Do you like these Windows or not?

First floor extension of a modest 60s semi.

Do you like them or would they look silly? Should we just go for a regular rectangular window?

I really don't. But the whole thing is not my style. I prefer older properties, but also they look like they will make the room/space too dark.

I'd rather have bigger windows than long thin ones.

SwedishEdith · 05/07/2026 19:35

I like them inside. I think, because of the bed placing, more regular shaped windows would look odd as well. I'd go for it despite being a little on the fence about the external view.

ThinAir7 · 05/07/2026 19:36

I like it. Looks good inside too.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 05/07/2026 19:37

I like them inside. It’s unbalanced outside. Does the lower window need to be that shape?

becsmeister · 05/07/2026 19:38

Yes, I like the internal arrangement but worried it would look silly on a modest house. Also it looks a bit like a face.

I do like 70s, art deco and Japanese design but I realise this is not grand designs but a modest extension.

Quick thought, are you good at closing curtains, getting dressed? They are quite revealing, next to the bed. I don’t follow a strict routine and wander about while I get undressed. I’d unintentionally flash!

Lacharcuterie · 05/07/2026 19:38

Can you put the bed on the opposite wall and put in a Juliet balcony? We did that on one house and it was amazing. Lovely wildlife, good view and aeration and plenty of light. Planning to do it again to the next house once we have a bit saved up. Otherwise it is fine - outside and inside.

Lonelycrab · 05/07/2026 19:39

Tbh I think this sort of thing looks good on the back of a house but not the front, although they do look good from inside.

No, but it will be over a kitchen counter so a bit limited in the height it will be at.

Also the vertical windows could be made longer or shorter, wider too.

Ah ok sorry, yeah looks good thenSmile

Mycatmax · 05/07/2026 19:42

No.

Thatpastalife · 05/07/2026 19:43

Taste is subjective, but in my opinion, they are not attractive. I don’t like the outside at all, I think they look squinty? However, I’m guessing its your house and if its a long term home, do it to your taste.

SwedishEdith · 05/07/2026 19:43

Oh, if it's the back, I wouldn't worry.

CombatBarbie · 05/07/2026 19:44

I had these in germany but wider. I liked them....let loads of light in!

viques · 05/07/2026 19:45

They look ok from the inside but really look awful on the outside, look unbalanced and don’t suit the style of house. You could probably get away with them in a quirky arts and crafts style house, or a very modern house with strong vertical lines, but not a modern red brick extension.

AlreadyBetty · 05/07/2026 19:45

I would worry they would look daft inside with curtains or blinds. Will they be easy but to clean?

Notsodisney · 05/07/2026 19:46

I quite like that the house looks surprised😂

Badvocthebad · 05/07/2026 19:47

I like them

crikeymikey123 · 05/07/2026 19:51

If it's your forever home, do it if you like it.
If it's not, I think it'll lower the house value. I'd go with traditional proportions/ratios if I was you.

Yeah forever home, but lowering house value is quite a powerful reason not to all the same

I like them but make them a little wider

DramaAlpaca · 05/07/2026 20:01

I was going to say no, I'm not keen and all I can see is a surprised looking face. But now I've seen they're at the back of the property, they're fine.

GasPanic · 05/07/2026 20:08

They are the kind of thing that people either like or dislike, so potentially lower the amount of people that would find the house acceptable.

My guess is blinds for them would be pretty pricey, and if they are south facing you would probably want blinds as they make the amount of window area quite large and that would heat the room up a lot. The opposite in winter. Not sure what the mechanism for opening/closing the blinds would be. To open them all the way up you would have to haul the blind up many feet.

The glass itself is probably non standard and quite expensive to replace.

GasPanic · 05/07/2026 20:10

Oh and do the windows actually open ? Maybe this is necessary for regs ? IDK.

Opening them could be difficult due to the weight.
