Do you like these Windows or not?

First floor extension of a modest 60s semi.

Do you like them or would they look silly? Should we just go for a regular rectangular window?

I quite like the effect from inside, but the exterior looks quite comical and poorly designed.

Also, the interior and exterior placements are quite off in the images. The windows shown in your external image would be pretty much butted up against the corners of the room inside, with no room for curtains and definitely no fitted wardrobes.

Can you re-do your mock-ups with accurate window placements? and perhaps show us a floor plan too?

TheyGrewUp · 05/07/2026 22:21

Fine at the back. I think something sculptured needs to be put on the outside wall between them. If possible, make them a bit wider.

becsmeister · 05/07/2026 22:24

@Scampuss floorplan attached

It's initial stages so this window idea hasn't come from architect. It's me playing around with ideas. It's North West facing fwiw

On attachment the bathroom will be by the stairs. (not the alternative position).

The door to the new bedroom will be moved so it's not ensuite but a second family Bathroom.

its a hard NO from me. From the inside it looks ok, but from the outside it's totally disproportionate, not aesthetic and honestly very odd. You'll regret the lack of light and the limited furniture arrangements this creates as well.

OotontheRandan · 05/07/2026 23:18

Nope.

From the floor plan, the bed in red will be too close to the en suite door. Leave the bed where it is shown on the plan.

The downstairs window is too narrow for the size of the wall. I would have upstairs and downstairs windows the same proportion otherwise the rear wall as you have shown will look awkward and unbalanced.

Viviennemary · 05/07/2026 23:22

They look awful. Can't see that they would appeal to many people.

NewOnMumsN3t · 05/07/2026 23:54

Looks good on the inside, outside not so much. I'd say make them a bit wider and just short enough to accommodate a night stand below each window

UniDaysAcoming · 06/07/2026 06:29

As it's the back of the house put a Juliet balcony in (the ones with large french windows and a railing outside). You can just pull the bed a foot or two away from it.

LadyChilli · 06/07/2026 06:32

I really like them. Just be aware that it might restrict your ability to rearrange the bedroom furniture as it really does need the bed to be where it is to work.

Twoweeksinaugust · 06/07/2026 06:48

Sorry I really don't, it's not inkeeping with the rest of the house, but mostly it's the face!

Notsodisney · 06/07/2026 07:38

Is that master? If yes I expect space for minimum king size bed. I eould never buy house where master can't take king size. Does this fit minimum 150cm wide bed fine? It mentions the bed size but not room size

yes, could take a king size bed - it's about 3.4 meters wide. As for whether it's the master it's unclear. It will be a 3 double bedroom house (with room for king size beds).

Thanks all, we decided to play it safe and ditch the vertical windows idea. As this thread illustrates, a lot of people wouldn't like it which would probably affect value when we eventually sell (no plans but you never know). Also, I may not be able to unsee the face😄

You could have gone for a half moon kitchen window and at least it would always be smiling at you! @becsmeister I think the mish mash of windows would eventually annoy you when trying to enjoy your garden so a good decision.

Chewbecca · 06/07/2026 12:57

I would miss not having fanlight windows to leave open. I know they are unfashionable currently though!

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 06/07/2026 14:55

The shape is fine and far better than standard boring windows. They take the house into a more modern feel. Architect too so I’m not surprised at the suggestion 😁

The framing is just too thick

yonem · 06/07/2026 15:01

I would just have one central window and have the bed against the other wall. It’s not good feng shui to have a window behind the bed.

Nitgel · 06/07/2026 15:03

Looks.like windows.in a secure unit

AnonSugar · 06/07/2026 15:05

I like the inside but the house looks like a pig on the outside 😆

becsmeister · 09/07/2026 16:32

Sorry to reincarnated this thread, I've been playing around and revisiting this. See attached image. The windows downstairs are more or less what we would have. Does this look better?

It looks slightly better but I think the bedroom will be really dark and it will be depressing not to be able to see a window from the bed.

Weeellokthen · 09/07/2026 16:41

No no no. Bigger=better when it comes to windows. Let there be light and lots of it 😀

Whyohwhy1973 · 09/07/2026 16:48

No, it still looks daft. Sorry.

If you make sure the mullion on the ground floor window line up with the frame of the upstairs one
right hand side of photo)
Then yes

If they end up a little off it will look like a right cock up

Of note
Why do the upstairs windows show a frame and an opening frame
If they are not opening lights only one frame is needed

neilyoungismyhero · 09/07/2026 17:25

I really like them especially the interior view. It does look a bit face like but I like quirky and it is the rear view.
