Oh God, I've been dreading this coming, thought it might be avoided - why why why WHY did David tell her???

Lol at you all.Grin

I just can't see the Roy/Lizzy liaison. If you are going to go for a bit of rough, don't go for one that has traded in his manly heritage for a soft-handed career as a hotel flunkie (and one-time, miraculously forgotten, violent racism). Anyway, she won't find consolation in sex; she will find it in hate and busy-ness.

Wordwork · 24/05/2011 08:38

She will be a kind of Mrs Havisham, paralysed by bitterness in her decaying mansion.

Hmm, Roy is Kate's age isn't he, so 33/34? And Lizzie must be well into her 40s?

But unless Vanessa Whitburn is really going for it, the class divide won't be breached, I reckon.

Did anyone else cringe at Susan's oh-so-ironic failure to recognize the irony of Cranford as book club choice, by the way?

I thought that scene took its cue from Shakespeare - the 'mechanicals' providing some comic relief. Neil got the irony!

JoanofArgos · 24/05/2011 09:49

grimma, yes, Susan in particular is often used as 'chorus', or 'low character' along with Vicky. I find it cringe-makingly awkwardly done, though.

R4 · 24/05/2011 09:54

Lizzie was born in 1967, Roy in 1978. I don't think a liaison is likely but I am worrying about this brand new car they keep chirruping on about - is David going to be run over by Hayley/Roy, unused to the controls/power of it? Or is one of Jamie's mates going to go joy-riding (with a child seat in the back: ver coolHmmGrin)

As I said, like Shakespeare! Grin

What did the banner say anyway??Confused I missed that in all the hoo-ha (or should that be har har)

JoanofArgos · 24/05/2011 10:08

It said 'Careful: This Roof May Be Slippery In Bad Weather' Grin

ThisIsJustASagaNow · 24/05/2011 10:13

Grin Maybe they were advertising an all you can eat roast for a fiver. That'd lower the tone alright at LL wouldn't it?

Bang on observation about the 'chorus'. Very true.

ppeatfruit · 24/05/2011 11:36

Lol at the 'greek chorus' characters IKWYM but it's still soo much better than East Enders attempt at 'comedy' (I don't watch it now but i doubt it's improved).

carocaro · 24/05/2011 12:21

I live in Cranford, well Knutsford where Mrs Gaskill based the novel, I've emailed the producers about the "book club coming on a Cranford Walking Tour" But they never ever leave Ambridge, a la Truman Style show, Borchester's a stretch for them. We joke her that we sometimes feel the need to 'leave the confines of Cranford' as it says in the book!

Northernlurker · 24/05/2011 15:44

The banner said 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the blissfully happy Pargetter Family, oh what could possibly ever go wrong in our charmed lives' as far as I recall........

squeaver · 24/05/2011 15:56

Oh, I am convinced something's going to happen between Roy and Lizzie.

Lolol at the wording on the banner

squeaver · 24/05/2011 16:01

Also, in years to come, Freddie will end up on crack and Lily will end up on the game. And it will ALL BE DAVID'S FAULT....!

Actually, I think Lizzie's affair with Roy will mean they don't keep their eyes on the business and LL will have to be sold to Matt.

Northernlurker · 24/05/2011 16:05

I think it would be jolly hard to sell LL. It sounds like Nigel's will put it in to some sort of Trust - that lets Lizzie do what she likes with it but she still has trustees? Hmm Don't really get that - why didn't he just leave it straight to her? There's no inheritance tax payable on spouse to spouse inheritance anyway and then Lizzie should make a will putting it in trust for the twins. That was all a bit odd imo.

squeaver · 24/05/2011 17:37

Oh, missed the will episode.

missthing · 24/05/2011 21:48

I think, what with the constant references to LL being strapped for cash, Lizzie will sell her 1/4 of the farm, causing all sorts of problems for d&r - poss even forcing them to sell the farm, as not enough cash to buy Lizzie out.

PrincessFiorimonde · 24/05/2011 21:55

I've also wondered about Lizzie and Roy having a fling, or even just a furtive fumble. Resulting in much guilt, etc. all round.

Missthing, that's a great idea!

Northernlurker · 24/05/2011 22:17

I don't think Lizzie has a share of the farm anymore. David and Ruth scooped the lot with Lizzie and Shula getting some cash.

JoanofArgos · 25/05/2011 09:01

what is it with popcorn on the Archers at the moment?

GrimmaTheNome · 25/05/2011 09:02

popcorn?

TeaAndSeagulls · 25/05/2011 09:14

Love this thread Grin

JoanofArgos · 25/05/2011 09:16

Yes, Ruth tried to make David stay in by saying Josh (or Ben) was going to make toffee popcorn, and Elizabeth was banging on about popcorn last night as well!
