Would you challenge a landlord replacing Miele with a cheaper dishwasher?

We rent a pretty expensive flat in London. The yield is very low and the landlord struggles to break even. That said, the flat has appreciated over the £1m in the 25 years the landlord has owned it.

The flat is a little bit dated but the rental price is commensurate. The kitchen would have been pretty high spec when it was put in around 2012. This includes a (not built in) dishwasher, fridge, oven, washing machine etc all from Miele.

The dishwasher broke and the landlord joked to me how expensive Miele ones were. So I joked back that the Miele appliances were why we rented this place (partly true).

Landlord fits new dishwasher and it’s a £250 one from China. I was expecting a Miele one or something of similarly high quality. Would you argue about this? DP thinks I’m precious.

Is Miele some sort of posh desirable brand? Doesn't mean anything to me.

You are being very precious!

It's a brand for snobby wankers 😂😂😂

They are not pretty much the same. Otherwise the more expensive brands would be out of business.

There not better they rely on people like you that want a logo 😂😂😂 as others have already said half the dishwasher comes from China no matter the fancy brand

I had a Miele dishwasher and it was crap. Replaced it with a cheaper one and it was much better.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/09/2026 04:54

I’m a landlord. Just no.

SquirrelGG · 17/09/2026 05:06

The flat belongs to the landlord, he can replace the dishwasher with whatever brand he wants. And yes, I am a renter (without a dishwasher, but I don't want one).

Hi op. Yes they are being unreasonable. If you claim this as an expense on your taxes, the replacement has to be like for like.

I own two flats and a house and always replace like for like, plus I always ask the tenants if they have a preference eg. Size of washing drum/speed of spin.

All three properties have had things go wrong this year!

TheVeryAngryBanana · 17/09/2026 06:09

I don't think you're being unreasonably, because presumably you're paying extra for it being a luxury rental. However, I don't think you'll get anywhere and I doubt you're going to nice over a dishwasher.

Honestly I decided to pay more for a decent dishwasher recently and got a Bosch, so ok not a Miele but still meant to be better. And it doesn’t get stuff clean very well. My cheaper Hotpoint was much better.

i do think you’re being precious. As long as it works then the brand doesn’t matter.

Yeah I’m not impressed with our new Bosch either. Our old Beko was better.

But that legislation is to limit tax deductions to repairs and maintenance so as to prevent people from expensing property upgrades- e.g there was a crappy panel fence and it fell down and broke, and instead of replacing it like for like for 500 quid you replaced it with a stone wall that cost 3000 and improves the property.

The IR is not going to care about you replacing with something cheaper and expensing the cheaper item.

Oh. I'm such a stickler for rules! 😳

mondaytosunday · 17/09/2026 10:02

Omg you cannot dictate what brand the landlord supplies! If it works then it’s fine. Get over yourself (and Miele/Neff suck I’d take Beko over either any day).

Buy cheap, buy twice!

I have a Bosch that’s a very good age now.

We bought a cheap dishwasher from Ikea when we redid our kitchen, we replaced it last year after 13 years of faultless service.
