's all Jennydarling and Fagash Lil.

Because they're daughters. Blimey, we could construct some good threads for the Feminism board!

WhatSheSaid · 19/01/2014 19:54

What were the two hardships early in Lillian's life that Peggy referred to? Did her husband die young? Or did she just run out of gin one day?

WhatSheSaid · 19/01/2014 19:56

Oh and I love the bit Peggu said about what a good choice JennyDarling had made in Brian. Er, yes, with all those affairs, including the one where he fathered another child and then brought said child to be brought up by her.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 19/01/2014 19:58

Too right Errol!
This is a very old fashioned decision by Peggy. Does she have form on that? I got the impression she was quite a modern minded type, not a traditionalist.

PseudoBadger · 19/01/2014 19:58

"split a plunchion or fuddle a grork"

This will be a future thread title!!

OP posts:
TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 19:59

Peggy was only talking about money though, not lurve (or integrity)

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 19/01/2014 19:59

What if Tony and Pat sell out to Megacorp Inc tomorrow for megabucks and retire to Ibiza? What then, Pegs?

NorthernLurker · 19/01/2014 20:05

Lilian's first husband died very young in Canada then she married James Bellamy who also died youngish as has been said. So yes she did have a bloody awful time. As did Jenny - getting pregnant and keeping her baby in 60s Ambridge. Tony though has always been the spoilt golden child - explains a lot about him. I can't believe Peggy has ignored Adam and Debbie's predicament. They are not Brian's children. Their father Roger is utterly feckless. They are in danger of inheriting very little if Brian decides his ONLY SON Ruari needs it all...........I think Jennifer is certainly well aware of that and i'm sure it will be mentioned.....
I think this is basically a moralistic decision by Peggy. Tony is the only one of her children with a, as far as she knows, straightforward marriage. She's favouring him because of it. Lets hope nobody tells her about Pat's affair with the lecturer......

CarolineKnappShappey · 19/01/2014 20:06

Can 't get I player to work!

Please please, what happened?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 20:09

I thought the Home Farm inheritance thing was worked out to a certain extent when Kate & Alice got cottages & Adam & Debbie got some share in the farm?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 20:10

but this is certainly shaping up for another row down the line when Myson is old enough to take an interest Grin

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 20:11

Tony being the spoilt golden child must have happened before I started listening (mid-80s) - I don't remember that at all!

WhatSheSaid · 19/01/2014 20:13

Peggy gathered all her children and their partners at her house to "pick mementoes" to remember Jack by.

She told them she has been left a bit by Jack but Hazel has the most.

She has decided to let the family know now how she will leave her estate, to avoid future surprises. Jenny and
Lillian are, in her eyes, financially stable so get nothing. Tony and Pat have struggled more but she is not leaving anything to them...instead Helen and Henry get Peggy's house and Golden Boy Tom gets EVERYTHING else.

Cue shocked silence from everyone else.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 19/01/2014 20:15

Pat had an affair? O.o .... That makes her slightly more appealing. Did she decide to stay with Moany Tony after a lot of passive aggressive martyred sighing?

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 19/01/2014 20:18

Btw I genuinely thought this family meeting was going to be along the lines of, 'Hazel has got almost all of it, now what can we do to help and protect the village shop, the Grundys and any other tenants involved?'

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/01/2014 20:21

that's what I was hoping too, Somewhere Sad

bugger!

\link{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Archers_characters\this wiki page of Archers characters,} though somewhat out of date, is very educational

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 19/01/2014 20:24

Delighted I'm sure PseudoGrin

Oh I hope Adam doesn't take this badly. He's in a very precarious position. (Northern Did Roger T-M adopt Adam? I remember that when he got back in touch he was only showering his bio-d Debbie with cars and money...) Jenny will have to be fierce when it comes to making sure he gets his proper share of Home Farm.
