How long did it take you to get organised after house move?

We've been in over a week now and there's still loads of stuff to sort/find space for.

We've already got rid of lots. We had a shed before and a loft room with lots of cupboards. This loft is full of deep insulation that isn't suitable for boarding. We'd only end up keeping decorating stuff and camping gear in there to be honest. We have a storage room and getting a shed so that'll help.

I just feel a bit overwhelmed atm.

I moved 8 months ago.
still got some boxes in the garage.
First week after I moved the kitchen was full of boxes, I found it a bit overwhelming tbh.
Had a couple of friends over who helped a bit but it wasn’t until my daughter came round rolled up her sleeves and said, right mum were going to get all your kitchen stuff unpacked!
It took us a whole day to fill the kitchen cupboards.
I was really grateful for her help.
Still sorting stuff though eg sideboard cupboards I’ve just shoved stuff in. Hard to find the time when you’re working.
The school holiday is looming so I’m hoping I’ll finish off finally unpacking and sorting.
It takes a while.If you get help from someone close to you who you are happy to go through all your stuff it helps massively.

Our last move was UK to France and we were all boxes unpacked in 2 days, apart from the box of tools, the box of IT wires and a box of files.

But we did get rid of loads of stuff before we left the UK. So had to buy 1 new bed, I new dining room table, and an outside seating arrangement. And some curtains.

I moved in over six months ago and I'm still not fully in. When we first moved in, it was a case of stuff things somewhere, anywhere just so we had room.

As someone who typically has a "everything in it's place" sort of mentality, it's been a nightmare since I've yet to learn/remember where those places are exactly. In our old flat, the extension cable was in the kitchen cupboard, opposite the sink, under the microwave. In this house, it's here, somewhere.

I moved two years ago, still waiting!

It took me a lot more than a week.

very few people get things sorted very quickly.

18 months and counting :')

Moved last January with a 1 year old, three days to completely unpack everything and find a place for everything but that was three days non stop and my mum had DD for the three days so I was adamant it would be done before she was home or I wouldn’t have got anything done

How long is a piece of string? The more stuff you have the longer it will take. The less time you can devote to it the longer it will take. The less storage cupboards you have the longer it will take.

If you have fewer storage cupboards, loads of stuff, and only an hour a week it could take you a year. No stuff, multiple cupboards and six hours a day then it could only take you a few days.

Mine is the former and due to unforseen circumstances I'm looking to move again so I'm actually grateful half my stuff is still in boxes 😂

Ive still got boxes and bags in the loft that haven't been looked at since I moved 4 years ago! Moved in then had DC3 2 weeks later so never really got round to them

We didnt feel settled til we bought new furniture, which was about 6 months in

When we moved in we didn't fully unpack as we were painting and carpeting. It was a long time ago, but I think it was several months before we fully unpacked!

Months, but then we had various issues with roof leaks and had to pack up a whole room. This type of situation with house issues has kept occurring over the past decade so that we are still not fully installed! 😅

I’m a former RAF brat so have lots of experience moving house. I’m usually in and completely unpacked within 48 hours except one particularly memorable move where we all had norovirus! I came down with it two days before we completed, ex-DH the morning of the move then DS came home from school to the new house and promptly vomited all over the kitchen floor.

To make matters worse, our lovely former neighbour helped us move and we gave it to him where it spread through his family as well.

5 years here - stuff still needing sorting!

Another eighteen months here!

Every house we've bought (eight) has been a project so we've never had the luxury of unpacking everything immediately. We lived here a few months before deciding how to reconfigure the layout and ripping out the 50+ year old kitchen/removing walls, so just unpacked the bare essentials.

This one is the smallest we've owned too, with the least storage (except an integral garage we are part way through converting), so we needed to address that before we could start to decant stuff from boxes.

We're behind schedule and think it'll be another year plus before we can unpack the remaining few boxes.

Bit of an odd question. It's like apples and pears. It took me 2 years to get organised but that's because I had to do a complete renovation once I'd moved in, I also got the loft boarded and had a carpenter fit shelving and cupboards in various places. I couldn't move anything into it's proper place until the flooring was in which could only be done after electrics, plumbing, decorating etc was sorted.

We moved last summer and there’s still boxes to be unpacked. Some of that is because this house is just very different in style to our old house, so some pictures and mirrors still haven’t been put up because they’re not quite the right shape/size/colour.Some are still boxed because they don’t have a logical home. Though it’s getting to the point where maybe I decide we just don’t need some stuff and it can be donated or recycled.

I have moved a few times but first time was in with dh1 he had a house. Then when I left we shared care so stuff was in both houses.

When I moved again I didn't have lots of camping gear etc and enough kitchen space.
I met dh2 and got rid of a lot of furniture etc and moved with him. His tools etc take up a lot of space so when we get a big shed that'll help. We don't have a garage which I'm actually pleased about. Most people I know just shove stuff in them.
Dcs are grown now and only one has clothes here. They visited at the weekend and I said the clothes need to be sorted as there's so many. So many T shirts!

I'm glad we're not the only ones who don't have it done quickly.

I'm off work a few days so I'll be getting stuck in.

About six months but we needed to get the loft boarded so we had stuff in the shed that should be in the loft and stuff in the house that should be in the shed. We still feel a bit cluttered but since the loft was done it’s got better. DH is a musician so lots of his stuff and I have a drum kit currently in the loft so still plans to sort that out.

I think it takes a while. We are a year in and I would say we got the house functioning in a few weeks but it took a few months to find a home for everything. Our new house was bigger but furniture went in different rooms, some rooms had fitted furniture etc so it wasn't quite as simple as putting it all back in the room it came from.

Depends how long you are planning to stay where you are. If I move to stay for a year or 2, I am done in 2 weeks max.

If there's no real plan to move anytime soon, I take a week or 2 to make it liveable and organised for the first 6 months, but I prefer to spend at least a few weeks to have an idea of what really needs to be done.

I feel like you need to spend a bit of time in a house to see what really works for you, before going full on renovation and structure.

About 3 days. We downsized but still had to get rid of loads when we moved in. No garage. Just the 2 of us though.

First two houses about a year each. Third house all sorted by day 2.
First two houses need a lot of work so we didn't intend to unpack unless something was needed. We piled all the boxes in one room and went from there.
Third house we had help packing and unpacking from family and the house was in a move in and unbox situation. The help packing made a bigger difference than the unpacking to be honest as it meant I had the time to work out and decide which room would be best for each box. On moving day the removal men could easily see which room it needed to be in and out family helping unpack knew things were in the right room. The removal men also had door a tour of our old house which helped and told us that they could move our bedroom furniture with clothes in situ which helped reduce the packing and unpacking!

I couldn't stand anyone but dh and possibly adult dcs helping. Friends have offered. I'll rope them in to decorating.

I wonder how minimalist people manage? I find them fascinating.

We’ve been here over 18 months now and pictures, mirrors, shelves and a clock all need putting up. I suspect that they’ll still need putting up by Christmas at this rate.
