New thread!

OP posts:
guineapiglet · 07/08/2013 20:34

Hi all, another old lag here :) Great new thread. - been listening since the late 80s - I was beginning to think it was just me getting fed up with dull story lines and characters who have mind altering character changes - so haven't been too attentive for the past couple of weeks... sounds like I haven't missed much, but it is part of family life and ritual during the week!

In the old days there used to be real villains, and I was really hoping this horrendous mega dairy would result in some real villainy taking place - I really CBA with Rob, and the whole Rob/Hellin thing is rather sad, really wish she could find a suitable mate with equal cheese making skills -

there are lots of folk who we don't hear from/about for months on end, for example where are Alice and Chris,? - what happened to Pat and Tony's long sought after Grandchild,? Where are the Vicar and Usha? Why do Debbie and Kate never come home any more? and when are they going to acknowledge dear Jack has now passed on....? Feel it could do with a bit of a shake up and some decent SWs to be more consistent.

TheSilverySoothsayer · 07/08/2013 21:16
(sounds like the original I think?) Doom Music: A bit at the very beginning, then at about 1:40 and again at 2:38 or so - this latter is the Actual DM, I think.

Anyone else hate Uncle Tom's little homilies at the beginning of the omni in the old days? And how they cut snippets from scenes played during the week to make them fit into an hour? (It wasn't always 6 epis making 1hr 15m)

Bluestocking · 07/08/2013 21:24

I am loving Lilian's discomfort at working with a proper assistant after all that time with "she's got a degree in PR and Marketing" Brenda.
Also rather loving shag-and-run Rob Titchydick. Poor old Hellqueen.

LondonMother · 07/08/2013 21:25

I adored Uncle Tom's maunderings, Silvery. I also loved trying to spot the cuts (yes, I am a saddo). It's one less reason to listen to the omnibus now, knowing that it will be identical with the evening transmissions.

TheSilverySoothsayer · 07/08/2013 21:34

Now you come to mention it, I also rather enjoyed playing spot the cuts Blush

I think people have moaned about the Archers for as long as it's been on, maybe? I gave up listening after Nigel was sacrificed, in protest - but it's crept back into my life again.

Does anyone remember a strange story-line where Eddie boxed in the alarm clock or something?

Somethingyesterday · 07/08/2013 21:54

London You have written my post! I also loved Tom's Sunday homily and not only tried to spot the cuts but during the week tried to work out what was filler and wouldn't be heard in Sunday. (Sadder than all?)

BoreOfWhabylon · 07/08/2013 22:03

cuttingpicassostoenails I will send you a pm revealing my ML alter ego!

Do start listening again - it is so much fun dissecting TA with likeminded folk and there are plenty here and no mad modding.

The Blessed Cheesequeen has just shagged a married man; can't remember if St Shulurrgh has been up to anything recently (I may have glazed over), Sod is still dead and J'leeen and Kenton are getting married, Jeck is not dead (yet) but still in the Twilight Home for Bewildered Gentlefolk!

TheSilverySoothsayer · 07/08/2013 22:07

now you come to mention it, Something, I too tried to spot cuts ahead. Sometimes they had little bits of interesting info among the waffle - a bit like Amex, I imagine, only dotted through the actual programme. (except Amex seems to have revealed stuff that should have been on TA)

I do have a life, honestly! Wink

Somethingyesterday · 07/08/2013 23:22

little bits of interesting info among the waffle

Yes, yes. Can't remember who it was on the (beautiful) previous thread who made an interesting point about how much richer an environment Ambridge was before BBC producers started competing to see just how few actors they could manage with in any one episode. But the bits that were cut on Sundays did add to the mix. It was the apparent randomness that charmed the ear.

And there was a great feeling of superiority if one was a proper listener, not just a Sunday driver, because you had extra info....

I make no claims to a RL. (Not one that's as much fun to dissect anyway.)

JessieMcJessie · 08/08/2013 05:09

Well, silent movies on the Radio. I have genuinely heard it all now. I do love how Josh digs at Pip at every possible opportunity though- he reminds me very much of my own DB...

Wonder what's up with Elizabeth?

LondonMother · 08/08/2013 07:21

Something, are you me?

Jessie, I loved the silent movies on the radio. That's one of the mad things I rather like about TA. I'm hoping what's up with Elizabeth is a vague discomfort that she realises tonight is the voice of conscience saying that it is her sisterly duty to give Kenton and Jolene a booking at Lower Loxley for their wedding with no charge or some nominal charge as her present. It has to happen tonight as otherwise I might do myself a mischief shouting at the radio every time they talk about wedding venues without mentioning that Kenton's sister runs the premier wedding venue in Borsetshire.

JessieMcJessie · 08/08/2013 07:51

Londonmother, I didn't say I didn't like it Wink! I actually enjoyed thinking of the actors and probably the producers and directors and tea ladies in the studio trying out ways of saying "aaah" and laughing to sound like a village hall packed house.

Agreed re Kenton and Jolene and LL- pretty sure that it would be in keeping with their characters at least to have raised it, even if only between themselves before agreeing it was a bit cheeky to ask.

Somethingyesterday · 08/08/2013 08:12

Grin @ London Perhaps your long-lost non-identical twin?

Loved the surreal silent film business. It caused somersaults in my brain.

Re Elizabeth: didn't he say "I'll sort it"? So not her love life - unless Ifty has been misbehaving on Facebook. And not her health either. Something to do with the planning permission? Or one of the small suddenly remembering that Uncle D pushed Daddy off the roof?

HarlotOTara · 08/08/2013 10:11

Anyone else think Kathy is being set up for a manager's job at Grey Gables?
Jessie, agree about the use of LL

HomelessAngua · 08/08/2013 10:42

I thought that HarlotOTara, would suit everyone, that Ambridge job fairy should arrive very soon.

OliviaIsOffTheGinMumsnet · 08/08/2013 10:43

@JessieMcJessie

Well, silent movies on the Radio. I have genuinely heard it all now.
I was thinking that....
TheSilverySoothsayer · 08/08/2013 11:15

It seems clear that Kathy herself has been poorly managed - and why did the general manager leave? She is unmotivated and at the stage of life where she is thinking - so what have I done? and feeling mid-life disappointment. Obviously, when she is enthusiastic about something, she can do a v good job, and the impending job at GG could be the making of her, plus some good opportunity for going head to head with Linda, I expect Hmm Confused Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/08/2013 11:57

But Kathy has been unmotivated and feeling mid-life disappointment for the last 15 years at least.

She sucks the life out of herself and anyone who strays into her orbit.

TheSilverySoothsayer · 08/08/2013 12:43

BoreOf I have to admit you have a point there... So will she have a personality transplant along with a job transplant, do you think?

Theas18 · 08/08/2013 14:21

Radio silent movies..... Had us all in fits - even the non archers fans!

OliviaIsOffTheGinMumsnet · 08/08/2013 15:45

@TheSilverySoothsayer

Obviously, when she is enthusiastic about something, she can do a v good job
.... REALLY? Seems like she blagged one poxy wheel of cheese for the raffle (from bezzie mate Pat) and then got Neil to do the chairs, PAtrick did the music What else did she do?
TheSilverySoothsayer · 08/08/2013 16:34

Olivia! Blush

Although I wrote that post with a sort of wry humour, even with 6 epis instead of 5 we don't know everything she's done. Obviously, a lot of delegating. And a lot of talking to people by phone during working hours (what else is there to do, anyway, as the golf club is hardly bustling? Oh I know, she could think of ways to improve trade...)

In the curious logic of the Archers's SWs thinking, however, my post stands Wink

TheSilverySoothsayer · 08/08/2013 16:36

trying to be too clever *Archers SWs' thinking
