Where to live in London?

msrisotto · 22/02/2010 17:06

We don't particularly want to move but OH's job is taking him/us to London, he really doesn't want to live in London but I don't mind.

I'd prefer to live nearer north London as it's closer to my family, I have visited people in north London and know I like Brent cross shopping centre but that is really the extent of my knowledge!
Alternatively, somewhere about 1 hours commute to Euston kind of area?
Any ideas? Our budget would be around 4 - 450.

or 3 bed flat also in central village location

Don;t forget - not only is Kew on dstrict line 25 mins to victoria but also on London overground which goes via Willesden junction (15 mins) to Hampstead and highgate etc.

Also if you're into villagey and green lovely places - herts and also essex is a well kept secret. It's not all romford on a friday night. Most of it is huge green fields v pretty. Not sure about the transport links though again not my area.

Kewcumber, bless you for trying but i just don't think i'm going to find a house with garage/parking in budget in Kew, fabulous though it is!

Humph

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:20

loujalou are you thinking of letchworth with no pubs? Welwyn has pubs in the town centre. Not many I'll give you that. I think letchworth actually has none.

If it's pubs you're after st albans may be the place for you - it is one of those that claims to have more per square inch than anywhere else type thing.

barnet used to have loads of pubs - it was one of those coach house horse change places on route to london - but loads have shut in the last 10 years

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:20

ROFL @ kewcumber

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:25

Barnet used to be a good place to hang out. New Barnet has a couple of nice pubs and there is a new Italian cake place which is lush.

WGC has not many pubs for the size of place. Honestly there are more places to go out in my village than in WGC but then we don't have John Lewis.... It is lovely - though I heard a horrid rumour they might close it.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:31

No they aren't going to close john lewis at welwyn! They can't. No that can't be true.

I'm not going to tell my mum it will be the end of her.

When did you live in barnet lou?

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:33

TBH if your DH is going to work in euston I would be looking for somewhere with direct transport to euston - changing in the rush hour in town is a nightmare and kind of ruins your morning IMO. Live somewhere a bit further out with a direct link and you get a seat and the paper and all is fine.

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:36

3 years ago I lived in Barnet. Also worked there.

It was only a horrid rumour about JLs I am sure it won't happen. Am thinking I might have to move if it does that or go to Milton Keynes which is great for shopping. And it has direct trains to Euston. Also, its supposed to be good for going out. Though not been out there myself.

If you can get to Kings Cross which you can from Herts then commuting to Euston will be easy as its only a short walk.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 16:52

Where did you work?

I have lived here for donkeys years

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 16:58

Endeavour House for Mortgage Express. Unfortunately it no longer exists. I was brought in Enfield but went to sixth form in Finchley so know Barnet from back in the day

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 17:14

I used to work there...

You would know JF in legal and maybe DP, also AR who was a team leader.

I really do know Barnet very well

Did you used to drink in the Tav?

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 17:15

Did you go to Woodhouse 6th form then?

I know loads of people who went there too!

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 17:27

Yup know Mister F he is famous in his own pub the Tav that is. Not sure who AR is though.

When did you work there?

Yes might have gone to Woodhouse. Small world.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 17:37

Who doesn't know Mr F! Many a night cavorting in the Tav with him

I haven't seen him for yonks though I don't get out much any more. Babies n that you know how it is!

I worked there about 6 years ago so before your time. Wasn;t there long so the only people I know who worked there were people who I knew anyway IYSWIM. Barnet is a v small place!

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 17:57

I worked there 6 years ago and in fact my DS is a MEX baby as met my husband there! Anyways I think we have hijacked the thread!

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 23/02/2010 19:53

I DO NOT KNOW ALL THESE PEOPLE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT (ups sorry for caps) as only moved here a few years ago but have to agree on the "Barnet is a very small place"... Gosh it feels like I moved back home where evryone know everybody. Very scared of saying the wrong thing to someone and coming to bite me back.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 20:17

Blimey loujalou. I know stacks of people who worked there - wonder if i know you! I also know someone who married someone else from there... BUT they haven't got a baby so guessing it's not you!

All too spooky...

No-one will bite you pippi barnet people are lovely! I wonder if you are my next door neighbour

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 23/02/2010 20:45

I hope not because if you are you hate me!

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 20:47

No not you then!

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 23/02/2010 20:53

Thank heaven. You sound like a lovely neighbour to have.

And yes Barnet is lovely. With a family is perfect, made loads of great friends. I must admit I also do like the fact that it is well connected and I can escape the villagey feel if/when I want to.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 21:53

Yes I agree that's the beauty of it round here - you can do the local vilagey thing, or do anonymous, depending on your mood!

Loujalou · 24/02/2010 10:12

There were lots of people who got married from MEX. Figured who AR was. I didn't work in New Business though....
