Worth getting a second hand pram that's scratched?

Hey all! I've found the pram I want (mamas and papas strada) and I've managed to find it second hand from a company that refurbishes them so I know it's clean :)

Only thing is, from the pictures it has quite a lot of scratches on the handle and chassis. Just wondering really how scratched prams get? I know I should buy the cheaper option (it would save us £200 overall and I would buy the car seat new seperately) and I think I just need someone to tell me to stop being silly and buy the cheaper one!

Definitely buy the cheaper one. No one is going to examine your pram for scratches and the baby certainly won't care! Use the money saved on something else for the baby or else for you/the baby and DP to have a nice night away somewhere once they are settled.

We had a second hand pram. No one would have known it was second hand and really no one cares. I went through a whole panic about 'should I buy a new one as why should the baby have second hand' etc etc...I was glad I chose as I did in the end, we used the extra money for a nice few nights away in an air b and b when dd1 was about 6 months old-it was her first time seeing the sea and it was just the ticket :)

I would get the second hand one too. Your baby is very likely to smear food, throw up etc on a pram/travel system. You will also REALLY stress out about where you leave your pram if you’ve paid full whack for it. It’s not worth the stress.

The pram I'm using for my second was from my first 4 years prior. It has scratches etc but is clean and wasn't cheap so I couldn't see a single reason to get another one.
I suppose it depends on your lifestyle but we do riverside walks etc so it gets pretty muddy and obviously as they get older they may eat/drink in there too

My cosatto pram is scratched up and the name rubbing off the frame from getting it in and out the boot a lot (used to have a tiny car) I also used it for 2 babies so had it 4 years so it's well used and it certainly looks it! Paid £900 for the travel system (which I now regret!) I wish I got a second hand one!' I say do it.

Is the frame chrome? I bought a second hand pram with a black frame. Touched it up with black nail varnish!

Thank you guys so much! Just the reassurance I needed that no one will care! Going to go for the second hand one and put the money saved straight into savings for a night away later :)

I also bought second hand many moons ago, I ended up selling it to a friend down the line. Go for it, you won’t regret it 🤗

I would definitely go second hand BUT I’d expect to save more than £200 by going second hand.

Also agree, particularly if it's noticeably scratched. Are there Facebook groups for mamas &papas prams? I'm in bugaboo Facebook groups and it's really helpful to gauge what typical prices are to check you're not overpaying

If it's only saving you £200 with no warranty etc I wouldn't bother.

I say "only", £200 is a lot of money to me but I think the warranty etc you get is worth it with the new one.

When are you due? We got our Mama's & Papas Ocarro bundle with everything £400 off in the Black Friday sale. Are there any big sales due to be on before you're due?

@elm26 Don't get me wrong £200 is a lot to me too but I agree with what you said! I've managed to find a discount code too so only 160 odd more expensive than second hand :)

I'm due 22nd June, was hoping the Easter sales would be good but I think I've found a better deal anyway - on affordablebabycare.co.uk if anyone's used it before? Also cheap on trendy baby.

You might be able to remove some of the scratches with T-cut car polish used for the same thing on cars.

See I have a cosatto (£450 new inc car seat) and used it for 2 children but would probably buy a 'new' (but second hand) pram for a third. After 2 children it's just very tatty and a bit rickety. We did keep using the buggy part each time til 2.5-3 years though. My point being OP to consider how decent you think the pram will be after 2 or 3 children if your planning on having more, because if it won't last that long you might as well enjoy the benefit of a new one with your first. I'm a big second-hand shopper but you use a pram/buggy daily, so you want to like it, and it gets hammered. I do suspect Cosattos are a bit crappier than other brands which might last longer.

Definitely buy second hand. And if you get it and it isn’t quite what you want when you start using it or as baby grows and your needs change you can sell it and buy something else second hand until you get it right. They often hold their value.

Doesn’t matter at all about scratches but agree, is it definitely a good enough deal? Have a look on Facebook to see what they typically go for.

I agree with everyone here. Buy second hand but... expect a bigger discount. Fb groups and ebay used to be the places to look but that was about 10 years ago.

If the saving is only £160 /200 , buy new as you will get the warranty and also it will likely have a better resale value when you’ve done with it . It would need to be about half the normal price or less to make refurbished worthwhile for me .

Yes, get the reconditioned one.

You'll probably scratch it yourself from time to time!

Buying secondhand is a hugely positive thing to do
