So, STOCKPORT, huh? Do you live there, and what do you think of it?

Following on from my appeal for help for a move to Manchester, I am casting my net a little wider and appealing again to helpful and wise MNers.

I think we have narrowed down to two areas, Trafford and Stockport and after a lot of great advice on her for Manchester, I'd like some opinions on Stockport.

Seems a bit more green, still good schools.

Is it too country? I'm born and bred in the city and am an urban fox (see what I did there? ), although a breath of fresh air appeals.

Four under seven, a DH who works away alot, but will be based in Salford. I have done lots of research on the internet and have been there a couple of times, but only really driven through. On paper it looks pretty good. Is it?

Thanks for your time

I honestly don't understand why everyone spoke so highly of Timperley, Altrinham and Sale. In fact, I have just spent over 6 months looking for houses around the area as I was told that there are some very good schools and commuting is easy i.e. tram/train.

I am afraid, my experience is pretty negative so far. The city centre round the area is very caustrophobic and congested. On many occasions, my husband and I stucked in the traffic for ages! Worst of all, the built of many of the property there is so not worth the asking price. I'd much rather looking at nice area in Stockport etc.

I think this is a really old thread Dottie2. The vast majority of people pay the asking prices in Timperley / Altrincham / Sale simply to be within Trafford when it comes to school catchments. I think Altrincham was recently voted by the Sunday Times as the best place in the country to live as far as schooling is concerned. The state grammar schools compete very favourably with the best schools in the country (including independents) and I think most of the primary schools in the area are outstanding according to OFSTED. It may be more congested than Stockport but there's no comparison from an education point of view, hence the prices.

Yes, I know that and that is indeed the reason why we try to move in here in the first place. However, after looking around for months, I have decided that this is definitely not the place for us.This place is so congested, houses are so overpriced and poorly built. Environment is just so so much worse than many nearby areas. I am so glad that all my kids go to gifted schools, and thus we are not restricted by school catchment areas.
