Where to live in London?

msrisotto · 22/02/2010 17:06

We don't particularly want to move but OH's job is taking him/us to London, he really doesn't want to live in London but I don't mind.

I'd prefer to live nearer north London as it's closer to my family, I have visited people in north London and know I like Brent cross shopping centre but that is really the extent of my knowledge!
Alternatively, somewhere about 1 hours commute to Euston kind of area?
Any ideas? Our budget would be around 4 - 450.

We're in Enfield which is not too far from Barnet and has a similar kind of villagey feel -- there is a good community feel to it, plenty of green space and lots of families. You would easily get a 3 or 4 bed with off street parking for your budget.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:31

Oooh hello meg

There's an ikea near meg

sparechange · 23/02/2010 10:31

We have friends in Hertford, and they love it
2 stations, so a choice of routes into London, with the quickest train only taking 25mins, and running late into the night (in case you want some late-ish nights in London...)
Small town feel, lots of independent shops and restaurants, lots of open space and great schools

And your money would buy you something very nice

MegBusset · 23/02/2010 10:31

I have been daydreaming about taking on this renovation job...

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:37

Hertford v nice. Also I like ware.

They are quite a long way out though.

If you were thinking along those lines I always think welwyn garden city is nice. Has a john lewis so for a brent x lover might be appropriate.

Plus you get a lot more for your money there.

Let's have a look! (Love looking at houses

Ohhh meg v nice

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:39

oooooh you don't get the whole thing and it's a bit far from stuff but gosh

msrisotto · 23/02/2010 10:45

Nice one ladies!

lets try that link again

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:51

handy for the station hertford

Kewcumber · 23/02/2010 10:51

Pshaw to everybody - Kew of course! Where else is there?

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:54

blimey luxury penthouse apartment with gym near hertford east station. Not keen on the outside of it myself but still blimey. This must be the posh bit of hertford (I know it's nice in general but don't know it that well IYWSIM)

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 10:55

Kew is v pricey though isn't it?

Agree lovely though.

msrisotto · 23/02/2010 11:02

I'm so not telling - the link for handy for the station hertford hasn't worked
The first one is bloody amazing!

I remember walking through kew when going to the gardens once, it is lovely but surely too expensive.

Harpenden is lush and there are cheaper bits. I have lived in Enfield and Barnet and think Enfield is better shops. Barnet is a bit of a ghost town and not much life to it. Liked living there though as was close to station and could get into London. Was young and childless then. Harpenden is full of families but good-ish train links to London. Prefer it to St Albans.

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:04

try again

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:04

Enfield is better for shops - even.

Kewcumber · 23/02/2010 11:05

expensive? Pah! Who needs lots of bedrooms when you can live in Kew?

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:07

welwyn opposite john lewis and v v nice...

ImSoNotTelling · 23/02/2010 11:08

That glare is semi jokey BTW!

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:08

Depending what you want there are lots nice villages around Harpenden / St Albans. But I too would keep away from the dullness that is Potters Bar.

Kewcumber · 23/02/2010 11:10

right in the middle of Kew village they'd probably take an offer.

Sorted.

msrisotto · 23/02/2010 11:10

Ooh I'msonottelling - Glad you reposted that, I have emailed that (and a loads others!) to him, it looks v good.

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:12

Sorry but it is dull. Welwyn is nice though - though also a bit dull. If I didn't have any kids and wasn't planning any for sometime then I would probably choose St Albans or North London.

Loujalou · 23/02/2010 11:14

Those flats do look nice - I might have seen them when browsing John Lewis. No pubs in WGC really as it was started by a Quaker. There are more pubs in my village than the whole of WGC. Welwyn Old Town is nice and full of pubs / restaurants. Would like to live there.
