So, STOCKPORT, huh? Do you live there, and what do you think of it?

Following on from my appeal for help for a move to Manchester, I am casting my net a little wider and appealing again to helpful and wise MNers.

I think we have narrowed down to two areas, Trafford and Stockport and after a lot of great advice on her for Manchester, I'd like some opinions on Stockport.

Seems a bit more green, still good schools.

Is it too country? I'm born and bred in the city and am an urban fox (see what I did there? ), although a breath of fresh air appeals.

Four under seven, a DH who works away alot, but will be based in Salford. I have done lots of research on the internet and have been there a couple of times, but only really driven through. On paper it looks pretty good. Is it?

Thanks for your time

Owl, my children go to SGS (juniors at the moment!)

Martha, I lived on Cherry Holt Ave and went to St Winnies primary school. I am 42 though, and left there to go to Timperley when I was 15.

See if any of that rings bells with him.

OldDoe · 14/08/2009 23:21

and if you're still 37 (as per your profile) then you're two years younger than my DH so must have been at HGH at the same time [wow - small world]

Well, update please, do you know the same people? Has this thread gone all 'Surprise Surprise' and does that make me Cilla Black?!
And if anyone else wants to give their opinions on Stockport/Trafford, they'd be very welcome.
Today I have filed my research and am going to apply myself to a spreadsheet to aid comparison.
I either have too much time on my hands, or should get a job

Old doe - I'm afraid you are a few years older wiser than my DH .

OldDoe · 15/08/2009 22:34

Martha - from being the baby in every group I was part of, I seem to have become the auld fart over night! I'm shit at getting old too!

Chevre, you hated Wilmslow? Gawd, you must have had one really crap job and been billeted in the one and only horrid area of Wilmslow then! I feel bad you had such a crap time oooop north.

Stockport Centre a bit rough surely?? Surrounding areas Bramhall, Didsbury etc lovely but the centre I used to teach at Stockport School (mile end lane not grammer) it is good, above average but not sure I'd send mine there, Hazel Grove High similar. However, Priestnall a very good school and Marple Hall very good but definately more rural than Urban. I have to agree that Trafford and the Grammer schools are very well regarded in the area and held in high esteem!

ahola · 16/08/2009 15:49

"Stockport... so good they named it once"

HarrietToo · 16/08/2009 19:03

Yeah, what other town has a radio sitcom set there?

Heaton Moor, Didsbury, Bramhall, Marple - all very nice. Heaton Moor and Didsbury more urban, Marple more rural, Bramhall has Bramhall Hall.

If you pick Heaton Moor, you get to send the kids to Priestnall.

Now this is a bizarre piece of information for you from my dad - apparently, Heaton Moor has a noticeably greater percentage of ethnic minority families than much of the rest of Stockport, and this appears to be related to families from cultures with a traditionally extremely strong value for education moving to Heaton Moor in order for their children to go to Priestnall, with the result that Priestnall is getting more and more hard working students with more and more supportive families, and the standards continue to rise...
