New thread for the beginning of the pheasant season.

OP posts:

RnRN You were right! Will and Ed falling out over dogs. Sad

IndridCold · 19/11/2013 21:30

Sthing It took me a long, long time, it started when they had Darrell doing up the house of that old couple, and has gradually got worse and worse. It seemed nonsensical that they needed to introduce three new (and not even very interesting) characters to come up with a story, when they had loads of familiar people that we hadn't heard from for ages.

They have taken familiar inhabitants and made them behave totally out of character. They really have tried to turn it into Eastenders. The list is endless, Paul and Lilian, the assault on Adam and the Brookfield arson (more 'new' characters), Adam's betrayal of Ian, Kathy and Martin at the golf club, the Grundys suing GG, and the last straw has been Rob and Helen. If I wanted Eastenders then I would watch Eastenders, I liked TA because it was boring familiar.

I feel very sad and I do miss it - but I miss the old Archers, not the crap that passes for TA at the moment. I just no longer recognise this programme that I used to enjoy Sad.

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 19/11/2013 22:12

Agree totally.Sad

For myself, I can put up with the ridiculous blockbuster story lines (excluding SATTC obviously...) but the relentless, random character assassination is on the cusp of intolerable.

But I'm convinced that if I ever stopped listening the BBC would find out and take it as confirmation that the old listenership has died out and it's definitely time to concentrate eclusively on the youth vote.

IndridCold · 19/11/2013 22:33

I'm afraid they think that already. Getting new, young listeners is all they care about; I just don't know what us older people are supposed to watch/listen to between now, and when we die Smile.

CuttedUpPear · 19/11/2013 22:33

I have the same birthday as Brine.

Just saying Wink

ps Who the feck is Patrick?

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 19/11/2013 23:16

Patrick is a mate of Kirsty's - something to do with wildlife? He used to be a silent.

ppeatfruit · 20/11/2013 08:41

Oh Indrid have you listened to Ambridge Extra?? if you think TA is going down the plughole that would really confirm it!!

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 20/11/2013 09:00

Happy Birthday CuttedUpPear!Cake

This from Brian's entry on the Archers website:

"Sister-in-law Lilian's distress at Matt's predicament merely irritated him."

shows just how little they seem to know about the characters. Brian was incredibly supportive and concerned for Lilian during the running away to South America episode.

And what on earth is the point of all he mystery regarding his birthday?

IndridCold · 20/11/2013 09:06

ppeat Oh God, Ambridge Extra! I did give it a try when it first started but swiftly realised that it was not for me.

I did enjoy reading the ingenious summaries of Matt and Lilian's escapade on the other MN thread tho' Smile.

ppeatfruit · 20/11/2013 09:31

Sthing there are quite a few people who don't like to broadcast Grin their ages though aren't there?

lljkk · 20/11/2013 19:06

Bike, lights, josh, Jill...

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2013 19:08

Got off lightly there Jill!

GypsyFloss · 20/11/2013 19:08

Oh no we didn't see that ( pardon the pun) one coming at all.

Pilcrow · 20/11/2013 19:12

Quite, Gypsy

Indrid, I too really hit rock-bottom with the never-ending Darrell/floorboard saga. I felt as though I'd been trapped in an endlessly-repeating loop in which the same doomed storyline was played out again and again and again, like some avant garde experimental drama but crap, and with Borsetshire accents

JollyGolightly · 20/11/2013 20:18

I almost stopped listening during the Darryl/floorboard storyline. Then I had another baby and was pretty much housebound thanks to snow and infant children. The 7pm slot made a very useful goal for having put the big one down and giving the wee one his last breastfeed before bed, so TA became a very important part of my life again!

I totally agree that there are too many old familiar characters lying fallow, and that the 'Enderising has got silly.

However,I do remember my mother-in-law, not long after I first met her 15 years ago, writing to the BBC to complain about Things Happening In the Archers. So perhaps it's not such a recent thing.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/11/2013 20:21

Oh oh oh! How did I not know thatthere was an Archers thread. I am ridiculously excited by this and may have to lie down

I missed tonight. Wsa giving DP a lift to the station so he could go out on the lash in London and he was chatting away in the car. He has a lot to learn Angry

IndridCold · 20/11/2013 21:26

I also find it totally unbelievable that no-one has built a wind or solar farm, you'd think that Borsetshire Land would have been on that one in a flash. It would make a very nice addition to Brine's bank balance! There would surely be someone wanting to build more houses in the village as well.

Both of these are pretty pressing issues where I live - certainly more interesting than floorboards...

TheSilveryPussycat · 20/11/2013 22:20

I am always disappointed that we don't hear more about the day-to-day problems of the stables or the vet practice (apart from Ketamine Jazza and that was a while ago)

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2013 22:33

There would surely be someone wanting to build more houses in the village as well.

Borsetshire Land built Grange Spinney

I can't see BL being interested in wind or solar unless for very sound business reasons ... you'd have thought with all those indoor cows that there might be scope for some energy from their various outputs though!

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2013 22:38

Oh... I'd forgotten they wanted to build a big anaerobic digester ..forgotten what exactly happened...

JollyGolightly · 20/11/2013 22:40

I do wonder if Brahn is shaping up for another bout of philandering. He's taken 70 quite badly and will need to prove his virility somehow.

TheSilveryPussycat · 20/11/2013 22:43

I've been thinking the exact same thing jolly - late-life crisis sort of thing Grin Pity the Archers is before the watershed - I can think of an interesting plot line Confused Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 20/11/2013 22:57

Go on, tell us ... the watershed doesn't apply to radio anyway.

IndridCold · 20/11/2013 23:32

Grange Spinney was years ago. Planning restrictions have been massively reduced 18 months ago and it is a complete free for all in the countryside since then.

I live in a tiny village in protected landscape in the arse end of nowhere, and we have been fighting a development of new homes for over a year now. A desirable village like Ambridge would definitely have developers hovering over it like hawks...

TheSilveryPussycat · 21/11/2013 01:11

It involves Brian's manhood and him going Confused Blush. OTOH Jenny seems happy enough.
